^ This. Unless Dombrowski bails in the next couple of seasons, he would only be sticking around if he has some immense sense of loyalty or otherwise gets promised the job when Dombrowski is gone at a date certain.
And at any rate, even if that happens then it'd be good to have Becerra around to handle international. Sox Director of Baseball Ops can't be flying around to VZ, DR, etc. all the time.

I didn’t realize he was so close to the top of the Sox hierarchy. But I think you just suggested several ways to keep him in the fold. Give him more authority to build the future Sox and Farm System into a juggernaught Make him GM, give him a raise to what other interested teams are likely to offer, enhance perqs, find out what he wants and when and try to accommodate. Give him free hand to build elite training camps/schools/campuses throughout the Caribbean, central and south America. Allow him to put other MLB teams in the rear view mirror when it comes to recruiting, signing and developing prospects. Let him lead, under DDo, the Sox in developing the best and best connected network for giving the Sox every advantage in international signings, and do the same in the States. If he can do this with an expanded but efficient budget, he and the investment would be worth every penny and keep the Sox highly competitive, even dominant, well into the 2030’s; in a long term cost efficient manner. If he can’t do this, he wouldn’t be worth the time and investment, but if he is as good as stated he could do this quite well and put the Sox in very strong position going forward. It’s all about retaining and empowering our best assetts to gain a substantial short and long term advantage over the competition.

Given how long his career has already been, it's not impossible to imagine Romero replacing Dombrowski. But James is on the money: at some point he takes over a team's baseball operations, he's that good. No need to look further than this year's draft to confirm that. The amount of talent and the efficient use of available $ was just one more sign of the acumen of he and his staff. Very nice to see the Sox stockpiling even more FO talent.
Add: ...but it's tough to see how hollowed out the Mets organization is getting. Of course, that emptiness starts at the very top.

The Marlins just traded for more IFA pool money. They already had the second-most behind Baltimore. They're making a hard play for the Mesa brothers and Sandy Gaston.

Miami trades for more international slot money. Really hope they don’t get any of the Cuban players especially after the pathetic fire sale they just had.

Gaston looks like he’d be a nice get if they could finagle it. I doubt they have the cash on hand, but another 500k on top of their 800k or so left might do it. Prob goes to Miami, but he’s got electric stuff even if it’s basically just 2 pitches. At 17, I’d be fine giving him 6 years to find and develop a 3rd.

It’s comedy first-blush, but I think of all those people trying so hard to do their jobs well...some of them succeeding admirably...all in the face of oblivion. It’s genuinely a black eye for baseball, that so inept and frankly, malignant, ownership group continues to piecemeal annhilihate a franchise with surprisingly rich history for its relatively short lifespan. I laugh all the time at the Mets organization, but inside sometimes I cry quietly to myself. Rotten, inept people with power ruining lives wholesale on massive scale for their own gross, bloated, delusional egos...seems to be catching these days.

I wonder what the record is for Victor Mesa’s signed in one day?

Jason Coskrey @jcoskrey Seibu Lions pitcher Yusei Kikuchi says he hasn't thought about his future yet. The Lions said yesterday they will post him if he requests it. David Laurila davidlaurilaqa 37m37 minutes ago A high-level scout on the international side told me Kikuchi has really good stuff. He expects that a lot of MLB teams are going to be interested.

The Rays signed Sandy Gaston for $2.6 mil, per Jesse Sanchez and others.

Just what Jeter does not deserve. To trade all his actual resources to sign two high-risk big ticket items? I've got no reason to bet against the Mesas (Mesae?) but this isn't exactly a franchise-building strategy. Though I am pre-emptively grumpy about when he trades them together to the Yankees in 2023 for a backup infielder who makes more money than both of them combined as part of a rebuild that doesn't actually net prospects.

From Kiley McDaniel's chat yesterday:
1:33 Mike: With the Mesas and Sandy Gaston signed, who is the top IFA left (if any)?
1:34 Kiley McDaniel: Have referenced this in a few places, but there’s basically no consensus $500K+ prospects left right now. Asia is light, there may be some hideout guys in Mexico but that is contingent on MLB opening the country pretty quickly (which is unlikely).
1:36 Kiley McDaniel: 17-19 year old latin prospects always develop late and pop up in the middle six figures, some new Cubans may pop up, etc. but there isn’t a guy right now and there isn’t even a Cuban name that’s widely known that teams are waiting on–that market is pretty barren, which is why most of the new ones you hear about are 16 years old with no track record. That age group is where the Cuban talent hasn’t been picked over yet.

Looks like Eddie R got another promotion and the International scouting got beefed up by hiring a former international scouting director as a crosschecker.

Romero is going to end up with a title of Supreme Premier Senior President in Charge of Everyone but DDo with big raises every year just to keep him around. I really hope they can hold onto him until he can take over for DDo.

I really hope they can hold onto him until he can take over for DDo. I honestly expect maybe another year out of Dombrowski before he lessens his hands-on role. He seems to relish his first opportunity at a title defense, but given his age and all he's accomplished, this could be the story to watch next fall.

Badler released his review of the Red Sox's 2018-19 international signing period, which includes an intriguing write-up of Eduardo Vaughan: www.baseballamerica.com/stories/2019-international-reviews-boston-red-sox/ Players discussed: Eduardo Lopez, Eduardo Vaughan, Bryan Gonzalez, Giancarlos Santana, Albert Feliz, Gabriel Jackson, Naysbel Marcano, Brainer Bonaci, Noelberth Romero, Wikelman Gonzalez, Eddinson Paulino, and Carlos Reyes.

Not impressed with Gonzalez' swing. Big hitch and looks slow. But he's only 16 so who knows?

If that's Jackson's hard stuff, it's impressive. Lots of movement and the delivery looks effortless and controlled.
