Yasmni Thomas for arrested for going 105 mph yesterday. Needless to say, the D-Backs will probably be looking for an outfielder whether it's J.D. Martinez or not. Cargo seems like a good fit there if I'm Mike Hazen. The arrest shouldn't have anything to do with whether they want someone better than him. They already should have. They can't afford JDM regardless.

I agree to extent, but if they were looking at maybe giving someone a invite to spring training with hopes of giving back the job to Thomas, that hope just went right out the window. I agree that they can't afford J.D. Martinez either, which is why I brought up maybe Cargo.

They can't afford JDM regardless. They can if 5/$110 or whatever is realistic.

They can if 5/$110 or whatever is realistic. I don't believe that's true without dumping Greinke or Tomas. I don't necessarily think that their $115 million payroll is set in stone. I think if they really wanted to add another $22 million or so to the payroll they could. Whether they choose to or not is a different story. I'm sure the Sox probably could easily afford to top $237 million (assuming a contract for JDM for 6 years and between $150 million - $170 million and pay the penalties - they'd still turn a nice profit. You can easily debate how smart that is, but that's a different argument.

Padres sign my boy Allen Craig to a minor league deal. Looked like absolute toast with the Sox, but he strung together a great few seasons in St. Louis, pre-injury. 33 years old now, and pretty much a 1B-only without much of any juice left in the bat, it seems -- but I'll be rooting for him. Great guy.

San Francisco Giants sign center fielder Austin Jackson to a two year six million dollar contract This is a really excellent move in the Giants' attempt to win the 2012 World Series again. Snark aside: He had a rough couple seasons before his good 2017, but that seems like a pretty good value, especially for a team who could badly use even slightly-above-replacement-level production at the position.

Giants now 2mil under the luxury tax. Guessing they're done for the offseason.
But have to wonder if Austin Jackson can still play center field competently.

A-Rod hired to replace Aaron Boone as one of the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball analysts. He'll be alongside Jessica Mendoza, and then likely one of Jon Sciambi or Karl Ravech doing the play-by-play.

RE: the Austin Jackson deal, I think it's a pretty meh signing. Definitely attractive from a cost/commitment/luxury tax perspective, but given the ballpark and corner outfielders, I'd have liked to have seen them obtain a truly plus defensive center fielder. Jackson is likely in the average to somewhat below average range with the glove in center, and at the plate he's not much of a hitter vs right-handed pitching, not to mention he doesn't run anymore. He could be a close-to-replacement level player, honestly.
Jarrod Dyson would have been nice, and probably not much more expensive than Jackson. He's a worse pure hitter, but markedly superior defensively, and adds offensive value with his legs. At least Jackson's contract won't prevent them from getting a starting or platoon type center fielder if the opportunity arises.

I'm in on this booth. Wasn't a big Boone guy (although he was better than Joe Morgan, imo), and A-Rod's been pretty good on the studio shows. And I like Mendoza for the most part too.

Arod is surprisingly good in the studio. As someone who always wants to hate him, I have a hard time criticizing his work.

Mendoza makes my skin crawl with her “old ballplayer” tone.
That is one smarmy duo between Rodriguez and the new lil guy.
Between the three of them, the fumes from various hair products will be a health/fire hazard.
Shame!

Bryant is a stud and Gray's good, but in general that whole 2013 draft was just kind of bad.

Bryant is a stud and Gray's good, but in general that whole 2013 draft was just kind of bad. Well, don't forget Judge at 32 and Bellinger in the 4th, plus Graveman in the 8th and a few other ok guys, but yeah, that year is looking even worse than it did going in, which is saying something. Crawford, Frazier, and Meadows are probably the last hopes for even 2-WAR/year players from that class.

And Graveman was a college senior who got picked in the 8th round because he'd sign $5K! He has the same bWAR as everyone in the top 16 of that draft combined if you take out Bryant.
The whole draft was a mess. I'm thinking of, like, Sean Manaea, who everyone thought was good before the season, he got hurt at Indiana State, and is now good again. And Judge was that late first-round gigundo slugger that appears every year - usually those guys strike out 175 times in 300 plate appearances in the SAL and then try out college football, but Aaron Judge is a borderline MVP.
EDIT: And not to necessarily defend the Trey Ball pick, but people would have been absolutely thrilled if Stewart had fallen to them at #7, and he's basically Brandon Weeden. I can't remember for sure, but I think I wanted Braden Shipley, who will be 26 on opening day and gives up a homer every other inning in Triple-A. Meadows is still a nice prospect (he'd be #1 in the current system for sure), but it's not like he's a can't miss type either.

Whoah Brewers acquire Yellich. For Lewis Brinson, Isan Diaz, Monte Harrison, and Jordan Yamamoto. Thats a nice return. I mean, Yellich is a stud and should command a nice return, so not saying anything about who won the trade.
