I love prospects like Owens. I'm just over getting excited about them until they do something at a challenging level. AA and above. Thanks for passing on the article.

Saw quite a few Greenville games the past few seasons, and I like this kid the best of all the pitchers I have seen. (Note: Missed seeing Barnes)
Seems like his fastball has some late movement and lots of life. If his secondary pitches develop, he could become a top prospect.

He is real laid back and seems to be able to handle the ups and downs. Looking forward to how high he "flys" this year.

How much does Owens work on his secondary pitches while in Salem this year?
Of his secondary pitches, do any show signs of becoming a plus pitch as he develpops?

I saw him a lot also, but thought he looked really raw. He would cruise along mowing down batters, but then lose it, leave the ball up and get absolutely hammered. He needs a lot of work on the consistency of his delivery. His curve is good, but he tips it off with his slot and his pace (a lot slower). Without real progress in these aspects, he will get hammered in AA.

His height and length are going to make it perpetually difficult for him to maintain a consistent release point, and as pointed out by Newman, the sheer variety of his arsenal (low-90s fastball, high-80s sinker, high-70s changeup, high-60s curveball) makes it hard for him to hold his arm slot and release steady. That said, it also gives him great deception and lets him generate swings-and-misses. It might take him a while to grow into his body and develop the consistency it takes to succeed in the upper minors. It's easy to dream on Owens, but there's also many hurdles to cross before he can get there.

How does he compare to Lester at the same age? I know Lester threw harder, but he was also a pretty raw high school kid with lots of projectability.

There's a bit of intelligence there, at the very least baseball intelligence. Thoughtful guy and, if we take him at his word, very, very competitive.

Odd that he asked him about Cecchini but not Swihart. I would have liked to hear his opinion on throwing to him. Definitely a worthwhile read though.

Any chance the opposing batter in the simulated game was Shaq Thompson?

Most interesting part is his changeup. I thought it was no better than a solid pitch. Was it improved or did Alex Speier exaggerate?

The way I read it is those are scouts relaying the grade of his changeup (70). I don't think Alex would presume to have that kind of expertise. He's smart enough to know he's not qualified to make that claim.

After Sept. of 2011 and last year where everything possible that could go wrong did go wrong. And, even then some. It feels like things are turning in a positive way this spring. JBJ looking great in the OF. Webster and DeLaRosa on the brink of making the Sox. Bogaerts and Christian Vazquez opening eyes everywhere. Reports like this on Henry Owens. I haven't even mentioned Matt Barnes. And, it seemed like he was about the only positive thing we could talk about last summer. And, the 7th pick in the upcoming draft.

Have heard raves about him all month. RT @thomasjcarvalho: @ What do you think of Henry Owens? Touched 95 today and added 14 lbs.

It doesn't appear to be archived on EEI's site but I listened to his interview with Speier on "Down on the Farm" last year and Owens is pretty clearly a bright guy, very eloquent and thoughtful especially for a baseball player.
