I really hope this isn’t a retirement announcement, but at this point that might be best for Pedroia. If it is, then Pedey will go out as one of the best second basement and Red Sox of his generation.

Love Pedey but it doesnt look good. Lets hope Chavis can keep producing. They are gonna need him for at least the next two months.

I'm holding my breath... PLEASE not a retirement! He's only 35. At least not until Chatham is ready. Though if Chatham does become Pedroia's replacement we would go from 1 injury prone 2B to another (Chavis probably moves to 1B in 2020). Of course, with Pedroia, that's worth it, as he's a HOFer. Chatham won't be, but could still be a solid contributor once he is ready and when he is healthy. I was hoping Pedroia would at least play out this season and next season and Chatham would be ready by 2021, and even then Pedroia could maybe stick around on the bench to finish his contract.

Yeah I think it's a retirement announcement too. Sad way to end his great career.

I'd bet a good amount of money that he's not retiring in 15 minutes unless the Red Sox are going to pay him $35 million to coach.

I'm sure the team will take care of him in some capacity. How? The guy is out here trying to earn his paycheck by trying to come back. He could be kicking it in Arizona being like "naw my knee hurts... keep the paychecks coming." The only way your position makes sense is if you're under the mistaken impression that he doesn't count toward the CBT if he retires. Maybe that's the case? They're paying him either way and it counts toward the CBT - it's a credit to Pedroia that he's at least been trying to earn that money. ----- Anyway, all speculation on Twitter is that he's not retiring, but rather that he's going to take a step back and reassess. Makes sense after all of these stops and starts on his rehab.

He may feel that staying on the roster is just not worth it. Has to be killing him not to play for 2 years. He can make up the money with the organization in other ways.

Asked if Pedrioa will ever play again-
"I'm not sure"
"I'm just taking some time right now to asses everything."
Pedrioa might know he's done at this point.

If so, it would be a tough way to end a great career. He and Ortiz were for many years the face of the Sox. Loved watching him play the game. He always gave it everything he had.

Is there any chance where you can see yourself coming back and playing one or 2 days a week-
"I don't know. It's not fair to the Sox to have one middle infielder to play once or twice a week."

I think that if he was sure, he would say so, since it would be better for the team if they knew vs if they didn't since it would allow them to prepare for the future of 2B.

This shows you how little faith you can have in Stephen Wright too, who had the SAME EXACT SURGERY. It is ridiculous anyone thought he was a starting pitching option at all this year.

In regards to Steven Wright I would imagine that pitching an inning or 2 every few days will be easier on him than trying to play 9 innings every day

I read he isn't thinking about surgery, but there has to be some medical review, no ? Was there any mention of that during the press conference ?

Why would he still count against the CBT if he is retired? Do you mean just for this year?

Do you mean just for this year? He could retire and forfeit his salary but he doesn't need to so I think it's pretty ridiculous to assume the Red Sox aren't paying him all the salary still owed to him and that it might not count against the cap. It will. He deserves every penny. The main thing is that it's time to move on from him from a roster construction standpoint and determine his permanent replacement.

In regards to Steven Wright I would imagine that pitching an inning or 2 every few days will be easier on him than trying to play 9 innings every day You sure because pitching is all about mechanics. If Wright can't be mechanically sound because his knee is hurting, then he is going to get lit up. He has shown to get blasted every time he hasn't been 100 percent. I don't have the faith you do in him staying healthy at all beyond this point.

All credit to Dustin for trying, but you have to believe he is finished. He gave everything his body had, and then a crucial part of it gave out, in a way that doesn't allow recovery, especially for a stop and start position like 2B. It isn't a question of whether or not he feels better in a year or two. It's whether his knee can hold up enough to get into even a modicum of playing shape, let alone play at a ML level at least semi-consistently.

My feeling - I loved Pedey as a player - he is one of the all time great Red Sox. We won it all in historic fashion without him last year. He deserves to enjoy life, so if this is it, I am happy to feel the joy that we was so stellar for our team - and all can move on with clarity.
Just say no to Nunez, though...Brock, Marco - and of course Chavis - but NOT Nunez.
