Unexpected, but great news! Turns 27 October 1st, if he puts it all together the next few years of prime should be well worth a sub-20m AAV.

I think we end up locking up Benni, JBJ, Devers, X, and possibly even Porcello but let Betts go. Just my opinion. Honestly.... I would offer Betts 10/325 now and if he says no..... that would be my exact plan. I would trade him asap for a whole buunch of prospects. I do not believe in those contracts. None work out well and too much cap room on one guy to field a championship team around that kind of contract unless you get lucky with low cost contributors. I like the 17-25 million "value" players. It seems like a lot of the Sox players are taking team friendly contracts. Will Betts? We need to know NOW

Wow. Xander must have wanted to stay really badly because if he repeats the season he had in 2018 then he'd be worth a lot more than that on the open market.
That's really good news. I don't really see him playing SS for 6 years, but perhaps halfway through maybe he could slide into an OF corner or 2b which could well be areas of need.
The Red Sox got off easy here.
Hopefully they take care of JD Martinez next and then eventually Mookie.
It sounds like their plan was to let Kimbrel go, and eventually let Porcello and JBJ walk, which makes sense. I think they probably would have let Xander walk too if he was looking for well above 20 million. The fact that he wasn't made him a really good deal which would have been foolish to pass up. Again, I think Xander REALLY REALLY wanted to stay in Boston.

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats Follow Follow @redsoxstats More Bogaerts was by far the toughest call on a contract because of lack of comparables and his agent. JD has his comps and I wouldn't be surprised to see him get a deal during the year. If Betts is unwilling by the winter meeting you look at trades and locking up Benny & Devers. I fully agree with the above

That's a really good deal for the Sox based on what this offseason could have looked like. He could have been a potential $200M player.
Them dishing out for Sale and Bogaerts already, paired with what Betts has said, has me worried about them extending him, so that's tempering my excitement

I think Bogaerts best years are ahead of him, he also has the type of athleticism and body that ages well. For the sake of not making shorty comparisons or being accused of blasphemy for questioning the longevity of other players I’ll leave it at that.

This was the deal I thought was more urgent than Sale, and it’s reportedly coming in at a nice price for the team. Which means X, while being set for generations, took bit of a discount to stay. Well done by both sides.

LOVE the bootcamp photo in the cracker jack (dress blues every one else) uniform. How long was the dixie cup kept rolled over? The DC used to SCREAM at us for doing that. Mostly with 4 letter words mixed in very often.

Quick 2020 tax limit check:
$115.3M Price, Sale, Bogaerts, Eovaldi, Pedroia, Vazquez combined AAV (may be a bit less because of Sale's deferred money?) $40M almost exactly -- current salaries of the 9 guys who will be arb-elgible. Half of that is Mookie, of course. Benny is the major 1st-time eligible.
That gives them about $20M for arb raises if they want to leave $5M for deadline deals. No wonder they haven't talked to Porcello.
I think they can keep JBJ and stay under the limit if they let Porcello, Moreland, Pearce, and Holt walk.

I say keep the best player. Keep the guy who is an MVP who’s skill set seems certain to age well. Will it cost a ton? Yes. You won’t ever get equal trade value for Mookie Betts.

I guessed that the extension for Xander would be 7 years and 150 million. Guess I was one year short. The deal is for 8 years if Xander stays healthy and doesn't opt out. The Sox couldn't get a deal done by the end of spring training and had to extend it to the beginning of the regular season. Excellent job of playing coy by Dombrowski.
Still a great deal for the Sox.

The extension would actually be 7 years $140 million if that option for 2026 vests. He was going to get $12 million in 2019 regardless of whether he got extended or not.
