With all the data available to teams these days, it's rarer to see the "dumb" trades - an aging vet at career's end for a young stud, for example. Given the historical data on big dollar long-term deals, doesn't it make sense for ownership to rethink the sorts of deals it agrees to? No one is holding a gun to the head of owner or player. Why should owners continue to be stupid with their money when the bargaining agreement doesn't mandate it? In fact, the agreement penalizes teams (Boston) when it exceeds certain thresholds.

Former Sox SS Javy Guerra (Kimbrel trade) is converting from a SS to P. Supposedly was 96-100 in his first bullpen session

I don't see collusion here. Because of the way arbitration works in MLB, if you submit the number too low, the arbitrator will just go with the player's number. For me, the bigger deal is that while the two sides recently agreed to start CBA talks early, an apparent acknowledgment that they had a lot to work through for the good of the sport, crap like this makes a strike so much more likely. I seriously can't believe this was a thing. Just unreal. This... for a team to “win” they’d need to offer higher salaries so they win the award.

So top FAs available after 2019 season are:
Gerrit Cole Anthony Rendon JDM - if he exercises his opt-out (please God, no) <significant drop off> Didi Gregorious Elvis Andrus <Acapulco-like cliff drop off> Everyone else

They can. Just have to not extend someone else in the JBJ/Mookie category. This assume Porcello is gone. I’m assuming Darwinzon takes Porcello’s place and that will be an area of savings.

For SP I think Bumgarner (30) & Wheeler (30) could both crack that top tier. Time will tell.

I still imagine Houston figures out a deal to extend Cole. They have Verlander for two seasons after this and Peacock for one but McHugh and Miley are free agents. McCullers is coming off TJ. I suppose they could go young with James, Whitley and Valdez but that’s a bit risky. Maybe they resign McCugh instead but I imagine these are all plan B or C.

Toronto already in full sell mode. I wonder what it would take to get Ken Giles. Seems like he could miss more bats than, say, Hembree.

What a crap deal for Acuna. The Braves lucked out with that deal.

What a crap deal for Acuna. The Braves lucked out with that deal. The Braves certainly got great value, but for Acuna he gets security. You never know if there's a career ending injury and you don't get to cash in on the big $. This way, he's 20 years old and set for life. We should all be so unfortunate. The way the system is set up it'll come out the other way in the end. If and when he does get to free agency and he's still a star, he can grab a 10 - 12 year deal and get paid huge $ by somebody for his inevitable decline. So the Braves make out and somebody on the other end of free agency probably won't - at least not over the long-term. When you have very little money, what Acuna received is life altering money. When he gets to free agency, that's monopoly money. At that point he can afford to be picky. That money in the real scheme of his life will impact him less than the money he's going to get now, which is still plenty more than I'll ever see in several lifetimes, so good for him.

I agree on the security and I’m usually on the players side that they made a good decision for themselves but my understanding is there are two team options for years 9 and 10 for only 17m each which would make him a free agent on the wrong side of 30 and at only 17m each they seem really low. I feel like a guy like him should be getting a lot more on those team options if they even need to exist. I could be off on the details of the contract tho

Didn’t the Nationals best offer have deffered money until 2052? Seems the fans were mad at the wrong guy last night. It sucks Trea Turner is out for a while I like watching him when I get a chance.
