Hey fans - remember when we were jumping for joy with a 6.5 game lead over the MFYs? How expectations can change.
Well - 133 games in the can, 29 to go....91 wins.
I like where we are.

If we have too we will take care of the Yankees ourselves. That’s how we built the lead anyway. I rather be the team up 6.5 games.

This was a pretty classic gameday thread experience. To be fair I had colonoscopies that were more fun than last night's game.

We'll I'm so glad we didn't get a bullpen arm, because no one was as good as the guys we had! Might have been the case had we kept Buttrey, he's off to a hot start in Anaheim. Ok maybe he wasn't the best option, but I think the organization is going to regret not seeing what he had to offer at the mlb level prior to trading him. They intentionally skipped over him several times in lieu of bringing other righties up to the major league team. If that's not a clear indication of what they thought of him, I don't know what is. You don't need to see a player at the MLB level to evaluate him if, to put it bluntly, you don't think he's good. Now, that's not to say that evaluation was correct--I'm just pushing back on the idea that he wasn't evaluated thoroughly.

Do teams really get swayed by small major league samples?

I am optimistic that Kinsler is going to end up being very valuable as a Red Sock. Granted he hasn't yet other than improved D but he has a bat with a history and it is a solid history. If you had a need at 2nd and could fill that need with Pedey for a few months what would it be worth?

If you had a need at 2nd and could fill that need with Pedey for a few months what would it be worth? You're absolutely right and I have been a fan of Kinsler throughout his career. It's just that these mid-season trades are a bit of a crap shoot in general, you almost always overpay, and asking a guy to go to a new team and perform at peak level from day one is unrealistic for most players. If we picked up Machcado then we should expect the world, but these mid-level guys seem to be just as risky as they prospects they're traded for. Maybe Kinsler is this year's Dave Roberts and I finally stop talking about what's his name, but there is a lot of room for second guessing on this one and with Buttrey pitching well so far it's somewhat reasonable for the second guessing to start already. Everything you say is true yet those deals still need to be made regardless if they are a bit of a crapshoot. They do it in hockey and basketball also. When the other contenders make trades to improve their chances of winning you have to try and keep pace. I like the deals DD has made and think they will bear fruit in the end.

If we had a good defensive 1b there would be zero runs this inning

With the type of pretty swing Benny has, he just seems to be squaring up very few balls....a ton of rolling over easy grounders. Tired? Worn down?
