Cafardo brought up the point that I had already thought about. Do you want Mookie at 2B when Machado is running the bases? I don't want him at 2b because I think Holt or Kinsler can do the job well enough. I hope it isn't because Machado has them intmidated if Cora thinks playing Mookie is the best alternative.

Take a look at Mo Vaugh's 1995 season in which his slash was .300/.388/.575/.963 with 28 doubles, 3 triples, 39 home runs and 126 RBI's. That's the potential you'd be losing by not playing Pearce vs lefties. Instead Pearce would have about 45+ doubles with only 25 home runs but overall the OPS numbers only off by .004. That's the type of potential production you potentially lose by not playing Pearce. I've read & listened to enough arguments against JD not playing 1B, starting Mookie at 2B and all the other scenarios & I am not convinced. I think the best team to put on the field to start the game in L.A. is JD at 1B & a platoon of Devers/Nunez at 3B & a platoon of Holt/Kipnis at 2B vs SP RHP/LHP. Pearce & Moreland and who ever is not starting at 2B & 3B along with Swihart/Vazquez ( I think Leon should start) makes for a great bench to use in a NL Park. Benintendi, JBJ & Mookie should play every inning of every game in the Outfield. And no I'm not trolling you. I believe J.D. is a great athlete and Baseball PLAYER & can play 1B. Whoa!!!!!!!! What made you think anything about trolling? I didn't get a whiff of any of that. The posts have been really good here. No trolling. It's okay we can disagree my friend. IMO Pearce's bat is too huge vs lefties to take him out of the lineup. As a baseball player vs lefties I think Pearce has shown this year that he's pretty awesome. I think it's important a guy with his effectiveness gets more than 1 at bat vs lefties. And his defense of picking off balls in the dirt has been good too. And I just don't think playing 1b is that easy that JD can pick it up.

What are you going to do with JDM? He'd be in left, in place of Benintendi. I like the idea of leaving Betts in RF. He's quick to the ball and has an arm that should stop any thoughts of runners going first to third and having runners at the corners. I think they would go first to third on JD. It will be interesting to see what happens at home and then which way Cora goes once they get to LA.

JDM at 1B in game three versus Buehler is merely risky and seemingly-ill-advised, not idiotic. You improve the offense, Benintendi over Moreland, and you improve the LF defense, Benintendi over JDM. How big is the 1B defensive downgrade? Big enough to be more than offsetting? You'd certainly think so.
JDM has two professional games at 1B, both in 2009, one on on July 11 in the advanced-rookie Appalachian league, and one on August 30 for TriCity of the NYPL.
It's possible he's been working out all year at 1B for just this possibility and both Nick Cafardo and Peter Abraham have missed it. Just like they missed both of the changes Brock Holt made. Thanks for your hard work, guys!
In games 4 and 5, they're facing Rich Hill and Clayton Kershaw. You've still got the OF defensive upgrade and the (almost certainly larger) 1B defensive downgrade, but you have also downgraded the offense by playing Benintendi (96 wRC+ career vs. LHP on the road) instead of Pearce (129 career, 165 the last three seasons). That makes less than zero sense.
Note that Ryu is starting games 2 and 6 in Fenway. I think Dave Roberts handed us a gift with that one, but I admit that I'm not looking at the numbers (Ryu's home / road split) as deeply as I might .

Do you really think JD Martinez has any idea how to scoop throws. It takes experience to play 1b or at least a lot of spring training. You don't foolishly put a guy at a position he hasn't played like ever and use the World Series as a time to experiment. All it takes is one throw that he can't scoop that just about any other experienced 1b would get and that could cost you runs you can't afford to give up. You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I think that opinion is way out there and a really, really bad idea.
