Loving the way the game has turned, of course. Was watching Netflix series Alias Grace (Margaret Atwood) until 930 - wife went to bed and I switched to the Roku/TV combo of mlb.com JUST in time to see the Holt bomb. MFY getting hammered. Magic number in single digits after tonight if things continue to go our way. And of course anxiously awaiting the 11 PM tropical update... Manfred whispers: Alias Grace is good. Ahem... How ‘bout them Sox!

This should be pretty Kimbrel proof by now. I want him throwing nothing but curveballs.

Amazing what O'Brien just said - we are soon to have 50 home and 50 road wins. NEVER been done before by a Red Sox team.
And we are the first team to clinch a playoff spot

Time to get ready for Cleveland. That is going to be an interesting playoff series. Is it too soon to start a separate thread??

It doesn't look like it because the score ended up pretty nice, but a huge out by Kelly there. Kelly is nothing else was always a great dude and a legendary teammate, I hope he finds a killer secondary pitch that makes him a legit closer.

Four games ago I noted that the Sox in their last 9 games had scored 42 runs from the 7th inning on, in 25.1 innings, for a RS/9 of 14.92. Quite the discovery.
Obviously this was not sustainable, and in fact in the four games since they have only scored 10 runs in 10.2 innings from the 7th on, reducing their RS/9 since August 28th to a much less ridiculous number, 13.00. Clearly bad luck for the opposition.

I don't at all get a sense that Cora will let the team atrophy into the playoffs like Farrell did the last two years. Cora seems to have a pretty skillful way of handling players, getting as many as possible at bats and innings - but this is a team that clearly LOVES to win. The playoffs will be truly epic this year.

These late game surges by the Sox offense are positively bizarre in the context of the seemingly constant inability to do anything early in games.
Great game by Cora. Old school NL style bullpen management.

Sonny Gray is the gift that keeps on giving. Remember when a lot of us on this site was willing to give up a good package of prospects for him?

Sonny Gray is the gift that keeps on giving. Remember when this whole board wanted him. We wanted him so badly No, it was probably split. I didn't want him at any price being offered because I knew he'd add 2 runs to his ERA just by moving from Oakland to the AL East. I really don't think the park factors are correct for advanced pitching stats. They also don't adjust for division and as we all know the AL East is much harder to pitch in than the AL West.

He reminded me of Lincecum: an undersized guy who burns out quickly. Now... that may actually have been wrong, since his velocity has been ok. But he’s definitely gone sideways.

Still possible to clinch the division in Yankee Stadium if we have a good week.
