Reportedly the Mariners will be active this winter on the trade market. www.mlb.com/mariners/news/jerry-dipoto-mariners-wont-do-teardown/c-300348502/?tcid=podium_SEAShould Dombrowski be calling about any of the players? If Kimbrel turns down the QO how about; Alex Colomé He will be 30 in December, made $5.3m last year & is 1st year arbitration eligible. Given what Dipoto is quoted as saying in the article what would it take to get him? Dalbec? Are there others the Sox should pursue?

I don't want to trade for a reliever when there's like 6 different really good options on the free agent market this year.

Not saying I would do it, but Edwin Daiz is a guy I can see DD looking at if he has marching orders to get under in the next year or two.

You can hope, but DD won't nor should he plan on that. Guy has less than 25 innings in the minors and hasn't even pitched in AA. I'm a huge fan, but let's see him at AA and AAA. My main point being it won't stop him from maybe targeting Daiz if long-term money is an issue and free agent contracts go crazy. We'll just have to wait and see. A lot of people keep acting like its going to be easy to get a bunch of guys on one and two year deals and DD only goes after his guys. So if the one or two free agents he wants don't workout I can see a guy like Diaz being very high on DD list. That's how he works, he won't bargin shop or just settle for the next guy. So while I hate the idea of another big trade for a reliever, I believe its in play.

I don't believe Diaz is or will be available.
Dipoto indicated from the start of the offseason that his focus now involves building around his younger core of players -- such as Mitch Haniger, Edwin Diaz and Marco Gonzales.
That's why I ask about possibly getting Colome' as a Closer for Kimbrel if he refuses the QO.
I also do not want to see DD trade for a middle relief pitcher for a 3rd year in a row but, if the team needs a Closer, could Colome' be a good fit as a Closer in Boston?

they now need a catcher after the TB trade...Swihart plus a couple prospects to Seattle for Colome perhaps?

I don’t like trading for RPs I’m general but Swihart doesn’t really have a spot and looks like the odd man out. The M’s could play him every day and hope he turns into that all star level catcher we were hoping for.

Mike Leake
2019 31 yrs $16,000,000 $5M paid by St. Louis Cardinals 2020 32 yrs $15,000,000 $4M paid by St. Louis Cardinals 2021 33 yrs $18M Mutual Option, $5M Buyout
Dombrowski should trade for Leake. $11M per year for a #4/#5 who takes the ball every 5th day. Sale, Price, Porcello, E. Rod, Leake in 2019 sounds good & a lot cheaper then Eovaldi. Dipoto wants to shed salary & needs a Catcher to compete with Omar Narvarez.
Sandy Leon for Mike Leake
The Sox take on the last 2 years of Leake & all of the $27M owed with the buy out & Seattle gets Leon & his 2 years of arbitration eligibility.

I'd rather gamble on the upside of Eovaldi than settle for Leake, who isn't that good a pitcher. I think he'd struggle pitching at Fenway against AL East competition. I guess that could be a fallback option, but I honestly don't think Leake is worth the money. I'd look elsewhere.

He’d get smoked in the small AL East parks. I think they can get similar performance from their many internal options, beginning with Johnson, and including possibly (probably) Shawaryn, Hernandez, Houck or Mata before Leake’s contract is up. If they’re gonna drop $27M over two years I’d rather they do so (with another $2-3M AAV) for the first two years of Eovaldi. Or, hell, a 2/$30 for Charlie Morton.
