He might have been able to get 2 years elsewhere but signing as quickly as he did, I don't think he really cared. It's obvious the guy wanted to return to Boston. He said he did and he was being genuine. The Sox aren't trying to get under the luxury tax line in 2019 so his 1 year deal does nothing to harm that. Plus, perhaps you watched him last season? And I don't just mean the post-season? Perhaps you remember him jumpstarting the Red Sox in that first game against the Yankees in August when he slammed 3 homers? The guy played very well last season, excluding post-season, so let's talk post-season. I think he did ok? Did you think so? So what's the matter? The 6.25 million? Chris Young made more than that and I think Pearce contributed a helluva lot more. And you said he's a platoon player? Funny, but I didn't see to mind him getting ABs against righties. He certainly held his own. I think he's capable of handling 1b when Moreland goes into his 2nd half swoon, and then when Moreland snaps out of it, he can go back to platooning and he won't complain. And oh yeah, he's a great teammate who loves playing for the Sox? So what's the issue with him coming back for 6.25 million? I mean honestly that's a bargain and the fact that they didn't have to commit to 2020 and he was fine with it, what more could you want? |

I am just delighted about this. Great clubhouse guy, great bat, great person to keep with the team - intangibles will be important in addition to talent as we try to repeat.

Great deal. The higher price tag is more than worth it to get a one-year deal done. Now the Moreland/Pearce platoon is aligned through 2019. We’ll have some options at 1B after that.

He's also going to be 36 a few games into the season. This is certainly better than the 1 year $5 million deals they were throwing around a decade ago with guys like Smoltz, Brad Penny, or deals like Johnny Gomes, Mike Cameron or Chris Young. I'd give this deal a solid A- at least.

The Sox are paying close to 16-17 million AAV wise on their bench in 2019 if they keep Leon.
I like Pearce. Great guy. Good player when healthy for the most part.
What I like most about the deal is that Passan kind of revealed Dave's plan this offseason. Eovaldi is next it seems, which I love.

And with Moreland not being Big Papi, I wouldn't count on Pearce as just a bench player. I imagine that he'd get plenty of AB's. There's really very little downside imo. And one less thing to worry about. I'm surprised we got him for only $6.25M on a one year deal. I'd have easily thought it would be closer to $7-$8.

I guess I wonder what you think a guy who can hit .270 with a SA of about .450 and an OBP of about .350 in about 350 ABs is worth. And yeah I hope Eovaldi is next. Kimbrel is a goner so I would anticipate Eovaldi gets that money, and they'll need a high leverage relief arm. Perhaps it's a guy named Joe Kelly. Maybe they really did fix him. I've seen him have good stretches before but never saw him go 10 innings with a 13/0 K/BB ratio, so maybe they're on to something. Time will tell. It's not a big enough sample size to convince me, but it's more than enough to intrigue me given his stuff and that he is a fit for Boston. I would anticipate that Pearce, Evoaldi, and Kelly are the guys Dombrowski brings back. |

Pearce is a champion plain and simple and knows how to get the job done when it matters. Having guys that are willing to fit into the team and accept a role is worth more than you think. |

The more I think about it, the more I think the Red Sox got a huge discount here. According to fangraphs, he was worth $12.6 million last season, not even including the playoffs. I mean the bar for free agent signings is about $8M per WAR, so it shouldn't be that difficult for Pearce to reach about .8 WAR.
He's getting about the same exact amount he got last year. I hope they gave him a WS MVP incentive too.

Pardon the counting stats, but in 624 PA’s this year (459 for MM and 165 for Pearce) this platoon got 58 xbh via 31 doubles, 5 triples and 22 HR, and provided GG caliber defense at 1B, often preventing infielder throws and hard hit missils from costing games. MItchie 2-Bags had an off year with just 23 2-baggers and 15 HR. This largely steady platoon in 2019 should improve health and counting stats at 1B and for both of them. This is a proven veteran combo for one year ... at the plate, in the field, in the dugout, in the clubhouse, on road trips, in the community, and in the postseason, with each one providing solid depth for the other at the position, for 12-13M. All that with Chavis, Ockimey, Dalbec getting ready to move up. Yayyy. 1B is in great shape.

Another thing is that Pearce in effect helps you back up the OF. If an OF needs a day off Martinez can play a corner, and you can start both Moreland and Pearce, one at DH.
