I enjoy the 3 time champion GCL Sox every year. I follow every game. Gotta make it back to Ft Myers again. Happy GCL opening day. Also excited to see how the draftees perform.

Guessing (hoping) it will be Velazquez on the mound for the PawSox. He's had six days rest, and it'd be Walden's turn in the rotation but he pitched last night. Only reason I can think of that it wouldn't be him is if the MLB club kept him close by in case of an injury.

The GCL Sox set their roster: www.milb.com/roster/index.jsp?cid=471Many of the top picks are missing (Scherff, Brannen, Schellenger, Esplin), as they probably will go through shoulder programs and what not.

Oddanier Mosqueda with the start for the GCL Red Sox. Nice, I was hoping he'd be a starter for the GCL squad this year. He had impressive numbers in the DSL last year and is one of the youngest on the GCL roster this year.

Ritzi Mendoza pitching as the closer in the GCL debut. Struggled as a reliever in DSL in 2015, then killed it as a starter last year (albeit as a 3rd year 20 year old in DSL). Interesting to see whether they continue to use him as a reliever this year.

I don't think this was the point you were trying to make, but I think it's good to point out that working the last inning and "pitching as the closer" are different things. The usage of Nogosek this year aside, the Red Sox almost never designate a "closer" below Triple-A. It's just not the best way to get young pitchers consistent work and/or looks in different situations. Nogosek is obviously the rare pitcher they view as a potentially good short reliever while still in the low minors.

Given his age, however, it wouldn't surprise me if they did use him as a closer though. He had great success in the DSL last year... in his fourth year in the league, and he didn't strike anyone out.
Being in your fifth year in the system and still being in a complex league speaks volumes.

Spinners have 18 errors through their first 7 games. And that's not counting the 4 they have already through about one inning tonight. Early season rust I hope.

Ball and Owens on the same team. Fun times. It feels like there's a rip in space time continuum allowing us to have 2 young Randy Johnsons.

Trevor Kelley quietly having a nice start to the season. The R.I. Native is sporting a 7 for 7 in SVO with an era at 1.56. Showing only 6BB in 28.2 IP. Good to see the local kid doing well.
