Today is the 12th. Also it's a different date for each team - it's the 13th for other teams.

Today is the 12th. Also it's a different date for each team - it's the 13th for other teams. Ah, the confusion of being retired - I am no longer good at keeping track of the date (don't really need to...pretty much have 7 Saturdays!) ANYWAY....aside from my inability to do dates, can't wait for this! Having the Patriots did what they did (but that now in the rear view mirror) - the soap opera inconsistency of the Celtics, and the endless Bruins injuries, a nice span of learning about the Sox team over the next month or so will be fun... How will Pedroia be? What of the bullpen? Sorting the catching situation....and a thinner Devers (just to start).

I;m in FLA and expect to visit camp next week. Hopefully after some of the hype has dissipated. For me biggest question mark and hope is not Sale's weight or ERod's condition, i'll be focused on Pedey. Last year they won it all with Dustin riding the pine. This season we have a full year of Eovaldi, a (please God) healthy Price, and a more patient approach from Devers. If Cora can work his magic we can repeat. How sweet this would be. Life is renewed on opening day.

My Yankee friends think they have it in the bag this year. Hope they're not too disappointed.

I read recently that the Yankees and Giants are the two favorites to land Harper. Turning down a 10 year $300 mil contract is probably a pretty dumb decision at this point. I don't think anyone in baseball is going to top that. He messed up. One has to wonder just how stupid you have to be to turn down that deal with his numbers. He should have watched what happened to Martinez last year and smelled the coffee. Athletes are often dumb as a post.

Cora announced that the Sox will use 6 starters through the first time in the rotation in the first week of the season.

A lot of pinch running for Pedrioa, no back to back days ever. Sounds like Wright will have the "Joba Chamberlain" rules that were applied to him all those years ago. Both might be on the injury list regardless if managed at the end of the year. Hopefully Marco Hernandez and Lin are ready to go at some point this year, along with Holt. Lakins, Hernandez, and Feltman hopefully will be ready to go in the bullpen this year too. Add- At least Wright can be non tendered or DFA'd at any point. Pedrioa is under contract for 3 more years and is starting to look like a albatross.

It is unwise to think of Pedey as an albatross, which is a big, ungraceful bird that brings bad luck. Pedey is big not in size but in heart and smarts and drive and skills and reputation. He has the gracefulness of a big cat on the hunt. He has been a lucky charm and team leader during this dynastic run. His contract was deliberately designed to cost less as he aged, anticipating the reduced role all out play might bring, and making him a Red Sox for life. A Red Sox hero for life. He was doing fine until that arrogant shit Machado spiked him in his surgically repaired knee. He, the Sox, and we as fans are concerned, but we know in the worst case scenario that his roster spot will be ably filled by Holt or Lin, and at low cost. It’s covered. It seems very cold and dispassionate to talk about one of our heroes, in his time of need, as an albatross. I get it. Pedey gets it. It’s still very cold.

Pedey's career in Boston should be celebrated. He had a huge part in 2 championships here. He was a MVP here. A rookie of the year here.
His current contract is turning into a small albatross on the books though. It's looking like the Sox are going to get maybe 2 WAR a year at most from Pedrioa the next 3 years. That's 6 WAR total at most for the last 4 years of his contract. At 14 AAV a year, that's 56 million dollars for 4 years. They already lost him all of last year. Even at Fangraphs 7 million per WAR value (supposedly that's what dollars are worth per WAR in their estimation), the Sox are on the losing end of that value for the last 4 years.
Pedrioa's contract is one of the many examples why there's going to be a work stoppage when the next CBA expires. Teams don't want to pay to see older players hobble around and making 14 million a year AAV wise for 3-4 years (using this as a example).

Saw this and thought this was surprising. You'd think that there would be lots of improvements in this area. The Sox were the only playoff team to have 8 players who were below replacement level. Devers might make this biggest jump from being worth negative value last year.

Still can make the biggest jump. The catching on this team should produce an extra 1 WAR this season after hitting exactly nothing last year too.

I was told workouts were cancelled for today due to the weather. I think there are a lot of media at the park anyway so maybe we will still get to read some of there stories or watch a few interviews.

Gotta say I believe bwar over fwar on Devers, which just gives you more upside.
Funny thing is bwar has 14 guys negative, but most aren't regulars just call up guys that got limited playing time. The regulars were the three catchers and Nunez.

Just read Nola agreed to extension with Phillies. There is nothing to say or do but just very frustrating. When other teams lock there guys down. This is not a dig at the FO because I don’t really know what’s going on but I feel if the player was open to extension there would of gotten done by now. Maybe the players feel the grass is greener somewhere else. Maybe there secret Yankee fans. We will soon see. The next few years will tell us a lot about the direction of the franchise.

Maybe the players feel the grass is greener somewhere else. Maybe there secret Yankee fans. We will soon see. The next few years will tell us a lot about the direction of the franchise. If they're truly trying to stay under the luxury tax limit (whether you think that's a wise move or not is another topic entirely), they really can't extend any of these guys right now, as it would almost certainly boost up their AAV. When they were trying to do it last year, yet just barely went over, it was the same thing. I'm not saying it's the right way to do things, but if they trust that they can get the guys they want at the price they want as then either hit ARB3 or enter FA, then there wasn't much of an upside from the ownership perspective to sign guys to extensions. The last line of your post is definitely correct. They're going to have to make some tough decisions, many of which will impact the next 5-10 years of the organization, and potentially longer depending on the contracts (mainly Betts). But there's a significant chance that the team in two years is drastically different than it is today, which means the farm system really has to start producing again, either to become MLB regulars at pre-arbitration, or good enough to be moved for a la Sale/Kimbrel
