Yo, so the SP contingent arrives on Friday in Fort Myers. This can be a spot for discussion, but what do you guys want to hear about while we're down there? (Note: put whatever you want, but note that we'll probably be reporting on the obvious stuff like "how does Groome look?" Feel free to post it, but yeah, give us a little credit. )

Would love to hear reports on Darwinzon Hernandez' new slider and general command. It's hard not to dream on him.

Yeah, what sushi did you guys eat?
Seriously, though.
Thoughts on Groome after Speier's notes from yesterday. Tell us about Scherff. And then some more about Scherff. How does Houck look with his reworked repertoire? Obviously reports on Darwinzon as JimEd just mentioned. Anything new with Mata? Uptick in velo? Is Lakins healthy and ready to go? How does Raudes look? He was SO young last year, there's still potential there. What's up with Ty Buttrey? Is it a control issue? Something else? Stuff is there - or is it? Is Trenton Kemp ready to go?
OK. Basically everything.

Full Blu Sushi draft recap. Remember, the one at the Town Center is Brahma sushi now. (Pulling back the curtain for folks, Saturday night is always the SP sushi bash, at which we order a ton of sushi and selection of pieces proceeds in a snake-style draft by seniority. I almost literally don't commit to going full vegetarian specifically because of this meal.) Me, Ian, and Chaz will almost certainly be hitting one of the locations that's still Blu at some point after Mike and Matt leave, though.

Some good things have already been listed. Here are some additional things I'm interested in terms of development:
- Jake Thompson's arsenal, not only in terms of how his stuff looks, but literally his pitch type usage rates. Does he have pitch type tendencies when looking for an out pitch? - Cole Brannen's power potential (if any): Combo of strength and swing path - Ockimey's defense. I'm hoping he can make eventual gains to look like an avg defender at 1B - Castellanos defensive home. Is he seeing time in the OF? If so, does he look like a major liability out there? - Schellenger's velocity. It sounds like in his prime he was upper 90's but operated more in the lower 90s last year. Not sure thats entirely true, but I'm interested to hear how hard he is throwing. - Roldani Baldwin's defense. If he eventually looks like major league catcher from a defensive perspective, he becomes a pretty interesting guy with his offensive profile. I think his CS% from last year was solid IIRC.
...and in general, I'm just very antsy to hear scouting reports on any new guys that we would have typically been first exposed to from instructs in the fall. Not having that makes this Spring Training trip even more intriguing.

Would like to know if Mata has grown since last year, strength wise. Would like to know his velocity and where it usually sits now and where it tops out.
Mata is a real wildcard and diamond in the ruff if he can become say Tanner Houck in terms of velocity. He has a real chance of becoming that too.
Imagine if Pedro Martinez got his hands on this kid (if he hasn't already).
Edit- Iakovos has already touched on this already a little.

I think Mata has a chance to become something like a Rick Porcello. I hope the staff here sees him live and agrees to a certain degree.

Bobby Dalbec
Anything new on this power prospect? Could he be the power hitter the club needs in a year from now? Is he still working his way back? Is he still having trouble making contact and striking out at a lousy rate? Does Dalbec really look the part? He is actually one of my favorites, and I'm hoping for a big turn around this year. Are 18 and 19 year olds throwing the ball past him and mediocre breaking balls stumping him? Will we see him in AA this year?

In his final 80 PA last year Dalbac hit .333/.425/.681 with 9 BB, 9 2B, 5 HR... with a 35% K%. He was awesome all year hitting the ball in the air. Obviously his bat is potent, but major issues to work out. Also, @jnorris427 is tweeting from Sox minor league games today.

In one of the minor league games today, I watched Kervin Suarez hit two singles and a grand slam. Have not heard much about him but am now interested. Any info you find on him would be appreciated.

If you guys can get everyone's height & weight so we could have the most up-to-date and accurate information, that would be awesome. While you're at it, ought to get their blood pressure and heart rate too. . . . Oh, and check for hernias

Is there anything to read into the fact that guys like Chatham and Hill are in a lineup that seems to be featuring mostly GCL and Lowell guys? Or is that the way that things are done during the spring training games for minor leagues?

We may have lost Durden, but at least there's still Dearden.

Can you discuss the prospects that are playing at the end of a lot of major league games such as the MLB manager's son's Matheny and Lovullo as well as catcher Rei?

Beautiful!! Where's the conch tho?...a favorite.
According to a devotee friend, Sarasota has some 30 'sushi-serving' restaurants. J-Pan stands out.
If you get out a bit, Umi is a good one in north Ft. Myers...very good Miso as well.

I was pretty encouraged by this. Raudes could be flying under the radar potentially after some of his struggles last year. Its easy to forget he is still only 20, and although I don't see him adding a ton of velocity, if he can sit in the low 90s w/ several average off speed offerings and above average control/command....he could still find his way to the backend of a major league rotation in 2-3 years.

Raudes did look pretty good. I really liked the bits I saw, although Chaz sat on the whole start. Might be a riser in the next rankings.
Anyone got questions?
The one giant fail from the trip - we were there for five days, plan being we'd get a whole turn through the rotation. However, Mata didn't pitch while we were down there. Doesn't appear to be an injury - he was otherwise fully participating - so I'm hoping it's more that they're trying to line him up or otherwise just ease into the season with him. But for instance, he threw the same day as Scherff last week, but didn't throw yesterday when Scherff threw. Giant sadface on that one.

Can you discuss the prospects that are playing at the end of a lot of major league games such as the MLB manager's son's Matheny and Lovullo as well as catcher Rei? Welcome to the site. I'd suggest you check out the scouting reports on those players' pages, which you can access from www.soxprospects.com/org.htm. If you have more specific questions, fire away! In brief: Matheny: projects as a future 4th or 5th outfielder. No standout tools. Lovullo: organizational depth. Rei: Has disappointed since being a third-round pick. Reportedly his defense has gotten back up to being above-average, in line with pre-draft scouting reports, after a poor stint in Lowell behind the plate that may have been affected by a thumb injury. Still probably projects as an up-and-down catcher, probably.
