Sorry philbosox, Williams was not a better defensive outfielder than Benny or even Rice. He was all stick.....an indifferent fielder. Jensen and Piersall were outstanding for their era. I think our current OF is the best followed by Lynn, Rice and Evans. Benny is better than Rice. Today's players are more athletic/skilled as fielders INF and OF...just the fact Jack. We definitely have different memories of Williams. I recall a Williams that was always in the right place for taking balls off the wall and turning a double into a single. If ypu think he was indifferent to any part of his game, you weren't watching very close. I also think you seriously overvalue Lynn's defense. As far as the athleticism factor, most debates compare to their contemporaries. It's not a factor. The Boston outfield was also significantly more difficult in all three fields. Left had the ladders on the monster, center had the triangle and flagpole and right didn't have all the padding that prevents ring around triples. Boy, nobody watched the Sox more closely than I did...even if we were then two days TV/week.😊 It is true that Ted, and any Sox left fielder after, was credited with an almost mystic ability for knowing the dents in and bounces from the wall...holding possible doubles to singles. Sure they played the wall better than a visiting player if only because half the games were there. Ted was not particularly fast. I don't recall Ted making diving catches and he had an average arm. I saw him drop a routine fly that he was camped under. I dont recall any credible description of Ted as an outstanding OFder....but I reserve the right to be corrected. I do remember John Updike giving Ted no more than a passing fielding grade...sometimes practicing his swing while in the field. You are absolutely right about the flag pole in left center, the lack of padding and, of course the left field ladder....from which no one could predict a bounce. I think I said Lynn was a glider...smoothly loping in the field....as often described by Martin & Woods. I said I believed JBJ was the better fielder. I didn't comment beyond that. I also agree that players need be compared with their contemporaries in any assessment. Nevertheless, today's players perform physical marvels.

"March came in like a nightmare for Ted Williams and the Boston Red Sox yesterday when baseball’s highest salaried star broke his left collarbone while trying to make a shoestring catch of a sinking line drive during practice at Payne Park.
He had returned the previous year from Korea as a flying Marine captain where he had a close call when his jet plane was damaged in action and crashed in flames." ' ' ' In 1950, Williams was playing in his eighth All-Star Game. In the first inning, Williams caught a line drive by Ralph Kiner, slamming into the Comiskey Park scoreboard and breaking his left arm.. . . Yeah he pretty much mailed it in.

Those are comments on errors and as one of the posters said, his fielding percent was in line with fielding percents of the era. I don't disagree about speed he wasn't fast but he was faster than Rice. I disagree about arm, I recall a decent arm. We definitely disagree about his ability to play the wall. That's something I think is Benny's biggest fault. Last game we saw him misjudge the bounce into a run where there should have been runners on 2nd and 3rd. He does that often. Rice was OK on the wall but not as good as Ted or Yaz for that matter. Maybe three weeks ago, I saw a first for me, a triple on a ball that hit the monster. You see that a lot ?

Pretty good start to the game.
Some EVs so far: Mookie 99, JDM 103, Xander 108, Devers 107

Devers going the other way with authority is a beautiful thing tbh.

Wow that was an atrocious pitch, rest Price today.

Price is not inspiring confidence in me. I'd honestly prefer him out of the bullpen and E-Rod starting, but I know that will never happen..

Nice bounce back price! Everyone can come off the ledge now He's pitching against the Orioles' AAA lineup and was very lucky to get out of that inning. He's not looking good this afternoon at all so far.

Meaningless but, I'd like to see Mookie with 30 SB, Devers with 20 HR & Xander with 100 RBI One down, two to go

Watching GameDay from my work desk, I'm concerned by David's pitching performance on 111 loss Baltimore team. He gave up 3 walks & 2 HR in 2 inning of work. I don't think he's ready for playoffs with his mental like that. Where is his old domination form? He gave up too many HR & walk in his last 2 rough outings. I think Cora will pull him out early if he continues poor in this game.

The ball is carrying to LF which is something that just about never happens in Fenway anymore since they built the upper deck behind home plate.
The box score lists the wind as 20 mph out to LF.
