Red Sox, X. Bogaerts Agree to Extension (6 years/$120 mill)
|
Post by pedrofanforever45 on Mar 31, 2019 21:17:24 GMT -5
I guessed that the extension for Xander would be 7 years and 150 million. Guess I was one year short. The deal is for 8 years if Xander stays healthy and doesn't opt out. The Sox couldn't get a deal done by the end of spring training and had to extend it to the beginning of the regular season. Excellent job of playing coy by Dombrowski. Still a great deal for the Sox. The extension would actually be 7 years $140 million if that option for 2026 vests. He was going to get $12 million in 2019 regardless of whether he got extended or not. Yeah that's true. I was thinking about the total value of what the Sox were thinking. The Sox can easily justify this deal by not giving up anything more on this year's arbitration number. Wouldn't want broke Henry to spend any more money this year. Add- 7 years and 140 is a great number, I'm glad Xander was willing to give a little. He clearly wanted to stay here. He's shown it throughout the years with his comments. I can't really picture Xander playing elsewhere.

I think the only reason this deal got done was that opt out. You could look at this from Xander’s perspective as a three year extension and reevaluate after the new CBA is finalized and played out. Love the deal though for the team as well. I will also second the fact that targeting deals w Benintendi and Devers will be on the agenda next off season.

Not baseball.. LOVE the bootcamp photo in the cracker jack (dress blues every one else) uniform. How long was the dixie cup kept rolled over? The DC used to SCREAM at us for doing that. Mostly with 4 letter words mixed in very often. Apologies for the misrepresentation, not me in the profile pic, but a favorite figure in baseball history -- I believe it to be Larry Doby, second to break the color barrier, hasn't gotten his 42 movie yet but such an interesting guy. Served in WW2, won the Negro League Championship in 1946, and joined Cleveland in '47 shortly after Jackie's debut. And, in the pic (but not most others), I think he has an uncanny resemblance to Mookie! Let me know if you think I should change it up!

Stating the obvious, but it is noteworthy. If Xander plays with the Sox thru 2026 that will mean that he has spent 14 years with the Red Sox. That's a lot of seasons. Not many Red Sox players stick around that long. He'd be in Pedroia, Tek, Wakefield, Rice, and Ortiz territory. And he'd still be only 32 years old when the 2026 regular season ended.

Xander is awesome. He's a goofy looking kid, but he has all the tools in the world and for all of us that he wowed as prospect, it's just great to be here.

I get the sense Bogaerts wants to be our Jeter. I won’t complain!

Been nothing but professional his whole time here. Great player. Love the fact he will be a Sox for so many years.
Interesting about this timing and that stupid tweet about Correa and Lindor the other day.

That makes 2 very big signings at fair contracts for both player and team. Could have been 3 as Porcello wants in but the brass looks like they are not counting him into the long term plans. I completely get it as you just can't sign everyone but it makes me feel bad for him as he really wants to stay and would take a below market deal, now he has to play with that weighing him down a bit. I am sure or I hope he sucks it up, uses it as motivation and has one of his great years.
Does it put a little pressure on Mookie to do the same? Take something fair but not cap killing to keep the band together? I think it does at least a little. Does he think 10/325 with an opt out at some point is fair? I think maybe he would, puts him right there at the top.

Like everyone else has said, I think this is a great deal and love that it puts Bogaerts in a position to be a lifetime Red Sox. I think one great residual is that it makes me more optimistic about JD sticking around. Both are represented by Boras. Must drive Boras a little bit nuts when Sox players tell him that they love it here and just get me a fair deal so I can stay. Is Tek the first one way back when?

Yeah I'm sure he's very broken up about the multi-million dollar payday this represents for Boras Corp. Also, how little would the Red Sox have to re-sign Xander for before people wouldn't call it a "fair" deal for him?

He's probably thrilled by it, actually. It's a lot less work and it's still a lot of money, and it fights against the false notion that he's only in the game for himself at the expense of the players. Makes it easier for his agency to pick up players who are in a similar situation. AND it helps him stay on good terms with a team that is willing to spend lots of money. It seems those being driven nuts are the ones who can't turn Boras into the villainous caricature.

I always thought this would be a complicated deal to put together. Between the lack of comparable SS deals out there and Bogaerts' somewhat erratic career, I just wasn't sure what the deal would look like. That said, I am super happy with his deal.
Xander was the first prospect that I followed throughout the minors and made me into a frequent reader of this site.

They are, at the same time, gambling a little on themselves. It's a good deal for both sides in a way with the opt-out. It is representative of ability to sign other players. Mookie maybe FA, maybe resign Beni in a year? I remain hopeful for more offense from Xander, and that is mighty greedy. Edit for spelling

I’m shocked that a boras client signed an extension pre FA I’m not actually surprised, so much. The Strasburg deal was the kicker for me (and in light of Varitek’s deals with the Sox). Boras is a generally terrific agent (at least for high-end guys) because he’s very good at negotiating max value. But in the end, he’s an agent of the player...and it’s his job to meet the desires of his clients. Like Strasburg, Bogey really wanted to stay, obviously. He got a good deal given the team’s direction and impending payroll crunch, especially in light of this past off-season’s developments. This is win-win, especially since Bogaerts will still be young enough at his next FA date that he should (especially if his true “prime” years are ahead) get paid pretty well on one last deal. He really does get to stay with a team for which his value is greater than just about any other. I am pretty ecstatic about this deal. The AAV is “low” enough that, say, replacing Pearce/Nunez next year with Chavis ablates the $8M salary bump for Bogey and keeps them salary-neutral on that front. The end of Panda’s horrific contract covers the salary bump for Sale. Porcello leaving frees $20M to cover a few arb raises, and hopefully the $12-15M salary bump Mookie would get. They might actually be able to keep most of this group together for a couple more years, depending on how aggressively they’re willing to exceed cap. I’d love it if they could, say, rip up JDM’s deal (or he just opts out), and then sign him to, say, a long deal at lower AAV that basically acts like deferred money. There are ways to eek out a few $M here and there that would allow them some more wiggle room, and he, in particular, seems like a strong bet to age well into his late-30s. Better than Nelson Cruz, for example, who’s still going strong.

Fangraphs piece says Xander left about $50 million - 29.4% - of his value on the table. blogs.fangraphs.com/sox-bogaerts-agree-on-120-million-extensionI will bet my icon for the next three years (with an opt-out after 2) that Mookie does not leave 29% or more of his estimated value (fWAR/$ Fangraphs formula) on the table in his next deal. Xander def feels he found a home* for most of the rest of his career. *Pending his use of the opt-out post new CBA.

Also frees up money to go get Cole, as top starters who can go more than 200 innings will become the new market value in the coming age of the opener. ADDED; This is my official April 1 post, though I am all for signing Cole this off season.

Good Lord. We actually have the "canonization" of Scott Boras going on here. Yeah, if you were a big ticket free agent or a major market, he is gold. If you were a fan of a small market club or a team on the brink that needed, but couldn't afford, that one great player, forget it.
He has been marginalized now because his business model no longer works when teams have more money and are making investments in players at earlier stages of their careers.
I am not saying the guy was all ill, but I am not going to give him baseball sainthood either.

Maybe not villainous, but every time he puts out one of those fancy books comparing Oliver Perez in several ways to Randy Johnson (which he did) when Ollie reached FA several years back and all those large.. Whoppers he's known for to use a kind word.
It's not hard to see, for some him in a twisted way and nothing more than the epitome of everything that has gone wrong with the game.
Some might say Marvin Miller was bad, I will not and never did. He brought changes.. Some good and a few maybe not as good. Boras has brought nothing but a hard line "my way or the hell with you" stance which is grating and will use any tactic to get there, even lie, which he has shown with those books he at least used to put out and publicly puts forth in media speeches time after time with regards to "his" clients.
Yes.. It's the job of an agent to help a client, and indulge as much as possible in their respective abilities and they all do to a certain degree, but the amount Boras goes to far exceeds what is reasonable and hits fantasy levels. It's no wonder "his" people have become the 1st "victims" in the new era of somewhat fiscal sanity when combined with his hard headedness.

This looks like the formula where they value one WAR at $8m across the board, is that true? If that's the case, I might take that action. If Mookie is projected as the roughly 7 win player throughout the contract that he's projected to be in 2019, that's a $56M player. Take 29.4% off the top and that's $39.7M. He'd have to exceed Trout's AAV by $4M to beat the over. I think the article has Xander peaking and dropping. Assuming Mookie regresses somewhat this year and signs an 8 year deal, I’m guessing his ave WARwill be around 6 with heavy front loading. But the offer stands.

Hate the defense attorney who does his job and provides such a good defense that his guilty client walks. Boras is neither a saint nor evil. He's damn good at his job. Most of the time it's about getting his clients the most possible money. That's what his clients tell him to do. Sometimes, he gets a deal done for less because that what his client wants - security or to be with that team. You're making a straw man argument here just to continue the Boras hate. Nobody is making him out to be a saint. Just pointing out he does what his clients ask get the most money possible wherever that is or the most money from "x" team. He works for the player. And as James pointed out earlier, it's a lot less work to just work out a decent deal with the Sox and still collect a very nice commission.
