It's a new season - we've scored as much as we've given up and we are one game from .500. Hoping we can get over the hump tomorrow!

My guy Marcus Walden with yet another big performance. Offense woke up a bit (Bogey looks like he might hit 30 HR if he has a good hot streak; Vazquez continues to surprise), and Barnes shutting the door efficiently with the DP (he’s getting very good at elevating for whiffs or using the CB to induce GB). Still, Walden’s my POTG. He looks like he might Roy Face this season. OK, I jest...but only sorta.

He's also the only guy who can go 3 innings which is why he usually comes in 2nd in these games. Yes, but he could have come in second after Velazquez got stretched out. Eovaldi hasn't started throwing yet, neither has Johnson. He is going to be in this in this role for a while. You need to stretch this guy out and Cora takes him out immediately after taking a lead. Geez man, you have complained about so many things in this thread and they are all problems you invented. (Well, except for JBJ not doing so hot.) Anyway, Red Sox are 12-6 in their last 18 games - exactly the pace they played at all of last season. Did April 17th mark the end of their "extended spring training"?

Things are looking up for sure, and there is just a better vibe - not all the way there yet, but getting close.
In a good place - Mookie, Xander, JD, Benni, Raffi, Mitch, CVaz, Chavis. In fact, Raffi, CVaz and Chavis are upgrades over last year for sure. Stuff scuffling - JBJ, Pearce, Nunez Coming back and hopefully ready to help soon - Brockstar, Pedey
Pitchers - Price's injury is a bummer (Eovaldi as well) - but Sale, Porcello, ERod trending positively, and some killer performances in the pen. Hoping Brasier's recent struggles will pass. But Walden! Workman! Barnes!
Not sure yet what we have with Brewer and Thornburg, but Hembree is not causing too much angst. Velazquez valuable in his flexibility. Getting Johnson back would be helpful.
Now we can push to .500 and over and start scratching at Tampa's lead.

You sound like Cora right now. They all count as the same games. -These aren't problems in my own head, it's just problems no one else wants to acknowledge

that is because the Yankees could dip into their farm system and bring up players that are more than ready to take over. remember the big selloff by the Yankeees to build up their farm system including the trade of chapman for Torres and getting him back in free agency and the trades for Clevelands and several other teams high end prospects. they are now being utilized as the replacements for the lost starters. Yeap. Simply put, the Yankees have had WAY better starting pitching depth to begin with. I'm getting mocked on here (once again), but the Yankees 6th starter in German is literally pitching like a Cy Young candidate right now. They have very good SP depth for sure, but there have been SO many injuries, and their positional depth isn’t great. They’ve gotten lucky, to an extent. German, btw, is a step in command away from being an excellent pitcher (I’m presuming/hoping he’s on an unsustainable hot streak right now). His stuff is fantastic. I was concerned he might bust out last year, and he may this year...but he’s got #2 upside. He seems to have gone heavier with the excellent cutter and/or maybe dialed back a little on velo to improve location, and it’s working. Ugh.

That’s the point, with Price down, they may need him sooner than waiting 5-6 days. Josh Smith was a spot start, and they’re more likely to go with Shawaryn next turn. Yes, there is a SP depth issue, but I don’t think anyone’s really disputed that. I’m not sure anyone’s avoided talking about it either. They DO have options, though. None is great (there’s a strange universe where if Price is out for a while they try Darwinzon, as unlikely as it is). He called the beginning of the season ST as a jab at the preseason plan, and the result that the team looked like they were still in ST mode for 2 weeks. C’mon, man. Too much doom and gloom. Yes, this team has flaws. ALL teams have flaws. You’re catastrophizing though; it’s like the offseason bullpen thing. I kept saying they had enough depth that some guys would emerge. And they have. It wasn’t any prescience on my part...just a calm, rational perusal of “what is.” And “what is” with this team right now is they’re having some SP injury struggles and several key players haven’t hit their stride. But there’ve been several nice surprises (including huge ones in Chavis, Walden, and Workman), and some good signs of progress for guys like Rafi, Beni, and Vazquez. Don’t sweat it, it’s early. There’s lots of baseball left, and this team looks TONS better than they did a month ago.

There’s lots of baseball left, and this team looks TONS better than they did a month ago. I don't think Velazquez can be stretched out for 3 inning outings. Agree to disagree there. The bullpen already has had enough stress from the month of April from working too many innings. He needs to go more innings. Going with a planned bullpen day will wear out these guys by July. -Josh Smith shouldn't be relied on a spot start, unless you want to bank losses. There are nice signs, especially with the offense and Chris Sale especially, but there are red flags too. I post a ton of positive stuff and a lot of negative stuff. People have been harping on the negative for years with me. The last thread had more positive than negative. No one acknowledged that. Then there are some people who just can't stand my opinion in general here, whether I'm right or wrong. Literally been called a troll 2 different times by two different people after Umass backed me up and said I made good points.

But also, pedrofan, your criticism wasn't that Josh Smith is the current #5 starter; your criticism, levied over a large number of comments, was that Dombrowski screwed up by setting up Smith as the #8 starter. Which, yeah... I don't think that's the issue on which the whole season's gonna turn.

What's been so surprising about Chavis's run has been the walks. He's always had good power and it's always seemed like he homered in bunches (though I haven't gone back through the logs to confirm that). But he's always been a little bit on the aggressive side, not just on swings and misses, but also getting overamped and making weak contact on pitches he didn't need to swing at. The walks seem to indicate he's been really focusing on waiting on his pitch. I don't know if that's higher-end coaching, his pitch recognition maturing, or just one of those flukish things where pitchers are working a young hitter out of the zone to get a feel if he'll get himself out. It's really interesting though.

I am beginning to like this team a lot. Imagine what it will be like when JBJ gets hot, as he almost certainly will. Have to give credit to the front office for the bullpen.
The most interesting question is whether pitchers will figure out Chavis, and if they do, if he can adjust.. II he keeps hitting this team might top last year's in hitting.

Put me on record as not caring about the 5th starter at the moment, considering they don't need one for the next 2 weeks.

Tomorrow's greater importance is seeing if Sale can keep pitching like himself.

Read 0 for last 9 and getting him on high stuff so we are about to find out. OTOH Workman has allowed no hits in his last 9 innings.

Yeap. Simply put, the Yankees have had WAY better starting pitching depth to begin with. I'm getting mocked on here (once again), but the Yankees 6th starter in German is literally pitching like a Cy Young candidate right now. You don't seem to understand what "depth" means. Or "to begin with."
On the winter rosters, the #6 guys were German and Stephen Wright. Pretty clear edge to the Sox.
The #7 guys were Jonathan Loaisiga and Brian Johnson. Ditto. Loaisiga's about to make his 3rd start for the Yanks.
The #8 guys were Gio Gonzalez and Velazquez. They had to cut Gonzalez loose, and they now don't seem to have a #8. They have only 2 SP on option, Chance Adams and Albert Abreu, and they're getting hit hard in AAA and AA respectively. None of their AAAA veterans at Scranton are pitching particularly well.
You're comparing a team that has only needed 2 starts from their #7 to a team that has needed 5 starts from their #8 (and gotten +0.22 WPA, granted, in more of an opener role) and 1 emergency start for a #9 that had to go to the arm that was convenient, and you're concluding that the former has more depth because the #6 has been great while the other team's #9 was unimpressive.
Meanwhile, the Sox #8 has pitched twice as much as the Yankees #7 and bests him on every metric, while the Yankees do not appear to have a #8 at all.
If the Yankees had to have given 6 starts to guys beyond Loaisiga on their depth chart they'd be so far up the creek Fed Ex would refuse to ship them a paddle.
(Probably an exaggeration, but it wouldn't have been pretty.)
