I know Brian Dozier’s name has been bandied about, but he’s having a down year. I think if you’re looking for a 2b who’s a rental and probably won’t be especially costly, this is your guy: www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=10339&position=2BHis defense is passable. Pretty average but he won’t hurt you. That’s light years better than Nunez. But the bat is where it’s at. Followed up a 127 wRC+ last year with 137 so far this year. It’s not smoke and mirrors, either, just good old fashioned “hitting his prime” adaptation. www.fangraphs.com/blogs/scooter-gennett-breaks-out-the-old-fashioned-way/I have some minor concerns re: how his power will play in Fenway, and his BABIP (due for regression) but I’d much prefer the guy who’s putting it all together over the guy who’s headed in the wrong direction in Dozier.

I really like the player but I believe he's not a free agent until after 2019, so he should cost a lot more than Dozier.

The cost definitely goes up, even if the Reds are in a good position to trade him with Suarez and Senzel coming (idk how the SS experiment is going for him). And at that point, it’s probably true that they’re not going to entice the Reds with quantity (which has its own dangers for an already-thin system). It would obviously create problems when/ if Pedroia comes back too, although they’re first-division problems. They could theoretically recoup most of that traded value if they flipped him in the offseason, but that’s getting really tricky. As much as I wanna dream on a cheap Dozier acquisition and a glorious reversal...I’m skeptical. Though his RH power and steady defense would help a lot. I still *really* hope they jettison Nunez and install Lin for now. It’s tough coming up with genuine upgrades for this team. I just love what Gennett’s done, and he looks to be getting even better. An outstanding contact-oriented LH hitter with solid power would be a great fit for their lineup, and he’s affordable. Going from a replacement level player to a guy on pace for almost 6 WAR would be a *huge* upgrade on a team where huge upgrades are pretty tough to come by. Part of me wants to see them get really creative, even if it’s pretty irrational.

I'm not sure what's happening to Dozier this year, but the Sox have a ton of home games left and Dozier has a 50 percent pull rate on the season.

I'm all aboard the Scooter hype train and if they could make it work he'd be a perfect fit for sure
I'm not sold on Dozier at all but given the fact he's a rental and playing poorly he seems like a dart throw who could be had for pieces that won't hurt. Nunez needs to be replaced, and fortunately it should be a buyer's market, most of the contenders don't need 2B options and there are several rental options potentially available: Dozier, Asdrubal Cabrera, Lowrie, LeMahieu, etc. Cabrera probably isn't a good match because the Mets will likely prioritize financial relief over maximizing the talent return. I'd be ok with waiting out the market and taking whoever is left on July 31st, given the budget/system...but man, Scooter in this lineup would be fun.
