9/7-9/9 Red Sox vs. Astros Series Thread
|
Post by redsox04071318champs on Sept 10, 2018 0:09:02 GMT -5
That series definitely felt like a "measuring stick" kind of series. I think that Houston is clearly the team to beat.
The Red Sox bullpen was pretty lousy. Brasier, Hembree, and Kelly were not good this series, although Brasier did get his man today. The Sox let two leads slip. They were able to win tonight, though because Wright got in and out of trouble and Kimbrel finally had a clean inning. I would have been very frightened for the Sox if the game had gone extra innings.
Fortunately, Moreland had a dying quail fall in (Of course had Gonzlez had dove, he might have caught the ball) - sometimes loopers are just as good as liners.
Betts and Bogaerts were awesome in the series and Beintendi is hitting the ball better. Bogaerts has been so good this year.
Nice to see JDM finally hit one out - his HR pace has slowed a lot, but 40 is one helluva accomplishment. It should have been a shot to put the game away.
I was hoping Devers would play well enough to re-claim 3b. So far, not so good. I would hope that Vazquez doesn't make the post-season roster. I hope Eovaldi starts pitching better and takes to the bullpen. They'll need him. And Wright is an important guy out there, too. I hope Kelly doesn't make the pen, but I suspect he does.
All I can say is that I hope Cleveland moves Houston out of the way. I think they're the best team in baseball, talentwise. I can see why their run differential is even better than the Sox. I think Giles in that closer role played a huge part in why they underachieved recordwise. They sold their souls to get Osuna, which was quite disgusting but on the field it makes for a much better team.
The rest will depend upon how healthy Altuve, Correa, and Springer get. Their bullpen is a lot better and I think their rotation is probably even better although a Chris Sale at the top of his game would go a long way to mitigate that.
The Astros really scare me. Meanwhile the Sox have won their 98th game - same as 2004 - the most I've ever seen them win and they've clinched a .600 plus season. And 2004 was the only other season I saw that (at least since 1980).

Red Sox are 6 of 30 with RISP in this series with 25 LOB. I really hope we get a shot at these guys in the playoffs, they've been way too lucky in the season series against us. They'll run out of luck at some point.

We just got Houston at there best. Same with Cleveland earlier. I think Cora expiremented a little bit. I was surprised he went with Brian Johnson. I felt we blew Friday’s game. But that’s a good thing to see these teams now.
It would be a shame to lose a game after Sale pitches a monster game. Looks like we will have home field. Also Houston and Cleveland will battle each other . You know we were a base hit from breaking Fridays game open. We left a lot on base Saturday. It should be fun playoff baseball

They'll run out of luck at some point. If anything the Astros have been pretty unlucky most of the year. Their run differential is even better than the Sox' run differential. This is a great team - not unbeatable, though, but great with better pitching. The Sox pitching, particularly the bullpen, would need to do a better job. I wouldn't want to rely on being road warriors to beat Houston who has been vulnerable at home for whatever reason.

We got what we needed, especially given the Mariners were able to take one against the Yankees, finally. Just need to bank some wins vs the Jays and Mets and we'll be fine. If we had swept Houston, we could've given Oakland a good shot at taking the division but thats a tall order against a good team.
I get that giving the everyday players days off is nice but they have been given lots of rest already and the sooner we clinch the more we can rest our pitching staff...

WOW. Unbelieveable! Playoff baseball. Gotta love it though it sure brings on acid indigestion! Don't eat tomatoes for a week!😉

Jim Ed must be excited to know that, if the Sox add a game to their lead this week, they will clinch in Yankee Stadium by winning that series ... very possible.

Jim Ed must be excited to know that, if the Sox adds a game to their lead this week, that they clinch in Yankee Stadium by winning that series ... very possible. Unfortunately the Yanks play the roll-over Twins while we have the Blue Jays. Over the weekend, the Yankees play Toronto while we’re set to face at least one of, if not both, Syndergaard and DeGrom, which, while fun matchups, should be tough games. Another note on the Twins: Since Aug 23, they’ve lost series to OAK (1-3), CLE (1-2), TEX (1-2), and HOU (0-3), before finally winning one against KC (2-1) on a walkoff HR.

I think the Sox will wrap up the division in Cleveland. As somebody who enjoys watching all the post-game hype from the champagne party and all of the interview and analysis from NESN, MLB network, CSNE or whatever they call themselves these days, etc, I'm probably not going to be able to watch them the weekend they're playing Cleveland or their last night in NY, so I think it'll be then they clinch. I'd love to see them clinch at New York on either the 18th or 19th, but the magic number would have to come down daily by more than 1, which is hard to see with the Yanks playing the schedule they're playing. The Sox will whittle it down with their victories, too, but I don't think it will happen as quickly as I hope.

I agree, hard to complain about clinching the division with plenty of time to rest up and line everyone up before the playoffs but clinching the division in Yankee Stadium would definitely be the cherry on top.

That win last night was pretty huge imo. Kimbrel looked great, and to pull out that game sort of felt like a turning point for them mentally. Idk maybe I'm projecting my own feelings

Mine as well and I am sure many fans but I doubt the players feel that way. Yes they feel like it is a good victory but we are talking about a team that hasn't lost 4 straight all season. I doubt they let losing a few close games get to them in any way.

Idk maybe I'm projecting my own feelings I think that's more due to our own insecurity as fans. They have won 98 games, they probably don't need a turning point.

Playoff baseball? Not really. We missed Verlander and we really don't know about Sale. Houston is running on 8 cylinders, the Sox are running on 7 at this point in time.

Excellent win. Houston is not better than our guys. We will have to battle for the top prize......as it should be.
I love our chances.

ARod's line of the night: The Red Sox will go as far into the post season as Rick Porcello takes them.

Not that it's ultimately going to matter, but do the Twins EVER beat the Yankees? They even gave the Yankees Aaron Hicks for nothing.
