Barnes, Workman, Reed last night demonstrated just how good this Pen, already highly rated, is becoming.
And in that context JF properly used loogy Abad and roogy Hembree in a powerful, + ephus pitch, platoon. That was an awesome, well managed inning.
IMO Reed instantly improves an already formidable Pen that, with the returns of Smith and Kelly, could become elite; buttressed by very strong, MLB-experienced depth in AAA.
Reed looked good, helped the Pen look good, and became part of a pennant run, in the same way adding Devers and Nunez instantly helped the offense look good. A pretty successful week of getting this team back to fulfilling its pre-season promise.

Looking this up as I type.
wOBA allowed to RHB.
.142 Kimbrel .163 Barnes since he changed his delivery .171 Kelly .193 Workman this time around .288 Reed .311 Abad .315 Hembree .319 Boyer
Vs LHB
.180 Barnes, ditto .223 Abad .268 Kimbrel .276 Reed .307 Workman, ditto (but .239 since July 26) .360 Kelly .380 Boyer .392 Hembree
Barnes' sample here is 18 outings and 77 BFP, while Workman's is 11 G and 50 BFP (or 7 and 28 for the most recent, dominant stretch). So it's hard to say that Reed is just their 4th best reliever. But it's certainly a possibility.

Shouldn't be surprisd, but am, that Abad is the loogy we thought he was before he pitched against so many RHB last year. Unless There is a better MiLB alternative he will be necessary in post season. If Reed is behind Kimbrel, Barnes, Workman or Kelly, and if Smith is truly ready by September, that would make 7. Otherwise, the choice for the 7th/8th slot would be among a starting pitcher or Hembree or Boyer or a red hot MilB player. Barring more injuries. Choices.

Reminder: two-thirds of a season of wOBA allowed by a reliever versus LHB/RHB is not close to a large enough sample to be predictive, especially if you're looking at Workman or a subset of Barnes' season.

They absolutely do need to be regressed to the mean. But the extent to which you do that is based on the observable stuff, not any numbers. This ain't being done with the proverbial smoke and mirrors. It's smoke and curveballs. Barnes and Workman have looked tremendous. Regressing them reasonably, and adding an ordinary level of inconsistency (none of which we've yet observed) leaves them as very possible candidates to be better than Reed going forward. It is true that we don't know if either is prone to getting way out of whack for significant stretches, more so than is typical.

What's up with this guy? He was pissed at getting yanked last night, but he has been underwhelming so far. Pretty sick of relievers that we trade for that can't pitch well (or at all for that matter). Is there reason for concern?

Pretty sick of relievers that we trade for that can't pitch well (or at all for that matter). Is there reason for concern? We're still in really tiny sample size territory. Plenty of players have a period of adjustment after a trade. Farrell should lower his leverage for awhile until he's back on track. Workman should be in his place.
