With the Yankees treasure trove of prospects, it would be incredibly disappointing if they signed 3 of the top 15 intl prospects while the Sox only signed 1 of the top 20.

This appears to be one of the slowest international signing periods in a while for the Red Sox. They don’t appear to be linked to any of the top ranked players. The reports about them trading for extra bonus money are encouraging however they are not linked to any guys ranked in the top 20. Perhaps they might find some diamonds in the rough by going for more quantity of players in the second tier (e.g. 20 to 40).

Nobody inside the MLB Pipeline Top 20, but those rankings vary wildly from club to club. I have to think if they're rumored (wink, wink) to be committing somewhere around $1.5M to Lopez then I think it's safe to say the Red Sox see him as one of the 20 best international guys. And Badler has him in the Top 20 as well.

Tomorrow is the beginning of the 2018-19 signing period. The Red Sox will start with a pool of $4,983,500 and can trade for extra space for a max of $8,721,125. Jesse Sanchez has a good, quick article about how international players are scouted/wind up with specific teams ( link). The Red Sox have been linked to the following players: Eduardo Lopez, OF, Dominican Republic (rumored $1.5 mil signing bonus) Eduardo Vaughan, OF, Panama (rumored $500k signing bonus) Naysbel Marcano, C, Venezuela Brainer Bonaci, SS, Venezuela Claudio Ochoa, RHP, Venezuela Elio Prado, OF, Venezuela Carlos Reyes, RHP, Dominican Republic Baseball America Rankings ( link) Baseball America AL East Preview ( link) MLB.com Rankings ( link) Fangraphs Rankings ( link)

From this seems like they've really move away from top DR talent and are focusing on Venezuala.

Eduardo Lopez is from the Dominican, right?

Eduardo Lopez is from the Dominican, right? Yup. Considering like 75% of their signings are usually from VZ, I had that stuck on my mind.

I didn't mean they were excluding Dominicans, just doing more in VZ, relatively speaking. A market inefficiency? I'd be curious about # of VZ signings Sox vs. others teams. 5 of the 7 mentioned are not Dominican. Seems to me it's perhaps a more saturated and well scouted country, as opposed to VZ and Panama.

That’s something they’ve been exploiting more in recent years due to the instability in Venezuela. While the Red Sox have remained a strong presence there, many other clubs commit more resources to places like the Dominican where it isn’t as dangerous. Because there is less competition and less visibility for many players in Venezuela it seems like they may also be a little cheaper than players from the Dominican. That’s just pure conjecture on my end though

Players and their families from Venezuela have requested that signing bonuses not be reported for obvious safety reasons.

Can anyone explain how the Yankees are able to sign so many of these international guys and we're only linked to one in the top 30?

Can anyone explain how the Yankees are able to sign so many of these international guys and we're only linked to one in the top 30? I'm guessing 2 years ago they did a great job of scouting 14 year olds. Promises made, advisors, etc. It's not like the draft where the Sox could bring in all the top 30 guys this month to have sit downs with them.
