Marcus Wilson was rated the #20 prospect in the Diamondbacks' system by BA and MLB Pipeline. Fangraphs had him at #7 in 2017.

Actually feels like a better prospect than expected, in particular because of the DFA. Feels like there's probably not a ton of upside, though his floor could be higher than many if his hit tool advances at all
Also, yes, the Red Sox bungled the entire Swihart situation, basically blowing multiple option years, and never giving him a chance. They may have had an actual chance to use him as close to a centerpiece in the Hamels deal, but aside from that specific moment, I'm not sure he ever had a ton of value. Again, that's partly because of how the Sox played it, but also because he hadn't really posted anything worthwhile on offense since 2015

Interesting bat. Doesn't look like there's much of a hit tool in his swing though. Very high strikeout numbers.

I have never heard of Marcus Wilson. What's the scoop on him?

Fangraph's 2019 ARI list isn't out yet, so here's what they said last year: 7. Marcus Wilson, CF Drafted: 2nd Round, 2014 from JSerra HS (CA) Age 20 Height 6’3 Weight 175 Bat/Throw R/R Tool Grades (Present/Future) Hit: 30/50 Raw Power: 45/50 Game Power: 20/45 Run: 60/60 Fielding: 45/50 Throw: 50/50 Wilson made some minor swing adjustments in 2017 that lead to more in-game power, but much of his profile is grounded in his eye for the strike zone and ability to play center field. He’s now about as old as a college draftee and has tools on par with late first-/early second-round picks. He’s a potential everyday center fielder so long as he keeps hitting and reaching base, even if last year’s power spike was a bit of a mirage. His timing at the plate was a bit off this spring, but he’s made adjustments before and is likely to do so again. blogs.fangraphs.com/top-23-prospects-arizona-diamondbacks/

I wonder how much IFA money they included. This is a much better prospect than I thought they'd get.

I remember Marcus Wilson as a HS prospect entering his draft year and think I kind of liked him. I haven't really tracked his minor league career though. Questionable hit tool, but nice OBPs from strong walk rates. Tools starting to translate into power and SB totals in past couple of years. Pretty interesting guy.

It's pretty much what I expected. The organization played this catcher situation so poorly.

He is a quick twitch athlete. I was hoping for more, honestly.

I guess Marcus Wilson is what you can expect. He's a project. I honestly don't think the hit tool will allow him to hit for enough average and the power (yes I know in 34 ABs he's slugging .529) and some walks won't play up enough.
I hope I'm wrong and this looks silly but my first thought was he makes JBJ look like he has a great hit tool.
Hopefully the best case scenario is that he hits more like he did in 2017. 2018 was a regression year. If he can hit like 2017 and carries it to the majors and the power starts playing up, then they've really got something, but that's a lot to imagine.
Hope they use their additional international bonus pool wisely.

I'm guessing the Sox knew this was going to happen before the callup. They gave Chavis his uniform number. That doesn't usually happen until a player is absolutely gone.

This MLB . com article has some feedback from DD regarding Marcus Wilson. Seems they liked him when he was drafted and have followed him. MLB.com link

Wilson sounds like a legitimate candidate to replace JBJ if he leaves or is traded. He has a pretty high floor with very good CF defense and speed. His ceiling is mainly defined by his ability to get stronger and develop more power.

Looks like the International Bonus Pool money was $500k per a DBacks story on MLB .com and Swihart will be a utility man for now. Story link

I'll be super interested in seeing what # he'll be ranked for the Sox. I'll guess somewhere between #10 and 13.

Story linkThat’s ridiculous amount of international money for someone who can’t hit. Essentially throwing away good money to cover up the numerous mistakes made with Swihart. I would have preferred they sign two or three lottery ticket type of international prospects and let Swihart go for organizational filler.

I sure hope not as he doesn’t appear to be able to hit, He wasn't able to hit well in one season when he made a lot of adjustments. But that doesn't mean he'll never hit or never hit in any other season. Also his very good defense and speed gives him a high floor. The walk rates are also encouraging.
