Just letting off steam but if I never saw Hanley take another swing in a Sox uniform, I would be just fine.
Well that was a few hours that we won't ever get back. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZz

The Yanks are all but handing 1st place over to the Red Sox and they can't even get out of their own way. That offense is so thoroughly mediocre and easy to shut down. You don't have to be Cy Young to shut down the offense.

“ evandrellich: The Red Sox came into today with a .420 slugging percentage in June, the third lowest mark in the majors.

surprised we lost 2 of 3. gotta hope that the offense find some consistency, and maintain the overall pitching. Frustrated, but still in 1st.
I think also there may need to be a realization that the parity in baseball is as good as it may have ever been. Sure there are a few that are running away with it, but the Indians, Cubs and other good teams are in dogfights also. It may just be that kind of season.

We're keeping pace with the Yankees.

Hanley - .241 - 10-29...only 7 doubles, no triples.
In contrast - Vazquez has 10 doubles in 100 less ABs, Young has 8 doubles in 100 less ABs
With no offense coming from 3B, we can't afford a non-productive DH.
Rest him or DL him...or release/trade.

It always amazes me when someone who has the hand-eye coordination to play defense the way Deven Marrero does has so much trouble just making contact. I can get the Jose Iglesias types, who have low strike out rates but just don't drive the ball with enough authority. But it's just crazy to me that someone can see a batted ball as well as Marrero can, but not a pitched ball. And it's not just pitch identification either - he struggles more with fastballs than other pitches.

Maybe, but I'm always hesitant to write off something as mental just because we can't figure out the physical/mechanical. For one thing, his swing mechanics are dreadful, but that doesn't mean they're correctable. Usually we don't see players with swing mechanics as bad as Marrero in the majors, because we almost never see players as good defensively as he is. People with a better scouting eye than I have tell me that he's selling out contact for power, but he's been doing it for so long that maybe that's just his natural swing.

Pitch recognition aside, he looks long to the ball to me. He is wasting a tremendous opportunity with this much MLB playing time as a .300 OBP would likely get him a 25 man ultility spot somewhere. If he had a clue he''d use a bat that was 2-4 ounces lighter, which would at least give him a bit more bat speed. A better correction would be to combine the lighter bat with a shorter path to the ball, but the latter takes a lot more work and a completely different set-up. Even if he adapted a Charlie Lau-style "slap hitter" stance where the bat is flattened, closer to the strike zone (ie not cranked back) and there is no traditional load, just forward swing along a shorter line/path he'd be better off. At least he'd have a better chance of contact then and have a decent statistical probability of finding some holes in the infield. Right now he doesn't even have the average/OBP of most starting NL pitchers.
