Pretty good story, but nothing we have't heard before tbh. Mentions with or without the new policy, the Red Sox and Noah both seemed to be very excited. Does say Noah is expected to go to fall instrux.

Toth was on active duty for a year. That may have factored in.

Just for clarity here, Trump's executive order was for the armed forces to come up with a concrete plan within 120 days to defer active duty until after the candidate's playing days are over. Given the timing of the executive order, the 120 days expires about 10 days or so before Song begins active duty in November (he's active reserves now). Trump is Commander-in-chief of the military. It isn't a debatable issue, it's a command to the military.

I don't think Jim Callis was wrong when he mentioned the Red Sox as one of the teams who had drafted really well through round 4 during the mlb telecast.

I always love the assessments that go: advanced, plus fastball, decent other stuff... maybe a 4th starter. I wish that described our fourth starter! This guy could be the biggest Sox draft steal since Mookie.

I asked Herzenberg about Song's velo on Twitter, and it looks like Ian and I saw Song's velo down a bit. He was more like 93-95 for us, while Josh saw him more 94-96 T97.
By the way, there's a tremendous note about Song (hm, pun originally unintended but I'll take it...) in the interview I recorded yesterday with Mike Rikard for the podcast regarding Song's offspeed stuff.

...a live arm with command.
Love that talk. With Bannister's focus on the minors, there may be reinforcements for the ML roster coming along more quickly than we've seen in the past few years.

When do we find out what the next two years are going to be for Song? I mean, if he were able to continue to develop in the Sox organization these next two seasons, I'd have to think he's the top pitching prospect and the guy who will be the best starting pitcher developed since Jon Lester.

The defense department is reviewing its policy for draftees with a military commitment. They expect to have that completed by November.

Admittedly, I am one of the more fan-boyish guys here. But that short write up has me pretty enthusiastic. It's been since Espinoza that I was this emotionally invested in a pitching prospect. I admit having a minor crush on Groome shortly after he was drafted, but this might be a serious relationship with Noah Song and me.
The Red Sox are so very overdue for developing some solid starting pitching within the organization. My wishful thinking is that the service time with the Navy is just gonna get worked out. I am very much looking forward to seeing this guy develop and move up the site's rankings, through the minors, and onto a mound at a MLB game near you.
Not listening to anyone tell me to check myself after one small report on one outing. Let a guy dream.

Excellent observation. Starting with Song, Groome, Mata, Ward as SP, there are very good arms coming through the system. Throw in Feltman, Brewer, Houck, Shawaryn etc. in AAA and The Bannister Move could be among the most significant of the “Four Friends” for both short and long term success. Mr. Bloom will appreciate this.

I don't think this is anything new.

The announcement of a formal change in his position is new though. I'm assuming there will be somewhat less of a focus on the 25-man roster with perhaps more time spent on the pitchers coming up through the system.

Don't know if this was discussed yet. Wonder how it might impact a certain Red Sox minor leaguer.
Athletes attending U.S. military academies can now delay entry into the armed forces upon graduation to play professional sports if they make the cut.
Defense Secretary Mark Esper signed a memo last week that allows students attending service academies such as West Point and the Naval Academy to seek a waiver that would delay their entry into the armed forces so they could play professional sports.
The waiver would have to be approved by the defense secretary, and the athletes must eventually fulfill their military obligation or repay the cost of their education.
