Now you want to throw strikes with a three run lead Barnes???!!! Man you're annoying. fwiw, if you weren't catching on NESN, Dave O'Brien brought up his severe Home (Superman) Road (< Clark Kent, if CK is "average"!) splits

I'm being somewhat facetious here, but I really hope the Doug Fisters and Tzu Wei Lins of the world teach the Red Sox a lesson about overpaying for the David Prices and Pablo Sandovals of the world.

Just did a quick peek at Sale's season - these are his losses
April 10 - 2-1 - 7.2 IP, 2 ER, 10 K April 27 - 3-0 - 8 IP, 2 ER, 10 K May 19 - 3-2 - 7 IP, 2 ER, 10 K (no decision) June 15 - 1-0 - 8 IP, 1 ER 10 K
other no decisions
April 5 - team won 3-0 - 7 IP 0 ER 7 K April 20 - team won 4-1 - 8 IP, 0 ER, 13 K May 19 - team lost 3-2 - 7 IP, 2 ER, 10 K
meaning Sale could very well have 7 more wins based on the quality of those starts.
Remarkable season underway!

Who was the last Red Sox free agent to live up exactly to expectations? No more, no less. (though with the past week, Moreland prob slightly outperforming expectations) The name that popped into my head, was one on a larger scale - curious how close you would rate the Red Sox FA deal w/ Manny, to that standard?...

JD Drew. Stephen Drew (the first time). Napoli (the first time). The Sox haven't been a total disaster at free agency, the Yankees have been just as bad.

So what are the Sox supposed to do? Make sure he doesn't ever go on a plane to travel with the team? I don't know why broadcasts emphasize such dumb points sometimes.

JD Drew was by no means as terrible as he's made out to be, but that first year was below expectations, given contract. Lackey another who had a rough start. Manny is a looonnggg time ago, and certainly exceeded all expectations.
Stephen Drew may be the answer? I'm just amazed that Moreland is exactly what you hoped/expected, and has been consistently so all year.

I thought the last two years is where JD Drew disappointed but that's what you should expect from free agents (especially ones in their 30's). Good production the first couple years and then a decline towards the end of the contract.

His age 34 season still generated 2.2 wins over 139 games, including 22 home runs. That just about made his contract terms. Not great but passable.

This team is very hard to figure out. Tonight against a guy with electric stuff, we put 4 runs on the board.
However the previous two games against mediocre hack pitchers we completely sucked at the plate, minus Moreland's two taters and one tater by Hanley.
I wish we had someone like beltre or Beltran to calm these hitters and focus them. Too many of our hitters are waiting for someone else to step it up and that is not going to happen. We need a club house leader.

No, Bradley hit a home run also.
You're wanting some sort of absolute predictability. That doesn't exist. Also the pop psychology never has appealed to me. You're welcome to throw that around, but I don't put much stock in it. I'd also disagree about the "hack pitchers". You don't know who Bridwell is anymore than I do. He just showed up in the majors. Maybe he was lucky, or maybe he throws a ball that's as heavy as it looked. The Angels shutout the Dodgers this evening at Chavez Ravine. They're pitching and playing well right now, and they were largely responsible for pulling the Yankees back to the pack. They must be doing something right.
It's not an easy game, so it's best not to sell any team short.

www.bostonherald.com/sports/red_sox/2017/06/red_sox_notebook_double_a_prospect_tzu_wei_lin_makes_start_at_third_base“Defense is a priority (at third base), Farrell said. “And keep in mind, Lin is coming here as a good solid defender. Recognize what Deven has done at third base, he’s stabilized it. But there are also situations offensively to come up in this spot to execute as the situation calls for. We’ve had a mixed bag with that.”
Farrell was likely alluding to Marrero in bunt situations."I said Farrell was pissed about Marrero's bunting. But he'll prob' get back in there facing LHP.

Isn't Chris Young dhing tonight? That's what 98.5 is reporting because Hanley is dealing with a sore right knee issue. Honestly, can we just DL Hanley already? This is getting old. Heal up and come back ready post-break. I've had about enough of the diva stuff. If you're hurt, DL it and get better. Agree. The more time on the DL, the fewer plate appearances which diminishes the chances of his option kicking in.

Is Sam Travis god-awful vs. RHP or is Farrell just being Farrell when it comes to using him (I was thinking DH last night and a few PH opportunities over the weekend)?

I've long been a fan of this. Fastballs up in the zone, and especially up n the zone and in, are very difficult for anyone not Mike Trout or Vladimir Guerrero in their primes to catch up with: www.hardballtimes.com/all-about-the-high-inside-fastball/On the flip side, the team's insistence on throwing fastballs at about a foot above the batter's eye-level in virtually every 0-2 count hasn't worked since about 1997 (although I would do it if I was facing Pablo Sandoval),

Is average fastball height really a good metric to use for this analysis? Wouldn't a count or % of fastballs over some threshold be a much better indicator of usage of the high FB? Maybe Red Sox pitchers are using less low fastballs or more outside/inside pitches of average height, it's not really clear from this data.

Off topic maybe but just read that Brian MacPherson is going to leave Projo and that makes the selfish me very sad: An awesome, smart and thoughtful writer who even commented here a few times. He'll be missed.
