Chavis 2-4, 2B, and a run scored. Played third. 2 game tally: 1 DH, 1 3B, 0 1B. I expect they’d bring on the 1B play slowly. Especially since he didn't get Instructs to work on it, as planned. (He was on the roster. I didn't tell you guys this.)

Chavis looking good at first, but that music is horrible.

He looks like a child over there. Eh, that seems mostly because of those nets to me, which skews the perspective. I think Chavis' height (or lack thereof) is a definite disadvantage, but not an insurmountable one.

Chavis one for two so far today. Chad DLG with a BH and Rbi.

Owens followed by McAvoy, Poyner, and Buttrey. Combined for 5 scoreless, 1 hit, 4 BB, 5 K.

I don't see Devers being moved off third any time soon, so Chavis (assuming he's not traded) would need to play somewhere else. With Ramirez probably best suited for DH at this point, first base is the most logical option. I'd doubt Chavis makes the big league team out of spring training, but grooming him for first base is a good move.

Also from Keith Law Chat today on his trip to AZ Fall League:
TestaDuda Did you get a look at Chavis? Is that swing set-up and execution really fixed? Still only 21 years old, I think. Keith Law 1:29 "Fixed" is too strong a word. His hand is healthy, which helped. And the contact he's making is hard. He can still get pretty uphill and he's not that disciplined a hitter.
I think he also called Owens' a "disaster."

How is it first base practice to have a man hit you grounders from 2b?

Practicing picking bad throws. When you're taking ground balls, you're not trying to hold the bag.

Practicing picking bad throws. When you're taking ground balls, you're not trying to hold the bag. Thanks. And I guess hitting balls is easier than throwing them, and no one wants to practice making bad throws.

The ground in front of him? Kind of weird to do with any velocity over that many reps.

Chavis starting at first today for Peioria. Goes two for five with a double and a walk. No errors for Chavis. CDLG 0-4 with a walk.

I think Chavis' height (or lack thereof) is a definite disadvantage, but not an insurmountable one. if you follow basketball at all, "height" is outdated...all about wingspan (for a 1b, "standing reach" is probably more appropriate). a 1b who is only 5'10 could conceivably cover as much ground as someone 6'2...of course, chavis is a stocky guy so i doubt he measures well in any case.

At the Javelinas vs Saguaros game in Surprise. The ST home of the Rangers and Royals. Fortunately a cloudy day in the desert. Owens was pretty much dealing through 4. Just replaced after giving a total of one run on four hits. Two hits by 1B which Moreland would surely have caught. Owens looked good.
Chavis still at 3B which isn't busy, but he made a couple of very loud outs so far. Tobias is DH and got a LD RBI single to LF as I arrived during top of 2nd after two of their 3 runs scored. And San Diego star Guerra looks good on both sides of the ball, smooth athlete, and would look good in a Sox uni, but another LHB UIF would be overkill. Back to the game. Runners on corners, no outs.

For those who haven't been following him, old friend Guerra just ended his second straight season of producing nothing at the plate. In a year and a half in the California League, he had a .606 OPS, which is like a .500 OPS elsewhere (although Lake Elsinore is one of the more pitcher-friendly CAL League parks). He then put up a .588 OPS in Double-A over 39 games. Abundantly clear Dombrowski sold high on him, at least. 59 pitches, 35 strikes for Owens. Not a bad little outing considering his first start.

Gotta love irony. Today's game (top of 9th) wasn't particularly exciting despite 15H and 6R for Peoria so far. Three things stood out, though: 1. Owens strong 1R outing. Better D would have given him 0R. 2. Javier Guerra's offense, in his cool silver shoes, two hits that I know of, (LD and GB through the right side), but he was hot and could have done more before I got there. Also.alert and speedy base running and a nice DP. 3. The radar gun consistently read mid to high 90's. Times are changing. 4. Make that four items. Bottom o 9th rally by Saguaros. HR, couple of hits. Now 6-4 with two outs.

Game over. 6-4 Peoria. Quite a few Sox hats. Tomorrow will be at Peoria park facing the visiting Scottsdale Scorpions (NYFY, Angels, 3 NL teams). Hope to have more info for you. Finding the park now so I can be early and get a scorecard of sorts, as Siri and I spent a half hour finding Surprise park today, following s 320 mile early morning drive from soCal. Weather is nice, my car says 99 degrees.

In Peoria. Field being made ready. Only CDLG playing for the Sox today, at 3B. However get to see the Braves Ronald Acuna again, as well as Javier Guerra at SS. And Jared James again, who isn't even in the scouting package. Such is AFL, as when McAvoy replaced BJ.
Interestingly, Scottsdale playing 4 NYM and 4 NYFY, Troy Montgomery of Angels in CF, and Cinci's Wendolyn Bautista pitching. The top NYFY prospects today are SS Thairo Estrada ranked #18 by MLB. CF Estevan Florial is #78. David Thompson is #26
Finally, Peoria is the ST home of Mariners and Padres, a huge complex, and the first joint ST facility in Az, maybe baseball
