I forgot how quickly Miley works. There's an aesthetic pleasure to a guy like that. It would be nice to face him. I’d like quicker games. None of this Astro, two minutes between pitches, nonsense.

Can someone with a little better scouting eye than myself tell me how competent Travis Shaw is at 2B? He played 37 games there this year and still had 1.0 dWAR. Were we really this far off with his defensive profile that he actually has the range to play an ok 2B? Or is this a case of shoving a square peg into a round hole to keep his bat in the lineup?

I’d totally be rooting for a team like the Brewers if weren’t in it. But here we are, and I’ll be hoping for a decisive 4 game sweep.

Here's some homework. Find out how often he played in games with a heavy pattern of infield shifts. The game has changed dramatically and the coverage area for second base has changed along with it. How good he was will be greatly affected by whether he had to cover 15' on either side of his glove or 10'. That could mask a lot of stuff.

Big 3 run homerun by the Dodgers. 4 run lead.
Looks like the Sox are getting LA.

Looks like the last time we played the Dodgers was in 2016 - three game series - Mookie, Xander, JBJ, Benny among others in the line up. Of course, it means nothing - kind of fun to look back at the box scores. LA is a completely different team (but they had Jansen as their closer back then too).

Here we go. Time to beat Kershaw and avoid Jansen.
Hopefully JD Martinez can give everyone of the hitters a good idea what to look for when he was with the DBacks last year.

First look at our match ups (key and some back ups, not all players). Will be a really interesting series....and this is for Fenway games. What Cora does in the field in LA remains to be seen of course.
C - Grandal/Barnes vs Vazquez/Leon 1st - Muncy vs Moreland/Pearce 2nd - Dozier vs Kinsler/Holt 3rd - Turner vs Devers/Nunez SS - Machado vs Bogaerts LF - Pederson vs Benintendi CF - Bellinger vs Bradley RF - Puig vs Betts DH - not sure vs Martinez
Starters Kershaw, Ryu, Hill, Buehler vs Sale, Price, Porcello, Eovaldi Closer - Jansen vs Kimbrel
Manager - Roberts vs Cora

Matt Kemp would most likely be the DH.

The Red Sox aren't catching any breaks here.
I was hoping Milwaukee would knock off LA. That bullpen for Milwaukee had to be worn out and Jeffress was struggling.
Instead the Sox have to deal with LH pitching (hello Nunez and Kinsler), a big ballpark in LA. I do worry that the bats will cool off and the Sox will have to pitch their way to victory - for that they need Sale and Price at their best and Eovaldi to keep doing what he's doing, and the misadventure of Kimbrel has to stop and hopefully the rest will help out Barnes and Brasier and they can continue to do what they've done. I also hope we see Wright back, although I have a feeling he won't make the roster - totally reading between the lines, but in listening to Cora's voice when he was asked the question, I'd have a feeling (meaningless) that he won't.
As I mentioned before the Dodgers have a lot of good offensive options for their lineup. We'll probably see Hernandez in LF and Pederson on the bench with Sale and Price starting. We'll probably see Kemp at DH, which is his appropriate position at this point. Machado and Turner are tough guys to get out. The Dodgers are better than I think people may realize.
They were a mess in May when they were 10 under, a lot of injuries, but they're healthy now and have been more than 30 games over since then, which is well over .600 ball.
Certainly not saying the Sox can't beat LA. Just saying I don't think it's as slam dunk/automatic as others in the media are saying. I think the Brewers would have been slam dunk, but not LA. They're better and an extremely legit threat to win the Series. I anticipate the Sox will have their hands full. I hope Kershaw doesn't dominate and that Sale can.

Kershaw in the postseason has previously pitched in relief and then started a game just once. He got the last two outs of the 2016 DS against the Nats on 1 day rest and then started game 2 of the CS on 4 days rest from his previous start, and was brilliant. It's possible that pitching in between made hm better, but he's generally been terrific with 4 days rest in the post-season.
His game 1 start against us will be something brand new: a start on 5 days rest but with a relief inning midway. They may have done that on purpose, because he's had 6 post-season starts on 5 days rest and allowed a 4.71 ERA even adjusting for the world's worst inherited runner support. It's for real because his adjusted ERA in his 4 starts with 6+ rest is 8.32. All other numbers rise correspondingly (full breakdown once they start the thread).

First look at our match ups (key and some back ups, not all players). Will be a really interesting series....and this is for Fenway games. What Cora does in the field in LA remains to be seen of course. C - Grandal/Barnes vs Vazquez/Leon 1st - Muncy vs Moreland/Pearce 2nd - Dozier vs Kinsler/Holt 3rd - Turner vs Devers/Nunez SS - Machado vs Bogaerts LF - Pederson vs Benintendi CF - Bellinger vs Bradley RF - Puig vs Betts DH - not sure vs Martinez Starters Kershaw, Ryu, Hill, Buehler vs Sale, Price, Porcello, Eovaldi Closer - Jansen vs Kimbrel Manager - Roberts vs Cora What they've actually been doing ... and we'll see their LHP platoon (Taylor and Freese, no Pederson) in games 1 and 2.
I'm pretty sure they'll go Kershw, Hill, Buehler, Ryu. Ryu is better at home, and has a reverse split and has never pitched at Fenway, a disaster recipe. Hill has great numbers in 27 IP in Fenway (mostly in relief).
C - Grandal/Barnes or vice versa? vs Vazquez/Leon. Grandal was so bad he lost his job as starter ... temporarily or not? 1st - Muncy /Freese vs Moreland/Pearce 2nd - Hernandez?/Dozier? vs Holt/Kinsler (*) 3rd - Turner vs Devers/Nunez SS - Machado vs Bogaerts LF - Pederson/ Taylor vs Benintendi/ Martinez (LA)CF - Bellinger vs Bradley RF - Puig vs Betts DH - Kemp vs Martinez. DH in a game 7 could be someone else.
(*) Hernandez and Dozier platooned in September, but Dozier struggled so much (.089 / .188 / .196 in 64 PA from 8/29 on) that Hernandez started the post-season full-time there. He homered in his first game and then went 2 for 23, 4 BB, 0 XBH, losing both sides of the platoon, first to Dozier and Muncy twice vs. LHP, then to Taylor vs. RHP in game 7. I'm guessing they may try Dozier's Fenway swing vs. Sale and Price. Muncy at 2B is predicated on the opposing LHSP not going deep in the game, so I don't think they try it against Sale and Price, especially in game 1 with Kershaw on the mound inducing grounders.
Bellinger also got benched (vs. LHP) midway through the post-season. That's three positions where they had to do that.

I attended game 1 of that series in Dodger Stadium. Great atmosphere. Steven Wright pitched one of the best games of his career for the win. Sandy Leon (this was back when he could hit, at least some) had a home run. That was also the series where Wright was injured while pinch running.
