“Tendinitis.” I hope so. Another thing that didn’t go wrong last year hitting this year.

Ryan Weber up from Pawtucket as the corresponding move?? Didn't see that one coming.

Shawaryn didn't line up to take this start, but with MLB off days on Thursday and Monday it would be pretty easy to slot him in the next time through, if they are so inclined. In the meantime they need innings: Weber apparently had an opt out, and he has an option left.
The Red Sox 40-man is now at 40, putting Chandler Shepherd's spot on some shaky ground.

Maybe the 40 man crunch is resolved by moving Brian Johnson to the 60? He has already been down 30. If he is out until at least June 6th this would work.

But with all due respect to Shepherd, he has an ERA of 10.07 and hasn't been in the conversation for a call up in year and a half he's been on the 40-man. If Johnson (or Eovaldi) is definitely going to be out long enough then sure, throw them on the 60-day and kick the decision down. But even if it's borderline I don't think they should push them back just to save that spot.

40 man crunch? Does anyone think they're worried about losing Ryan Weber?

In the meantime they need innings: Weber apparently had an opt out, and he has an option left. The Red Sox 40-man is now at 40, putting Chandler Shepherd's spot on some shaky ground. I'd guess they'd start Velazquez on Tuesday and have him go once through the order or maybe a bit more. And in fact that's how ESPN has it.
With three off days in an 8-day span after this series, this is certainly a good time to be this thin, but Sale's first turn after this series falls on one of these off days, which complicates things.
They won't need a 5th starter until May 21. They'll need a 4th starter just twice before then: on Sunday May 12 vs. Seattle and in the middle game of the Astros series, Saturday the 18th. What happens tonight and tomorrow will help determine what they do there, of course. I do think that Weber going down and someone else coming up is a given after this series, and it will be interesting to see who it might be.
One would hope that Price will be back by May 24 when they're in Houston starting a stretch against them, the Indians, and Yankees. If not, here's a strategy they could use: use Velazquez as an opener twice through each rotation turn, with first Smith and then Shawaryn providing the "bulk" after him. If one of those guys really impresses, they can become the starter in that slot.

40 man crunch? Does anyone think they're worried about losing Ryan Weber? It is not Weber that creates the crunch. The crunch comes if the team is in a position due to injury where they have to add another player to the roster. If we lost a catcher right now, someone would need to be added to the 40 and someone would have to be removed.

this is gonna be rough replacing Eovaldi and Price...our starting pitching depth doesn't look in the best shape at the moment

Well, this game was a uphill climb anyways. You need better pitching depth than Josh Smith.

It may, but there is a lot of game left, and the bats have been better as of late.

Meanwhile, still in his 3rd week in the majors, Chavis is put in the cleanup spot. Quite the role for a guy this early, when JBJ and Devers were being talked about as candidates to move up in the lineup after much longer on the job.

That should be it for Means at 97 pitches. Impressive outing. Hopefully the O bully does not fare nearly as well.
