Not worth playing if he's going to risk worsening an injury. At least he's experienced it once.

The mystery of why Chavis hasn’t been playing is solved. Michael Chavis, 3B/1B -- The Red Sox hoped to get their top prospect some more at-bats after he was suspended for the first 80 games of 2018 for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, but a sore wrist upended those plans, as Chavis never suited up for Mesa and was removed from the Solar Sox roster on Wednesday. The 2014 first-rounder from Georgia batted .298/.391/.538 with nine homers in 46 games (mostly in Double-A) this year but will not get a chance to win a second AFL championship after helping the Peoria Javelinas to the title last fall. amp.mlb.com/299544702-bobby-dalbec-works-on-approach-in-fall-league.amp.html?__twitter_impression=trueHad actually heard it was a different injury (and was trying to confirm), but same difference.

Cold Dalbec this week. He's 2 for his last 22 (both doubles, natch) with 12 strikeouts, 3 walks. .200/.321/.378, 43.4% K rate overall in 12 AFL games.
Beyond the level of competition, it's also worth pointing out that Dalbec has had LONG season, particularly coming off an injury last year. He's up over 550 PA, compared with less than 350 last year. Wouldn't blame him at all if he's a little gassed.

Curious to see if Cora’s comment on viewing 230 avg 30Hr 70 rbi players not being winning players affects FO attitude towards Dalbec. He kinda profiles that way. Guessing he will get moved in right deal.

Maybe, maybe not. Here's Dombrowski's take: Notice that the power word snuck in there three times (with two pluses thrown in for good measure). I think he likes him.

If anything that sounds like he's trying to advertise him to other teams as a trade chip. He could've done the cliche coachspeak about how he's made strides with his patience and overall hitting, but the fact that he kept harping on the power sounded like he was trying to catch other teams' attention.

Organization doesn't have Ted Williams any longer to work with power hitters who strike out a ton. Reference Butch Hobson, who Williams worked with tirelessly on that issue.
Agree the K problem will do nothing but get worse the higher he gets in the system. AFL is probably the most advanced pitching he's seen and this is the result, I take that over being tired as an excuse.
He's probably got some kind of MLB future, but really needs to shorten his swing.

I'd just note that it's really hard to watch Bobby Dalbec for even like 10 minutes and not just start blurting out "POWER."
Anyway, Quiroz was the story last night - solo homer and a pair of walks. Up to .280/.486/.600 in eight games.

Anyone going to the AFL all-star game Saturday?

Good Dalbec last night! 2 for 4 with a two-run homer in the ninth to secure the win for Mesa. Ockmiey also doubled. Quiroz was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. Quiroz was only playing in April and the end of August, when Dalbec was at his slumpiest, and they both are good but never in the same game in the AFL, so the only reasonable assumption here is that only one of them can be good at once.
Santiago Espinal, or as the National media seems to refer to him now "that bum who was traded for Steve Pearce," was 3 for 4 with two doubles. Seriously, the Pearce trade was good, and I liked it at the time, but Espinal is a nice player. I think he's a major league utility man, and Toronto getting that for three months of Pearce when they obviously weren't going anywhere this year was a solid move by them.

Every time I think Santiago Espinal's name, I do it in Dr. Nick Riviera's voice from the Simpsons:

I took in a few games in Hartford besides when the Sea Dogs were in town and saw Espinal play shortly after the trade. Toronto had moved him to second because of Bichette (Does it seem strange to anyone else Dante's son is a shortstop?) and he made a highlight reel defensive play diving to the shortstop side of second, getting up and throwing out the hitter at first. Also had a ground ball double down the third base line. Should be at least a utility guy but we are all happy with the return no matter what he becomes.

I also have a certain amount of weird vibes when I see Bo Bichette is a SS. Completely feel you.

Does anyone know the particulars or extent of Chavis' wrist injury? He has been out of action for many weeks w/o explanation.

If Josh Taylor is really on the radar for being added to the 40-man, striking out Vlad Jr. last night is a really good point in his favor.

I have no idea what's ailing him but I got to be that guy and ask the question: Is Chavis injury prone? I mean, the guy can't stay healthy for a whole season! Since he's been in the system, he suffered from injuries every single season and it sidelined him for sometime and he was DHing a lot even when he was playing because of those mentioned injuries (IIRC last year it was he throwing elbow). In 2016 he played 70 games in the field, in 2017 it was 71 games and he added 20 in the AFL, that's not good for a prospect than needs to work on his defense. Health is a skill IMO and I think it should be counted when you rank prospects.

Watching Darwinzon Hernandez' 98 4-seamer and backdoor slider in the AFL allstar game last night makes one wonder if the Red Sox will have him in a 3-inning relief or opener role by August

I don’t want to nitpick Dalbec’s 2-2 night because two hits are two hits, but he could have easily been 0-2. His first hit was an infield single where he got the barrel of the bat over top the ball on a pitch high in the zone. Second hit was a bloop single into center. Didn’t strike out though, which is great news.
I didn’t see the hit that Hernandez let up, but the strikeout was a thing of beauty. The K pitch was a very Sale-esque slider that looked like it just dove at the right-handed batters feet. Absolutely gorgeous.

Dalbec also threw a laser to first base on a grounder that was hit to him.

dalbec seems a lot more likely to become a chris davis rather than a giancarlo stanton...if another club values him in a trade i wouldn't hesitate to include him.

Chris Davis's pre-2017 bat with Bobby Dalbec's defense is an annual All-Star. From 2012-16, Davis averaged 3.7 bWAR per season.
