Hanley had a .996 fielding percentage in his first ever season as a first baseman, 2016 with the Sox, and hasn't committed an error there since. Last year, Moreland had a .995 fielding percentage as the Sox' primary first baseman. Hanley was a former shortstop and knows how to field ground balls. He also knows how to play catch so I think he can handle the position just fine. I haven't committed any errors at 1B. Errors are a terrible judge of defensive talent. It's about how many balls you get to that others would not. Hanley has an UZR of +7.4 in 2018 (vs Moreland's +10.6) and +1 DRS vs Moreland's 0.
So by DRS Hanley is a better defensive first baseman than Moreland in 2018.
Not that defensive metrics are an accurate measure of a player.

He's probably slightly below average. He's probably good to great. In his career at 1B, he's -0.3 UZR/150g and -3 DRS/1200 Innings. Slightly below average. In any event, signing Moreland was smart because he's way better than Hanley and Lind overall.

Lind has an opt-out on July 1st. Given that he's kind of tearing it up right now, I wouldn't be surprised to see him go.

Pearce is kind of a similar player albeit from the other side of the plate. But Lind is a major league hitter and could have a spot on the team for the post-season when with all the off-days you can take an extra hitter (5th bench guy) and drop off that 7th bullpen guy. I think a LH pinch-hitter off the bench like Lind in a key spot could be useful especially when the catcher's spot is up, but I think if they were going to use him they would have called him up by now. So I would anticipate he's a goner.

The Pearce acquisition & Bradley starting to hit lately probably make it hard for Lind to be called up. It's too bad if we can't get him to stick around. He's very good insurance for Mitch Moreland.

I might be a minority of 1, but I think he can be Steve Pearce from the left side and help in September when rosters expand and he can be the 25th guy off the bench and be a viable LH pinch-hitter, kind of like a Matt Stairs type. He and Pearce would be able to give the Sox two pinch-hitting options from both sides of the plate and they'd still have 3 roster spots left for their hitters (Leon, Phillips, and maybe Lin?) assuming they only go with 11 pitchers.
