The GCL Sox were destroyed by the opposing starting pitcher. After a leadoff single was erased by a strike em out throw em out double play, Xavier Javier set down fifteen of the next seventeen batters. The two he didn’t get ended up creating the only score thus far for us, with a walk and a reach by error. Javier’s final line was 6 IP, 1 H, 1 unearned run, 1 walk, and 11 Ks.

In the bottom of 10th in GCL. Regular baseball. Not using the new rule of starting a runner at 2nd

Chavis now at .636 at Pawtucket. Not too shabby. September call up possibility.

Ok so now that the GCL season is over, who are some guys that may get a cup of coffee in Lowell/Greenville. Last year, Pedro Castellanos went to Greenville and Brannen, Lozada, Suarez, and Juan Perez got a few games in Lowell.

Speaking with Head of Scouting, Ian Cundall, he says, "Top performers or guys who are more regarded prospects have a chance, [like] Abreu, Howlett, Marrero from the hitting side. Also watch out for "any college arms from the pitching side".

Bobby Bombs has been slumping lately but he hit a towering 3 run home run today (6th in Portland) and a double

As far as Mi Rule 5 picks go the Sox did a solid job of snagging Tendler. He’s been useful in Portland this year.

You are right about that. He filled the role he was acquired to do quite well and is a useful organisational guy. Unfortunately for him, he's 27 and is not likely to improve, but he's done what he could for the Sea Dogs.

We still have a long way to go to rebuild the system. But it seems to have a better second half of the season. The first half was dreadful!

If you count the recent graduates at the bottom, the young Sox are stacked. Mookie, X, Benny, ERod, and Devers: all 25 or under. Swihart is 26. If Dalbec, Chavis, and/or Ockimey make it, they can have a lineup of young players (except Pedey and JDM, which is fine by me).

Interesting that, unless the game logs are incorrect, they are not using the automatic runner on second in the minor league playoffs. Or at least not in the GCL.
Hard to think of a more brutal end to a season than a wild pitch.

Hard to think of a more brutal end to a season than a wild pitch. Believe that is correct as DesignatedForAssignment noted the same earlier. Seems like a strange outlier. Once saw an automatic runner score the winning running on a strike three passed ball with two outs! But ending a season like that? Ouch.

The bad drafts have hurt them .As they haven't been able to replenish the graduations and trade aways. Hopefully the recent draftees and ifas change that.

Chavis now at .636 at Pawtucket. Not too shabby. September call up possibility. Not likely due to his playoff ineligibty and not being on the 40 man. It is still encouraging for him to be doing so well after the suspension. There was some fear he wouldn just go back to his struggling early years without the peds.

I don't think the "bad drafts" thing holds anymore. Have they had a bad draft since 2013? You could argue 2015 was weak after Benintendi, but they cut deeply into it by giving up picks to sign Ramirez and Sandoval (ostensibly to help the major league club), but even after that Lakins and Poyner look like contributors. You can't gut your draft pool and then blame the drafting. And the "after Benintendi" would do a lot of lifting in that opinion anyway, since either he or Bregman is the best player in that draft--getting him was way more important than getting a marginally better player in, say, the fourth round. Jury is still out on 2016, but I'd be surprised if fewer than four of the top six play in the majors, and all six have a realistic shot at getting there. They aren't graduating dudes because players near graduation like Kopech, Allen, Shaun Anderson, Dubon, etc. were traded to help the major league club, but that certainly doesn't make the drafts themselves bad. The fact they made draft picks good enough to be flipped for current major league help is why the team is about to win over 100 games.

I’m pretty enthusiastic about the system, all things considered. The top 20 has some guys who look like they might be impact players (Chavis, Catham, Houck, Lakins), guys who have high upside (Dalbec, Mata, Groome, Ockimey), and younger guys who will be cool to watch, including Casas.
But there is some depth, too... I am intrigued by power arms outside the top 40, esp. Montero and Schellenger (even Maddox). These guys could rise fast.
To have gotten so much out of the system in the last few years and still have legitimately promising guys? Not bad.

I went to the opener of the Lowell series in Norwich yesterday. The first order of business was to try to get any updates on the injury status of Montero and Dearden who hadn't played since the 18th. I went behind the Spinners dugout where 5 players were leaning over the rail before the game but was a little embarrassed that I didn't know any of them. The Connecticut scorecard doesn't list the players so I was reduced to "Hey guys". One turned around and I asked how Tyler was. "Tyler who?" I was asked. Tyler Dearden. Then one of the 5 said he was Tyler. (Next year I will remember to print the roster before I go) Tyler said it was a back injury that sidelined him but that he was feeling better. I asked if he would play again this year and he said that was the teams decision. I told him he was having a great year and proceeded to the bullpen.
This was a longer yell but again a player was gracious enough to turn around and answer my question about Montero. He said he would not pitch again this year but had begun throwing again so we can hope the one month rest will take care of whatever the issue was. He was dominating in his last outing on July 6 in Norwich.

As you can tell from the box score, it was a tough outing for Ward. His fastball topped out at 90 today (sitting behind the radar guns again). Everything that could go wrong for him did. The rally started with a hard grounder off his glove that went for an infield single. After a two out two run double by Reyes, Warner reached on an error by Batesole. Nunez drew an 8 pitch walk mounting the pitch count. Bojarski then hit a fly to left that seemed to hang up for a while, however, Esplin did not come close to catching it, then was removed after the inning. That would be Ward's 33rd and last pitch but not the end of the inning. Haworth struck out King on a change in the dirt that went through Marrero's legs allowing King to reach. Brinkman followed with a grounder to second off Williams glove that was scored a hit and followed by Burk's run scoring single.

Haworth is an interesting pitcher. Although his fastball can reach 93, he throws more change ups that any other pitch as is not afraid to throw several in a row. After a lead off single in the third he retired 12 in a row, 4 swinging. He started the 7th walking the first two batters who would come around to score after he was removed. The change was usually 84 with good downward movement.
In the fourth, Ganns got a 3-1 fastball down and in and lined it over the right field fence. In the ninth, after hitting a foul home run, Granberg lined a double to right-center that landed near the warning track. Thanks, Gabriel.
