I just saw that Richie Martin was selected by the Orioles from the A's. I guess he never panned out but I remember catching a few of his games his initial season when he was playing for my home state Lake Monsters as a first round pick. I remember thinking he was maybe somebody to follow as he moves up the ranks but guess he hasn't panned out yet. Good spotting but I'm guessing Martin won't be the typical 25th man, I'm guessing he'll be the O's everyday SS. Methinks this one slipped through the Sox cracks, he would have easily been worth a non 40 man trade.

I remember catching one of his first if not first pro games and thinking wow this guy has some serious tools. He hit a monster shot to straight away center and I think stole a bag later in the game. I definitely would have figured as a former first round pick not that long ago the A's would have protected him from the rule 5. As was pointed out too he had a nice bounce back year at double A and may be pointed back upwards. The O's definitely got a nice little project on their hands with this pick. I'll be rooting for the kid that's for sure, except when he plays the Red Sox of course.

We should give credit to DDo for correctly saving the roster spot and giving Ockimey a full year at AAA to see if he can improve some of those splits. I think it would be interesting if someone like Speier would talk to teams and ask if they would have selected Reyes given the opportunity. Also, Chris H did well on his predictions except for the one minor league phase.

From the second he was left unprotected it was pretty widely speculated that the Orioles might take him first. If that many national writers speculated about it, I find it hard to believe the club didn't notice him.

I was thinking prior to setting the 40 man when the Sox had an open slot rather than Colten Brewer. As it is, the A's got nothing. Even with Brewer, the Sox have players with less upside than Martin on their 40 man and he would have been worth a Quiroz.

They also could've traded for him after that date, and certainly they have a number of players of value equal to Quiroz.

Yes, I would have much preferred him over some of our 40 man people, Walden for example, especially in light of Xander's status.

I am glad Okimey made it because this team wil need first basemen after this season. They both will be up and I hoping Okimey progresses enough and he gets a shot maybe even against righties like Moreland. They can save over 12 million. Plus there not getting any younger either. That’s what I hope to happen. I like the pontential of the power bat .
