Padres' Espinoza should be fully recovered this season; hopefully he'll regain his elite status again. Was really high on him when Sox had him, and hoping he makes it back. Padres really have a full house.

Josh Harrison to the tigers on a very modest deal. Wish we had him instead on Nunez for that role.

Yet despite all that Manny is revered and loved in Boston and talked about fondly. Hell I'm guilty when it comes to that. I enjoyed watching him hit and had laughs at some of his comical defense I don't get why he's revered especially though. Manny Ramirez would be the last guy I revered on those championship teams. The Sox lost to the Rays in Game 7 of the ALCS. Two of those losses were decided by 2 runs or less. I'm still convinced that team gets by with Manny at the plate. Like with what James was saying with the HOF talk when it came to Schilling, if Manny got in the HOF, I wouldn't care at all (he's not going to get in, but still). The worst thing you can do to your teamates in sports is give up on them when everyone else is trying to win. He had good teamates in Cora, Lowell, Ortiz (his perceived best buddy). He was making really good money. Like sorry Manny that you signed a really good deal for you at the time and a good deal for the team later in the deal. Where did all that behavior get him? A extra year at 5 million per year? Sorry doesn't cut it for me. As for Manny Machado, I think we are all being hypocritical as Sox fans for bashing this deal. Like we are the the LAST PEOPLE to think the Padres can't win or develop players with a a-hole on your team, as evidenced by Manny Ramirez. It's like Yankee fans complaining about the Sox payroll last year for being the highest spending team after they were the biggest spenders in baseball for 2 decades almost. I get it, but I think a lot of it comes down to Manny Ramirez was our guy so rah-rah. Manny Machado injured our guy with a dirty slide so he's trash. The difference is that Machado had intent to injure while Ramirez didn't hurt any other player physically. Yet Pedro almost hit Karim Garcia in the head in a fit of anger, which could have hurt. He also sent Jeter and Soriano to the hospital. In our eyes, Pedro is a god, not a punk. Once upon a time Hal McRae of the Royals knocked Willie Randolph into CF with a hellacious slide that was intended to injure/break up a DP. Because Randolph was a Yankee, I'm sure we'd love it. Those Royals/Yankees and Sox/Yankees had battles, meant to injure. At the end of the day short of murder, laundry is what colors a lot of perceptions.

It's hard to compare eras where you were allowed to police behavior with retaliation to today, when the retaliation is punished and the original incident almost never is. Machado knew the league was going to do nothing and they didn't on at least a dozen separate occasions. If there is anyone who deserves to be punished by his peers, it's Machado, because the league does NOTHING to stop him, even when there is supposedly zero tolerance on dirty slides at 2nd. And then there's the bat throwing and the helmet throwing. This goes back to my main gripe with baseball. If you have a zero tolerance policy on retaliation, you also must have a zero tolerance policy on the incidents that lead to retaliation, such as an attempt to injure even when it fails. I'm not sure why the league lets this go on.

It has been denied by the Padres yesterday and they say they bowed out of Harper, but Heyman keeps finding sources saying they are in. Probably Boras, but who knows?

There was that rumor that surfaced last night that Bryce would give the Padres a chance to match an offer. That would be the stupidest thing I've ever seen. It could have made sense for the Phillies, heck even White Sox teams that can afford 200 million dollar payrolls. Yet the Padres will struggle to afford 150 million payrolls long-term. Heck that can only happen with a good size increase in revenue. You'd have three players making over 50% of the teams payroll even at that level. Heck if they got stuck in that 120 to 130 million range it'd be even worse.

Marwin Gonzalez to the Twins for 2/$21M
If they sign Keuchel, they could overtake the Indians.

Wow that's a bad deal for Gonzalez. In context not so bad. On the Twins it’s the second highest annual. salary after Cruz, and the 6th highest total contract, and as a utility player. On the Sox, the 30 year old would make much more than our own Brockstar (3.58M), Nunez (4.5M), Pearce (6.25M), Swihart (910K), Leon (2.48M) among utility snd bench players. Among Sox starters he will earn more than Vasquez (4.2), MM (6.5M), JBJ (8.55M) as well as Beni and Devers, and about the same as Xander. Only Pedey, Mookie and JDM among position players will make more. In 2018 this fine player fielded several positions well while hitting 247/324/409/733 with 16HR. I would love him on the Sox, but he might not have gotten more than $11M AAV here either. I don’t think it’s a terrible contract except maybe in years.

The low amount of years is why the deal is bad for the player Gerry. Gonzalez is probably worth for 4 years, at the very least 3 years. He's a really good versatile (can literally play anywhere) player with some pop. That's hard to find.

Zobrist had 36 career fWAR at the time he signed his deal, including 11.9 in prior 3 seasons. Gonzalez has 7.8 fWAR in his career now including 5.9 in his prior 3 seasons. Hell Zobrist at ages 35-37 has had more fWAR than Gonzalez at ages 27-29. (last 3 seasons)

Phillies owner has been spotted flying to Vegas. I think we are about to see Harper go to where ever the Phillies play spring training on the flight return back.

As much as I agree that baseball's player compensation model is broken, I think people are getting out over their skis on some of the outrage here. Marwin Gonzalez is a versatile player who spiked a four WAR season once (on the strength of a career-high BABIP no less). At the time Zobrist signed with the Cubs, he had exceeded four WAR in five of his previous seven seasons. Zobrist got paid more because he was obviously a much better player. He was like twice as good as Gonzalez in 2018! What are we even talking about here?

He’s a fine player, with one very good year. Besides 2017, his career is very similar to Brock Holt. Is Brock Holt going to get a contract paying him over 10 million a year?

Jose Iglesias signed a minor league contract. Considering his defense and position, that seems a bigger injustice than the fact that Bryce Harper is still a free agent or that Marwin Gonzalez ONLY got 21 million.

Dude is 29 and coming off a 2-win season. Couldn't get a major league deal. This system is dumb.

The AAV was fine. 21 million dollars 2 years? That's the hang up here. Fine Zobrist was better 3 years ago. Salaries should be going up, not down with the increase in revenues through the years.

Gonzalez is a MUCH better player.

Not sure why bWAR doesn't like him. Probably because of their terrible DRS formula (not that UZR is much better).
