This is a really interesting offseason. Getting Pearce back is a good step and basically finalizes the position players. Nothing needs to be done on that side of the roster. They could do something, but I think it’s silly to. Donaldson doesn’t make sense to this roster as constructed. You’d have to give up on Devers, which is fairly stupid for a guy like Donaldson who could more easily turn into a shell than bounce back to close to his former self. You’d also be selling Devers low, another dumb move. The only way it makes the least bit of sense is if you don’t believe in him or some other team is so on love with him that they get stupid. Like Mete dealing DeGrom straight up for him. DeGrom for Devers......I was thinking the same thing. Now that I would go for.

Like Mete dealing DeGrom straight up for him. DeGrom for Devers......I was thinking the same thing. Now that I would go for. You only get two years of deGrom in that deal. If you are dangling Devers I would suggest seeking out at least three years of control, which is why I've been interested if they've had conversations with the Mets on Syndergaard, the Rays on Snell and Philadelphia on Nola. Swihart could become a second guy in such a package. This is really where you need to know if you are keeping Sale or not - and the Sox know better than anyone else his long term prospects because they've see the MRIs and reports on Sale's shoulder. If you make the Devers for a high level pitcher deal, it frees you up to deal Porcello for a very good MLB-ready prospect or two in a position of need because you'll have Sale-Price-NewPitcher-ERod and perhaps Eovaldi already. The Sox are woefully understocked on middle infielders and outfielders in that regard. So if you aren't re-signing Xander, it could be a way to get a SS prospect, someone to cover Pedroia, or someone to prepare for the departure of JBJ or (gulp) Mookie. Obviously, no prospect you get for Porcello or Devers will replace Mookie but you'll need someone to play RF or CF after 2020 because it's unlikely the Sox will sign both, especially if they do resign Xander. Lotta moving parts.

deGrom is obviously a baaaaaad man, but there is no f’ing way I’m trading a young, cost-controlled future cleanup hitter like Devers for a 30+ year old arm—outstanding or not—that is due a massive pay day soon. At some point, we have to start seriously planning for extending some/most of our young core, and trying to win the offseason after a World Series title seems... shortsighted.

I really hope we keep Devers. He may have a break out next year after having a full year under his belt, plus he is cheap until like 2024. We need more cheap young guys like him in order to resign Betts, Sale, Bogey, Porcello, Barnes, etc....

Devers has rough edges in his game, but there's a monster of a hitter in there. He's already shown that he's pretty oblivious to post-season pressure, as he has impacted two post-seasons very positively already in his young career.
As time progresses, and Cora is certainly the right manager for this, I believe he will smooth out his rough edges. I do think he will limit his pitch chasing and force pitchers to throw more strikes to him. And when that happens over the next year or two, watch out.
I believe Dombrowski knows exactly what he has in Devers. I think it's a matter of time before he's batting 3rd, 4th, or 5th consistently. It's not hard for me to see next year at some point consistently becoming: Betts, Benni, JDM, Devers, X as the top 5 spots in the lineup.
DeGrom is obviously a great pitcher, but if the Sox can bring back Eovaldi and if they're very competitive with their offer, I don't see why they couldn't, a combo of DeGrom and replacement 3b is less likely to be as good over the long-term as Eovaldi plus Devers.

Rafael Devers is one of the most talented young hitters in allof baseball! His hit tool is unreal, his defensive tool could make him in the near future a GG contender. BTW, according to Cafardo, he'll spend winter training with JDM in Miami. And guys here are speculating about what kind of pitcher (you know the guys that get hurt a lot and decline suddenly) they could trade him for? Unreal! The Sox should be working hard at buying some arbitration years by offering a long term deal and certainly not trading him!

I don't know about the defense part, especially at third base.
I could see Devers moving over to 1B for Dalbec for instance in a year or two.
I agree about the bat. He'll be special by the time he's 25. Needs to learn better strikezone recognition, but that takes time.
