Anybody want to guess Sale's extension?
I'll say 6 years at $32 million/year with option year for the 7th year at $25 million. That would be $217 million over 7 years or the same overall value as David Price.

Wow, Chris Sale definitely did well, but he didn't hold out for every last dollar or tie them up until he's 38 or whatever. Very reasonable. Glad to have Chris Sale around for quite awhile!

Crazy. Good deal for the sox, he finally gets paid, helps alleviate shoulder/wear and tear concerns.

5/150 makes sense - i guessed 5/140... he’s arguably the best pitcher in baseball until he runs out of gas in the arm. It’s a big risk but he’s so special you take it.

5/150? That's a stupid good deal for Boston.

Not going 6 years, not going $32m/year indicates to me a health-risk-based discount. EDIT: Also, it turns out I was doing bad mental math and thought this was $25M a year and not $30M a year, so there's that.

Roughly same AAV as Price, Scherzer, & Kershaw. Figure he probably gets $35/year, maybe more/another year, if he didn't have any shoulder issues/consistent fading in the second half
Don't think it's a stellar deal for the Sox, but I also don't have any real problem with it. They've now got a lot of $ locked in the rotation, but you could do far worse than Sale, Price, and Eovaldi

This feels a bit like that Steph Curry deal where the player took less because of injuries. Of course Sale has done much more in his career than Steph had done at that point, but Sale is also riskier IMO. I like it. Good money for him, could be a steal for the Red Sox if it all goes to plan.
Now there's only the other like 55 extensions waiting in the clubhouse. No pressure.

5 @ 150 is fair IMO
Sale recognizes that there is risk for the Sox and obviously wants to stay here as he could have gone to FA and beat those numbers. Then again if his shoulder gets worse this year he is taking the risk. Fair deal for both sides.
If he pitches to his level @ 175 innings/yr with the Sox limiting his innings I will be thrilled Just be healthy for the post season.

And hopefully, not likely, he starts a trend where some guys take good deals without trying to break the bank so as to keep this team together. A man can dream.

For this to be an apt comp Sale would have had to sign for like 15 per even then all the other variables you stated make it very difficult.

I read that as "allows him to pitch for the Red Sox without worrying that he is screwing himself out of $100M by occasionally pitching with a little twinge, and allows him to be honest about when he is hurt."

That's still a lot to pay our closer [/ducks]
On the discount for shoulder status, I wonder how definitive that risk is. Both seem to have agreed upon it existing, which would be rare (think back to Sox cutting bait with Pedro, who still fooled the Mets into a longer term deal). A bit like Beckett having his shoulder issue but then agreeing to a hometown discount for the certainty (he won that bet)

He can decline quite a bit and still be good.
