Anyone else going, James? I've heard rumors that Jon Meoli of the Baltimore Sun may make an appearance.

As a newbie here to the milb experience, is there a way to follow game stats on spring training games for the farm teams? I know they start today and very much appreciate the schedule posted above! Welcome! To answer your question, unfortunately not. The minor league games are more scrimmages than games, so no stats are really kept. They'll end innings early if the team (or pitcher have) gotten their work in, they won't necessarily play nine innings, players will be randomly inserted into the lineup based on availability. For example, a couple years Chris Young and Christian Vazquez were both trying to ramp up after injuries, and they'd just have them lead off whatever inning they were going to bat in. Ian, Chris, and Mike will be down at minor league complex a week from today, so updates will be coming pretty regularly at that point. Or sometimes late. A few years back when Aaron Cook was with the Sox he started a minor league game for some extra work and his sinker was sooooooo tempting that they had to have him get five outs in the first to get a real inning's worth of work.

Took a couple more videos while at the back fields today. I’m not sure I can post multiple tweets in one post, so I apologize for posting multiple times in a row:

Went to watch the two minor league games at the back fields of the Red Sox complex this afternoon. J.D., Pedroia, and Vazquez were there getting some at bats. So I guess J.D.’s back must be OK although they did pinch run for him when he got on. Hart started for the Red Sox in one game. He didn’get above 90 with his fastball. Minnesota’s first baseman hit an 89 mph pitch out off hm and Hart got hit around a bit in his 4th inning . Gorst was the second Red Sox pitcher in that game and he didn’t get over 90 while I was watching either.
In in the second game, Campana and Castellanos had some good at bats while I was watching. I am interested in both those two and am hoping they are under rated by this site.

The next guy up after Netzler also homered. Nitschioka (sp.) is his name. Neither one of them are known for their power. After a strikeout, the next guy also homered. I didn’t see who the third guy was as I was watching the other game. Porcello was throwing to Vasquez in the other game. In one inning it looked like Porcello was working almost exclusively on his breaking ball. He also seemed to be having problems with runners getting a good jump on him. Two of them stood second and Vasquez didn’t have much of a chance to get either one.
Jimenez threw the next couple of innings after Porcello. Jimenez doesn’t look like he has missed many meals. His body reminds me of Sabathia.

I believe he was a neuroscience major. Had an outstanding season in Greenville (161 wRC+) and played a little in Portland. My favorite dark horse in the system: intelligent Sr sign who looks like an outside shot at making MLB. www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=sa3002754&position=2B

For what it's worth, Pomona and Pitzer are two different colleges. They're so small that they have combined athletics programs.

Nishioka went to Pomona College. I was confused by that when I was looking at WC schools (Pomona and UC Berkeley) but the next year as a freshman going on a spring break track travel competition to UCSD and running/long-jumping against kids from “Pomona-Pitzer.” I later got the impression from talking to them that there was opportunity for a significant amount of shared academics, too. So they’re independent entities but seemed linked in an unusually tight way, at least as I understood it. It’s also about the best climate in the universe, and I kick myself sometimes for staying in NE and freezing my ass off.

Yeah, there's like 5 colleges in a really small area. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is like that too.

Red Sox high minor leaguers were supposed to play their Tampa Bay counterparts today. However, due to the threat of rain, Tampa Bay decided not to come. As a result, the Red Sox played a a couple of inter squad games instead.
A couple of thoughts after watching camp for the past couple of weeks.
Ockimey looks to me like he is thinner this year. Would like to know if anyone else thinks that too.
Casas seems to strike out ALOT. Hope I am just seeing him on bad days, but I have seen nothing that makes me think he is the next great thing.
Nishioka has looked pretty good the few times I have seen him.
i have seen mainly the guys who are supposed to play in the upper minors and believe that most of the better players the Red Sox have are in the lower minors. I am hopeful I will get to see more of the lower minor league guys in the next 10 days or so. Will be very interested to hear what the soxprospects writers think once they get down here.

Figured the back fields should have their own thread. And what better way to kick it off than to post that the enigma himself, Christopher Acosta, is in Fort Myers. Acosta is Like a giant squid...he occasionally surfaces from the deep to remind us of those lurking beasts in the ocean of the Sox farm, but...he always seems to promptly disappear and become the stuff of near-legend. What a bizarre road he’s had. I prefer to think of it as a unicorn sighting.

Definitely spent too much of his $1.5 million signing bonus on them.

Yeah, there's like 5 colleges in a really small area. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is like that too. I looked at UCSD for post-grad training and it was incredible. Had a buddy who did his immunology post-doc at Scripps and I visited then, too. What killed me (besides that particular spot being not my favorite training-wise) was the rent. $2800/mo in 2010 for a 1-bedroom. OUCH. But I totally got why. My friend paid significantly less for an ok little 2-bedroom about a 1/4 mile from the beach...and wow, that was a steal. Really gorgeous corner of the world, in so many ways. Berkeley was great, too (tho obviously the Bay’s climate can’t quite measure up), and tuition was minimal ($1800?) since my dad lived in CA, but I got scairt visiting after I got accepted...too wild for me (at that time at least). After I matriculated back east, I saw Berkeley had some big hullabaloo about a guy who went naked to his classes and filled a lawsuit to do so. I’m out there, but I can’t see *that far* out from where I stand, which says something.

How ironic would it be if in ten years from now Acosta was the one with a better MLB track record than Anderson Espinoza? All dreaming aside, has anyone seen him pitch?

Dalbec played in the AAA game yesterday and is taking grounders with AAA guys today according to the guys down in Fort Myers. Is there a possibility he starts in Pawtucket? I would think not, but I also wouldn’t be surprised a whole lot. Is this just a case of challenging a guy during spring training and then putting him back in Portland (where he belongs at this point).

Guys are typically playing up a level in minor league spring training games. Not always, but I wouldn't read too much into it. He did impress in his time with the big league club in spring training, though. But with Travis at 1st, Chavis will likely be playing 3rd most of the time. So Dalbec seems likely to start in AA. He didn't get that many AB's in Portland last year. Let's let him build on that before bumping him up. See if he can lower his K rate in AA this year, before jumping him up.

Yeah, I agree he should start in Portland. Maybe if they didn’t already have a log-jam with Travis, Chavis, and Ockimey, you could challenge him. But I wouldn’t. Guys normally playing a level up is good to know.
