Nice. So has he been shut down for injury or just in a throwing program to build strength because he threw a lot in HS season?

No inside info, but I'd guess throwing program. The Red Sox generally have their draftees take a couple weeks between signing and their debuts to get them started on the shoulder strengthening program and to generally get settled in to pro ball (see Houck's gap between signing and debut, for instance).

Yeah they put draftees on the shoulder program after they draft them to build strength before letting them begin a throwing progression.
He'll get his feet wet in the GCL at some point, go to the Fall Instructional League, and then come into camp next year competing for a spot in Greenville. The number of GCL innings he throws won't really affect that.

They're saying Greenville is a legit option for him to start the year. And Scherff says his goal is to get to Salem. Ambitious. I like it. The organization will be a close on him and his health, I'm sure.
Here's a real breakout candidate, too. If Scherff can really emerge as a top pitching prospect, that will go a long way towards improving the Sox system. (Houck, too).

Guys like Scherff, Groome, Mata and Houck are why I think people are overreacting to the level of talent in the system. A year from now they could all be top 100 prospects.
The 2017 draft class was epic and Scherff was a big reason why. Perfect mix of lower risk College players and higher upside high school players. You have to love the group of High School players in Brannen, Scherff, Esplin, Colon, Hanna, Perry, and Dearden just to name the better ones.

He's 6-foot-3 and has one potentially plus pitch at the moment (fastball) and an above-average changeup, with work to do on his curve and maybe slider. It's great that Scherff has set a goal for himself to get to Salem, but I don't think that's very realistic unless he absolutely shoves. He's honestly fighting to even start the year in Greenville, and what I could see is him spending a month in XST, then moving up to Greenville coinciding with early promotions for say a Groome, Houck, and/or Thompson. |

Agree with this. I doubt we'll see Scherff in Salem this year, just liked that he has his sights on getting there. Pitch counts are also something that will need to be watched. Not only this year, but each year as he progresses. If he moves too quickly, he might be limited innings-wise. That would be a good problem to have, but it's unlikely it get to that. |

Oh, I completely agree. That was meant facetiously, in reference to his bold goal and to Whitley’s arrival in AA in his first full season. For Scherff, that’s probably a 98th %ile outcome. |

While I personally think Groome is more likely to be a workhorse, 3rd-4th starter, Pomeranz type pitcher and Houck a Barnes-type reliever (which is fine by me), I really like the Scherff pick and am quite high on Mata, especially if he adds even a MPH or two to his fastball. |

Groome actually has the Pomeranz-at-draft-time starter kit (FB sits a little higher, similarly outstanding CB), and a raw but developing change. But I think you’re underselling Pomeranz. He’s not the most efficient guy, but he’s been solidly “2a” or “2/3” starter for the last two years, averaging 3.0 fWAR. Maybe Groome should add a cutter, too. |

Scherff may have struck out two of the first three hitters he faced today, but he also threw several by his catcher during his warm up throws and had several hit out in front of the plate. Might not mean anything, but I am betting he is going to have a problem consistently getting the right release point.

Seems like he repeats really well. Ball is always around the zone. Hopefully he can add some velo as he matures because the control will play.
Unlike this video which seems to have a lot of violent action in his motion which will lead to control issues

motion seems violent and inconsistent. Lot of work to do refine that delivery and build a consistent strike thrower....opinion based solely on that video

Is it me or is he getting zero leg drive in that video? It's like Jake Cosart - all of the effort is coming from the arm.

He clearly is battling his stride and where he lands. Not sure if it was the mound or is a consistent issue but I agree it looks like he could get another 6 inches out front and then would land smoother and finish cleaner.

In both videos he's finishing like he's pulling the cord on a lawnmower. It's more pronounced after some pitches than others, but that is not ideal either for control or health reasons. And as Hatfield pointed out in another thread, the lower body isn't doing enough of the drive there. Impossible to see him staying as a starter with that delivery.
EDIT: Re-reading, my post was unnecessarily negative. Scherff hasn't even pitched a pro inning yet! Of course his delivery and everything is going to undergo a lot of modification, and he has the build, natural stuff, and everything else involved to one day be a major league starter. He does not yet have the delivery, but there's a chance that he will.
I think my negativity is coming some as a pushback - a lot of the glowing talk above about how Scherff is primed to reach High A and is the obvious breakout candidate, etc. I don't want to dampen enthusiasm, especially based on a couple two-minute videos, but I see a pitcher who is a long way away. That's not necessarily a bad thing, of course; again, he's never pitched a pro inning. That video was just sort of a jarring reminder to me to temper my expectations.
EDIT2: Regarding the discussion and articles from a few days ago, I would not start him in Greenville. He needs to be working on his delivery and the NYPL is the better place for a guy his age, experience, and status to be doing that. I'd be worried that challenging him with a run in the SAL would lead to him falling into bad habits in order to get hitters out, natural competitiveness being what it is and all.
