They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

Just a reminder to all that, as strange as it seems, TODAY'S GAME IS AT 1 PM.
Happy Erev Yom Kippur!

Looking at the weather forecast, seems much more likely the game is at 5 or 6PM. Wonder why they scheduled it for 1?? Kinda odd for a non-getaway weekday game.

The Yom Kippur thing wan't a gag- it starts at sundown, and New York City obviously has a very large Jewish community. Nice move by MLB to honor that, unfortunate that the weather isn't cooperating.

Thanks for filling my glaring pit of ignorance. Or at least pointing out that I should read ericmvan's posts more closely, even when they don't contain analytics...

Just win one game this series, preferably today's, and I don't care what happens the rest of the series as long as the Sox stay healthy.
Don't know if they'll get the game in today, though.
What I like about the rain at Yankee Stadium is that the weather sucks the life out of the Toilet and there are less fans and they're less vocal and it feels less like they're in hostile territory.
Go win the division Sox. Clinch it the right way - at the Toilet. Make this the first of two champagne celebrations at The Toilet!

Today should be the best day of my life when my son is born, but if the Sox clinch today as well that will just be the cherry on top.

I'm always reminded that the first day home of my eldest daughter's birth, we watched Papelbon get a win in game 2 against the Angels in 2008. I watched the entire game standing up and rocking her in front of the TV. It should be noted that we didn't rename her Jonathan.

Perfect. I'll bet there's a lot of Sox fans in the stands. I hope they're very vocal. MFY's are going to love that 6 hour trip to Oakland.

Never thought that this series would be anticlimactic, as far as the division. Just want the guys to continue playing good ball as we head into the playoffs. Congratulations......greatscottcooper.

With the wet weather tonight in NYC, Cora should run his B squad and certainly shouldn't play Mookie.

Imagine how much this sucks for the observant Jews who were delighted to buy tickets originally.
Three classes of reactions.
1) The really observant ones are on the phone now to their gentile friends.
2) Some of the less observant ones are doing a quintessentially Jewish thing and devising a rationalization for why they should attend the game instead of shul. Hey, they'll spend all day at shul tomorrow and end up hearing all the same prayers anyway! (I have no idea if that's true, but neither would these guys. I'm pretty sure Kol Nidre is repeated.)
3) Some of the latter may well have high holiday tickets to sell or give away! Which sets up this story to explain...
The last time I went to temple for Erev Yom Kippur, it was because my fiance was in the process of converting. And my mother had scored us two coveted tickets for the services that were outside under a huge set of tents in the temple parking lot, as opposed to the services run inside by the Assistant Rabbi. I think any temple with an eminent Rabbi does something like this.
And we were looking forward to it, because the # 1 Rabbi, who'd be giving the sermon, was Harold Kushner. When Bad Things Happen to Good People Harold Kushner. The best-selling and best-known Rabbi in the world. Who had officiated at my Bar Mitzvah his first year as a Rabbi, and who would be officiating at our wedding, and who we would be meeting with to discuss the term paper we had to write together for conversion class. (The Jewish partner had to attend those classes to re-learn the things they'd forgotten from Hebrew School and the things they didn't teach kids.)
I had taped the game and left the VCR running when we left our place to have dinner at my Mom's. The expectation was that we'd watch the end of the game after dinner (while checking on it periodically throughout), but just in case it went into extras, I had the deck on the 6-hour setting. Smart move!
My Dad and his Uncle Frank were still kibbitzing in the dining room after dinner when I went into his bedroom to dutifully watch the Sox get eliminated. When Baylor homered, I came back into the dining room and they were so wrapped up talking that I couldn't interrupt them for what seemed like an eternity. I finally just blurted out, "Excuse me, Baylor just homered and it's now 5 to 3!"
We all went into the den and saw Hendu do his thing. At which point we had to leave to go to Temple!
Anita and I listened to the bottom of the 9th on the drive. [1]
At some point during the services, I heard a voice from the parking lot behind us quietly shout "Yes!" (as in, they coudn't help themselves but were trying not to bother the rest of us.) I leaned over to Anita and said "I think we might have just won." And then there was the radio as soon as we got in the car on the way home; they were talking like we had won, but it took a good minute before they made that explicit. I watched everything I had missed as soon as we got home, of course.
So there is precedence for great things happening for the Sox on Yom Kippur Eve! Let's do it again, OK?
[1] It's not often noted that Gene Mauch probably handed us the pennant by not pinch-hitting that inning. The only Sox pitcher tougher on righties that year than Steve Crawford was Roger, and lefties had destroyed him. Mauch had Jack Howell to hit for DeCinces, so he passed up an .840 vs.1.041 OPS matchup in favor of .759 vs. .576. If that didn't win the game (and all they needed was a sac fly deeper than the one DeCinces ended up hitting), he had Jerry Narron to hit for Grich, although that's less obvious.

Scored last-minute ticket to the game. Looks like the rain will clear out in time.
