Figured the back fields should have their own thread.
And what better way to kick it off than to post that the enigma himself, Christopher Acosta, is in Fort Myers.

Acosta is Like a giant squid...he occasionally surfaces from the deep to remind us of those lurking beasts in the ocean of the Sox farm, but...he always seems to promptly disappear and become the stuff of near-legend. What a bizarre road he’s had.

Flying down Friday night, will be at the back fields the 9th-14th. Yes I'm mostly there for autographs but I also post a bunch of videos on Twitter of guys on the back fields and other news/notes/etc that I hear about while I'm there so feel free to follow along ( Twitter:SoxSignatures). Excited to finally see guys like Casas, Feltman, Duran and Flores in person

Big day at the back fields today. Yes and Dwight Evans were there to watch Pedroia working out. I thought Pedroia looked ready. I noticed he was the only player to run the bases after his last swing of each round of bp. He hit several balls off the left field wall and one out. Unless his leg felt bad after running, I think he is ready to at least try playing in a game.
The minor leaguers played two inter squad games starting around noon. On one field were players like Casis, Flores, Diez, Campana, Wren, and Rusciono. On the other field were players lik Witte, Washington, Downs, and Tobias. Aybar pitched in the second game. Casis struck out in his first ab. He was playing 3rd in the field.

It will be interesting to know if we ever get the full back story on Christopher Acosta. For a kid with a lot of talent you'd think it would have to of been something serious to be suspended for three seasons, but then again, here he is still playing this year. Perhaps there's a personal element to it, and I suppose the best chance we have of getting the story is this kid making it to the majors.

I doubt if we will ever know. Look at Gary Sanchez, big name, as a minor leaguer, demoted from low A to rookie ball in spite of doing well then later benched at AA. You hear speculation but never anything concrete.

is the ST games schedule out yet? I'm up in St. Pete and the nearest I can see the Sox are in Sarasota when they play to Orioles minor leaguers. Do you have the dates for the Sarasota games? Thanks!

Here's a terrible photo of the schedule after it kicked around my camera bag... I'll see if I can replace with a better scan tomorrow.

Quick note for Fort Myers visitors that since the big club wraps up spring training against the Cubs in Arizona, their last day at JetBlue is Saturday March 23. Should be pretty quiet/free parking for that last week.

I just spent a couple of days at the Fort and was able to watch some minor league BP. Flores, Decker, Esplin and LaGrant were in a BP group. Flores and Decker were impressive and while I know Esplin isn't a significant prospect and it was only BP but he was just crushing the ball - hitting some shots.

Thanks for the report!
Not surprised on Esplin. As his scouting report here on the site says, he has plus raw power, some of the best in the system. The question is just getting to that power in games.

On another note, during my couple of days at the Fort and at the Sarasota game, I kept noticing Chatham either on the back field, pre-game BP or in the game. He looks smooth in the field and the ball sounds loud of his bat. At the pre-game BP in Sarasota, he had a nice round of BP with a few souvenirs for the folks beyond the left field fence. I hope he can stay healthy.

Watched Feldman throw an inning in the same scrimmage that Sale pitched in today. He struck out the side. Cora and DD were watching.

To add on to carmen’s report, Cora stuck around to watch Feltman, Mata, Houck and some of Schellenger, so looks like he was trying to get an idea of some of the up and coming arms in the system. Dombrowski stayed for the whole game, but only ever watched the AAA/AA side, never really wandered over to the A ball side. I posted a slow-mo video of Feltman here, though im guessing it’ll be quite grainy on a computer screen rather than a phone:

Even on a phone, it was good enough to get the idea so thank you. Maximum effort by any definition: extension, the fall off to the side, the recoil... all of it. Easy to see how he generates power and torque. A lot harder to figure out how long he can do that.

He'll be nasty if he stays healthy.

I'm not sure how long Feltman is going to be putting up 0's with 2 k's per inning in the minors, but it better not (should not) be long. The guy was drafted because he was pretty much major league ready. Time to get super aggressive with him, like DDo tends to be. It's why he was picked.
I'm positive that Feltman has something to do with why they weren't willing to spend on the BP in free agency. They're keeping quiet with him, but I think that's just smoke and mirrors.

I suspect that the farm system’s loss, sometime this season, of Feltman, Hernandez, Lakins, as well as Houck, Shawaryn and Taylor will do much to make a pretty good Boston Bullpen.

As a newbie here to the milb experience, is there a way to follow game stats on spring training games for the farm teams? I know they start today and very much appreciate the schedule posted above!

Welcome! To answer your question, unfortunately not. The minor league games are more scrimmages than games, so no stats are really kept. They'll end innings early if the team (or pitcher have) gotten their work in, they won't necessarily play nine innings, players will be randomly inserted into the lineup based on availability. For example, a couple years Chris Young and Christian Vazquez were both trying to ramp up after injuries, and they'd just have them lead off whatever inning they were going to bat in. Ian, Chris, and Mike will be down at minor league complex a week from today, so updates will be coming pretty regularly at that point.
