EDIT: Brewer was NOT a Rule 5 pick last year. He was one a couple years ago, and was with the Padres last year after signing as a MLFA. Two options remaining.

This is one of those moves made because they have extra 40-man spots. Interesting stats in the minors.

MiLB stats show a pitcher who throw strikes, miss bats and get groundballs. That's the kind od lille trades I like.

According to Even Drellich, it's Esteban Quiroz going back to the Padres.
I thought Quiroz had a chance to be a contributor in 2019 -- seeing a lot of time at second -- and think he might have been in the majors 2018 if he hadn't gotten hurt. I think he's got a chance to hit in the majors.

I like the move at first glance. Brewer is an interesting bullpen arm with options, although he will occupy a 40-man spot. Quiroz showed well in the AFL so we are potentially capitalizing on his value and getting something in return for a guy buried behind Pedroia, Holt, Nunez, and Lin on the depth chart with guys like Marco Hernandez, Chad De La Guerra, and Brett Netzer also potentially competing for middle infield spots between AA and AAA.

Kinda torn on this. I thought Quiroz had a chance to surprise people and maybe be even an average MLB player. At the sametime we do have crazy depth at 2nd base and I prefer these types of trades over big ones for relievers. Yet we also have very good reliever depth. Going to trust DD on this one.

Red Sox must have not liked what they saw from Quiroz.
I love this move. Makes you wonder how many relievers they're going to sign.
Brewer looks like he has a nasty slider.

He was mainly cutter-curveball last year with a slider for a show me pitch. Cutter graded out as his best. Sits at just above 93.

I enjoy watching Dombrowski learn from his mistakes.
He’s figured out that his “find the best guy and acquire him” routine is great for obtaining scarce assets like Sale and Kimbrel—but doesn’t work so well for building bullpen depth.
He gets burned by two relatively high-profile relief acquisitions (Smith and Thornburg), so what does he do? Focuses on undervalued/sleeper arms, as many on this forum have advocated for. Velazquez, Brasier, and now potentially Brewer.

More Brewer video and facts. Looks like he has a cutter that ranges from 92-96mph. A nasty curveball and a slider that's a little slower than his cutter in the high 80's.

Don’t elavated cutters lead to neck injuries from watching hitters blast taters?

You can't see it on this post but Colten Brewer was 6th at 92.4 MPH

Don’t elavated cutters lead to neck injuries from watching hitters blast taters? High cutters won't work at Fenway. They might have to notify the state police to warn MA Turnpike drivers when he pitches. He also is not a big strikeout guy and he appears to have some control issues. I hope that they can work with him to be a serviceable middle reliever.
