Great for Worcester and honestly it's probably best for Boston. I would think having Triple A closer the city is best for them. Sucks for RI though. I really liked McCoy Stadium. I'm from CT and would kill for a Red Sox minor league team. Would do wonders for New Haven or Bridgeport. All we have is the Yard Goats ( Rockies) and the Tigers in Norwich which for the life of me I can't figure out why in the world they have an affiliated team in Norwich CT. I just looked it up on Google maps and they're both about the same distance from Boston. There was about 4 minutes difference in the commute as of right this minute. Am I missing something? No, they are about as far away. I'm sure that was part of the appeal with Worcester. You're not losing anything in terms of commute to Boston for the players shuttling back and forth especially. Not to mention the ceiling of more attendance with a higher population in and around Worcester. Worcester is huge and is highly populated with a lot of wealth surrounding it.

Will there be a lower classification team in McCoy Stadium in 2021? Maybe, but not a Red Sox affiliate, as they are committed to Portland and Lowell, and own Salem outright. (The Carolina League would never come this far north -- and neither would the Sally League.)

Providence metro(1.6 million) is much bigger then Worcester metro (950k). Bigger factor is that it's a much better deal for the team then what rhode island was offering. From what i can gather the team is responsible for 30 million instead of 38 million and it sounds like the team won't be responsible for cost overruns; which RI wouldn't agree to. Though the only thing it changes for me is that it would take me about 15 minutes longer to get there.

Maybe it can be counted as part of the metro area, but I think about Providence as it's separate entity altogether. People from Providence shouldn't be too ticked off, it's only a 45 minute to a hour drive from Providence to Worcester. Pawtucket is way further out though. I'm sure a lot of Pawtucket people will never want to see a AAA game again past 2021.

Wow - I was born, and lived in, Pawtucket - born in 1956, went off to grad school in 1978 - my parents were there until my dad passed away in 2007. So many memories - the 4th of July Fireworks were fired from McCoy, I went to lots of games when I was young.
No real feelings about it either way, except for nostalgia - one more thing that is no longer going to be where I spent so much time growing up - and Pawtucket is just a down and out town, just kind of depressed and depressing - this won't help.
Glad for Worcester though (one bad nick name - the 'Worst Sox!)

One thing that this does is that it opens up other opportunities for people outside of Worcester to see a game too. Worcester is right in the middle of everything.
You're a hour and a half from New Hampshire. You're an hour away from Springfield. You're 45 minutes away from Connecticut. An hour and a half from Hartford. An hour away from Providence. 45 minutes away from Boston. That's basically every major city in New England that's a hour or so drive away.
You can't really say that about Pawtucket. You had the north and south shore (and Boston) and the rest of Rhode Island in Pawtucket's case.
I don't know if that came into the minds of the owners of the PawSox, and I'm sure it's really only about money, but there's opportunities for people around the area to catch a minor league baseball game that haven't experienced one before.

I like it. Could never bond with McCoy due to the elevation of the infield seating bowl. One of the nicest aspects of milb is kids being close to the players. Would have been nice if they made it happen in Providence as the minor league teams in New England would be more nicely spread out. Mixed feelings on lucchino. Would often cringe when he got involved in baseball operations but he certainly has a talent for other projects. Camden yards still looks great and I liked the work that Janet Marie smith did at Fenway, not a whole lot of space to work with there but I think it was done nicely. In Manchester N.H the stadium deal was very contentious and while marketing a blue jays affiliate has been a challenge for them. The section of mill buildings along the river have all been renovated and occupied. The local colleges gobblied up all the remaining space near the stadium.

It's relatively uncommon these days for minor league teams to carry the same name as their major league affiliate, and I'm surprised that the ownership group isn't taking the opportunity to drop the Red Sox name altogether and go with something new and original. That said, there is risk in letting fans choose, and the names of some minor league teams have become quite silly (e.g., Jumbo Shrimp, Baby Cakes, Rubber Ducks).

Worcester Rockets? www.space.com/19944-robert-goddard.htmlRobert H. Goddard, the American father of modern rocketry, built and tested the world's first liquid-fuel rocket in 1926. His achievement is considered as significant as the Wright Brothers' first flight. Over the course of his career, Goddard not only developed the theoretical calculations for rocket flight but also made practical advances in rocket design and construction. Early life Robert Hutchings Goddard was born on Oct. 5, 1882, in Worcester, Mass., the only surviving child of Fannie Louise Hoyt and Nahum Danford Goddard. Interested in science as a child, Goddard became intrigued by space after reading H. G. Wells' science fiction novel, "The War of the Worlds." Goddard enrolled as a student at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he attracted attention in 1907 when he tried to fire a powder rocket from the basement of the physics building. He received his Bachelor of Science in 1908, and went on to attain his master's and doctorate in physics from Clark University.

Worcester Rubylegs would be a nice name. Even if historians called the MLB team that after the fact.
So on Bertrand and Zo an interesting point was made.... If Pawtucket tries to bring in another minor league at some point, the Woo Sox would have to approve. Since Pawtucket is close enough to Worcester that they would still control the milb territory rights.
I wonder if the Sox would consider moving Salem to Pawtuckut? If that wasn't too far for the Carolina League. I doubt Sea Dog's owners would want to move. I could see Lucchino approving another Sox affilate moving there.

If people from New England pronounced the letter "R" it would sound like "Warsox." Which wouldn't be half bad.

Exactly what I was thinking. While it's no closer to Boston, it's much more accessible to decent sized populations of New Englanders.

My concern/curiosity is traffic.
I just came back from Maine to Albany, NY. 495 South to 290. There was a ,line 4 miles long waiting to get on 290 (and being smart, I satyed in the mnidle lane and jumped in front a truck just before the exit). But all traffic there is BAD. I can never remember no traffic at that intersection other than like Jan/Feb/March. (In fact, I can never rememeber anything but traffic nightmares wherever I travel through MA unless it's the dead of winter.
But seriously, is this going to make a bad traffic situation worse? Maybe it just life in MA? It would be nice if they address this, too.
