Darwinzon Hernandez is a 21 year old 6-2 185lb left-handed pitcher from Venezuela that was signed in 2013 as a international free agent. He has played 4 seasons in the Red Sox minor league system starting with two years in the DSL and a year each in Lowell and Greenville.Last year with the Greenville Drive he posted a 4 win-5 loss 4.01era 103.1IP walking 49 while striking out 116 batters. Hernandez's a Plus fastball that he throws at 90-93 mph tops out at 95mph . A a potential a average to better curveball running 73-77mph with a 1 to 7 break. Change-Up is a fringe average to average potential throws it at 80-85 mph which is a clear third pitch.

Fwiw I think it was Alex Speier who reported last summer that his velocity was up, touching 97 and working around 93-94. Average LHSP velo in MLB is 91.5 or so, so that’s plus velocity to borderline plus-plus. He’s probably not going to add much more, but his stuff isn’t the issue. I thought I remembered pretty good reports on the CB and maybe some development of the change, but control/command is his major issue. He misses bats despite not hitting spots, which is good news. But he’s got, like, 30 or 40 at best control. Definitely a guy a lot of us are bullish on given the age, stuff, and handedness. If he can take a step forward (full-grade improvement) in locating the ball, he could be a big-time breakout candidate and might hit Portland by July. Salem is a very forgiving park for HR but doesn’t suppress overall offense much, if at all, from what I recall.

His delivery is really low 3/4, more pronounced than I thought I’d seen before. Gotta be real uncomfortable for LH. Misses pretty badly a few times in those videos but still gets punchouts...that’ll be exposed at higher levels unless the location improves. CB looks good, nice break and really seems to look headed for LHB shoulder before dropping in. Looks like he has some trouble finishing his pitches and doesn’t have a consistent landing. Idk, he’s got a big lower half so he might get even more velocity to go along with location if he can drop and drive more consistently and clean up his mechanics. I love his potential...he looks the part of a starter, at the least. Def made guys uncomfortable in the box.

The Prospect Handbook, where Speier put him 7th in the system, gave him 60 grades for both the fastball and slider, the latter being the weirdest (although I might hold off on giving him a 60 FB until he can control it better too). He basically threw it in one game last year and while he reportedly dominated with it in that game, I'm not giving a pitch a 60 grade based on one game.
That said, if it DOES turn out to be a 60 pitch, he's definitely a top 10 prospect in this system, even if he's headed to the bullpen.

After watching the last video he definitely looks bigger than the 185 lb that's reported and scouting reports. The second Pitch which looks like a curveball definitely has a 10-4 drop looks good but not call for a strike. He projected to start the 2018 season in Salem. If reports are true of the development of a new pitch he could definitely be a bright spot this year.

Jim Callis just released the Top 30 Red Sox Prospects . He has Hernandez ranked at #7 . Callis has him tied with Houck Buttrey and Joan Martinez having the best Fastball in the system graded at 65 (20-80). I'm happy to Hernandez jump into the Top 10. He may not help the Big Club this year but I think he be th most talked about this season. Here are the Grades that Callis gave Hernandez's pitches Fastball; 65/Curveball;50/Slider;55/Changeup;50/Control;45/Overall;50. www.mlb.com/news/red-soxs-2018-preseason-top-30-prospects-list/c-266681700?tid=151437456

The MLB Pipeline preseason top 30 prospects for the Red Sox was recently released and written by Jim Callis. Darwinzon Hernandez came in at #7 on this list while scoring a 65 on the 20 - 80 scale of the scouting grades. Hernandez's fastball dials in at 93-97 mph with late life. Callis goes on to say that he needs to refine his secondary offerings and upgrade his control and command and needs to limit the effort in his delivery where are he still learning to repeat.Though he has a way to go to develop these skills he could still be a very intriguing arm this season.

I couldn't find another thread specific to Hernandez (perhaps its under a nickname?).
Does anyone know how serious the relief appearances are? Was this just a way of keeping his innings down at the end of the season, or does the team intend for Hernandez to be a reliever going forward?

The team said it's an innings thing and he'll go into camp a SP next year. But as I and others have said, they are certainly going to pay attention to how he looks in relief.

I saw Darwinzon pitch in Greenville last year and than met him when I visited the Red Sox Dominican facility last November. He is a very pleasant young man who really looks the part. He has size and he has a presents. His stuff is very good, as others have noted. If he can gain more control he has a shot at being a 3 or 4 in the bigs.

I was looking at some of the Sox’s several talented-but-flawed bunch of pitching prospects. Any of the lot of Groome, Mata, Houck, even Shawaryn or Crawford could overcome their individual major flaws (Groome, health; Mata, command consistency; Houck, limitations of repertoire; Shawaryn, severe splits/CH development; Crawford, quality of stuff). And several made some strides this year in those specific problem areas (with the exception of Mata, who appears to be growing into his difficulties, and should hopefully adjust, and Groome, whose health issues got worse with TJ). But I just wanted to finish with the guy I find most “intriguing” in the bunch: www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=sa828318&position=PDarwinzon had been awesome after coming back from injury this year. And while he continues to struggle with his control, FB and CB are probably both already plus. His velo is terrific, and it just seems to continue improving. He looks like he might work 94+ from the left. He seems to have a genuine HR-suppressing ability, and he gets a TON of IFFB despite being a GB pitcher. He’s the perfect *type* of LHSP for Fenway in that sense. He’s young (he’ll play all of next year at age 22, presumably starting in AA). He misses bats. And yet he’s struggling with even finding the plate (let alone commanding it) a la Sean Newcombe. If he ever gets to even average control/command, he could be a helluva pitcher. Lots of interesting pitchers in the system right now...often frustrating, but always tantalizing.

With the injury to Eovaldi and the questionable depth in our bullpen, when do we consider bringing up Darwinzon? I don't feel he needs AAA innings. Just a bit more time working on his command in AA.

Hernandez is NOT ready, especially to start games. He has significant command issues that will get him into real trouble in the majors in a starting role right now.

Could you see Dombrowski (a GM not opposed to bringing up a young pitcher) using Hernandez in a relief role later on in the season? Giving him a taste of MLB hitting and perhaps limiting his innings this season as well.

I'm not any expert, but it's a pretty much easy guess and almost a formality that the Sox are going to bring up Hernandez in July or August (latest by September) when the Sox feel he's reached a certain limit on innings they want him to pitch as a starting pitcher in the minor leagues. They'll probably bring him out for short stints out of the bullpen in Boston to finish the goal number of innings that they want him finishing around for the year of 2019. This might be even the plan next year too, unless they feel he's ready to start in the majors and his command issues are better in 2020. Add- Cora already said at the end of spring training- "he'll be back this year."

I wasn't necessarily suggesting a starting role. Depending on Eovaldi's elbow, we might want to consider a bullpen approach every 5th day. Darwinzon's command still needs a lot of work, but it's something to consider shortly, IMO. I have scouted for years, and this is just my opinion. Darwinzon is not far from being MLB ready. I worked for the Nats for several years when I lived in Harrisburg, scouting their AA affiliate. I haven't seen an arm like his in the system in a long, long time.
