Cheap option at the catching position. He's making 6.25 AAV this year and he will cost around 3 million AVV wise around the trade deadline.
You throw in Leon and a B type of prospect (maybe the Rays even take Swihart), and I bet you can get Ramos.
Ramos is better at the catching position than anything the Sox currently have and won't cost a whole lot prospect wise. I'd be all for this move.

Ramos had a forgettable year coming off of his bad knee injury last year, but he's a solid 2 win player at the catching position this year.
That might be one or two wins more than Leon and Vazquez will combine for this season.

Although his receiving and throwing aren't what they were in DC, he's always been able to hit. Not the poor plate dicipline style of hitting either. He crushes mistakes. (At least he did in DC) imo he would fit well with us. Fluent in both English and Spanish, has always called a good game, and man he might end up with an extra 25 doubles at Fenway with the way he hits the ball. Just going off watching the Nats and now having him on one of my fantasy teams . Something tells me the rays will want a pitching prospect as well as leon and/or Swihart. Apart from CJ Cron, Ramos is the only good healthy position Player they have now. Edit for accidentally pressing enter too soon.

The great part about throwing in Leon is that Ramos would only cost you a extra 2 million AAV wise to acquire, leaving a little room to go get a reliever also.

Yes, Leon, and probably Swihart - if they think he can pitch, but it will take a lot more. I would think they'd look at guys like Beeks, Darwinzon Hernandez and Mike Shawaryn. Perhaps Josh Ockimey. Maybe Bobby Dalbec. There could be something there for a trade to occur. I have to look up how much service time Ramos has left. It's an interesting alternative to Realmuto anyways.

Ramos is a rental. Free agent after the year. He would be a interesting resign candidate though. He can DH on days Martinez plays the field. Split half the catching with Vazquez. I like Ramos, another right handed bat against left handed pitching with this team would be a benefit too.

I agree that Realmuto would be vastly preferable, but probably not at the cost you’d expect. Interesting idea; Ramos would certainly seem a good bet to benefit from the Wall, and he’s certainly likely to come cheaply given his rental status. C is a clear position for obvious upgrade, too. And Ramos is a good enough hitter that he could PH/DH. I think this would be a smart move; seems a pretty good bet to add 1-1.5 wins versus what they have. It’s marginal improvement but it’s real. I’d prefer not to send Swihart back, but Leon and an arm or two for the cost-cutting Rays might do it.

If the Sox don't plan on giving Swihart a chance to catch semi-regularly at some point in the not-so-distant future, then I'm fine with giving him up. So if Tampa believes in Swihart it could be Leon and Swihart for Ramos, but more likely it would be Leon and an arm as you say. I could see them wanting Beeks who would fit in for what they're looking for - a hybrid starter/reliever or Shawaryn who would also fit that description. Or perhaps they'd like Buttrey who has the best arm of any upper relief prospect the Sox have. If the Sox look for a lefty reliever (more than a LOOGY), I think we see either Beeks or more likely Poyner go. I think among the position players Ockimey, Dalbec, and even Espinal would be the most vulnerable. I think Dalbec would be #1 on the most likely position player to be dealt given that he has a ton of power, but it is a fair question as to how bad he'd hit in the majors given that he strikes out a ton and is still only hitting .215 in A ball. And we know that DD likes to deal from surplus and with the Sox having young Devers at 3b for the foreseeable future and Casas and Northcutt drafted recently, I would think the Sox would part with Dalbec if they're looking for some help in their lineup, say a corner OF who can hit a bit that would push Benintendi into CF if they think that getting an OF who can hit would be an upgrade to JBJ overall. Anyways I like the Ramos idea a lot, because with him being a rental, not only can they upgrade the position, but if Swihart isn't dealt, that opens up a catching spot for him next season behind Vazquez if they want to go that route.

Yeah I mean the Sox could go a number of different ways with a Ramos deal imo.
They could deal him for Vazquez straight up and make that a 1 for 1 swap.
They could make a Leon and Swihart trade.
They could make a Leon and prospect (Roniel Raudes or a Mike Shawaryn type).
Honestly if the Sox assume all of Ramos' salary, that takes huge weight off of the cheap Rays backs and gets the price to come down by a lot in terms of trade, I'd think.

Yeah, Realmuto really is the prize, but ever since the Sox lost Jay Groome to TJ surgery, that dream has kind of died for me. The Sox just don't have enough to get a player the likes of Realmuto, so if you're looking for alternatives, Ramos is the best bet. He fits the Sox in a number of ways. He's been able to go to all fields throughout the course of his career, but he's up to a 42+% pull rate this season, which is a good fit for Fenway. Ramos is still only what, 30 years old too. Even when he's not hitting much, he's crushing mistakes in the bottom to middle of the order like m1keyboots pointed out. He's good enough to DH, so if the Sox wanted to, they could get Vazquez in the lineup that way.

I like Ramos a lot and would love to see him come here. Not sure he would be as cheap as we'd need him to come, though. The farm is just so thin, any more losses of significant talent will hurt. Tampa Bay has had a real lack of depth so maybe Brian Johnson would interest them more than other teams.

I just don’t know if I’d touch the catching situation and introduce a new full time guy to a new staff for the next few months. I would definitely look into upgrading it in the offseason.
