So as no team claimed him off waivers there's the temptation not to place him on the 40 man roster other than the possibility Dombrowski would pick him Rule 5 again. I guess the Sox have until December 7th to decide whether they need to place him on the 40 man roster? Yes? No? Maybe? Noah. Song. Is. Like. Every. Other. Minor. League. Player. Who. Is. Eligible. For. The. Rule. 5. Draft. Which means if the Sox have any concerns about him being drafted again they need to place him on the 40 man roster by what date? Can the Sox wait right up until just a day before the draft evaluating the whole time and then decide if he's worth protecting?

If that's not a paper move and he's actually going to pitch for the WooSox then that is very surprising

That's what I was asking. At least that gives them three months to evaluate.

Figured they would have sent him to Fort Myers first to assess everything. My guess is at least initially they want him close to Boston so the team can easily see him in person and talk to him. Maybe they won't even use him in games. They could just have him throw bullpens and do other work on the side.

I know it was briefly mentioned in the last podcast, but what if the Red Sox just shut Song down for the year and let him rebuild? Pretty much give him a long offseason. They can spend the time getting him on a throwing and training program that will bring him back into baseball shape.
His velo, command, and overall stuff has been super inconsistent this year, if they just shut him down from games and let him retrain his body to pitching I think Song could return to something close to his previous self.

Happy to have Noah back in the system. Will take some time to get his velocity back on his pitches since he didn't play baseball for awhile.

Dont they have to put him in Worcester so he is not eligible for the Minor League Version of the Rule 5 draft in the offseason? I guess that may only by the end of the season but I think he needs to be on the AAA roster or else the minors version of the draft kicks in. But I may be drinking too early on a Friday....

FWIW, he's been assigned to Worcester. Doesn't preclude them from sending him anywhere else (I personally think they should just send him to the FCL). Is this potentially to protect him from the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 draft?

I'm fairly sure they just need to put him on the AAA reserve list by November (the same time the 40-man roster is set).
I can definitely see Dombrowski picking him in the minor league portion of the draft if they don't though.

Glad he is back with the Red Sox organization. There were many, when his return seemed less likely, that stated that it was really a long shot that he'd make it to the majors and be a good pitcher, given his time away from the game. I just hope he can be properly developed to enable him to regain his form over a more realistic time frame. And I hope our expectations aren't unreasonably raised just because he's back with the Red Sox.

It would have been nice if Song could've just been a baseball player when he finished his committment to the Navy, a shame that Dombrowski started this circus with him, hopefully he can be a normal minor leaguer now and focus on his development going forward.

I'm not sure this whole situation has been a net negative for Noah Song. He was rushed by the Phillies and that may have led to his injury, but there's a good chance that he would have suffered an injury anyways after all that time off, and even with the injury he really only missed maybe a month or so of actual playing time (he spent a lot of his DL time ramping up and in rehab games that he would have been in anyways; if he were in the Red Sox system the whole time, not sure he would have gotten in that many more minor league games). Maybe his development this year was less than ideal, but a lot of his struggles this year would have occurred no matter which jersey he wore (three years off will do that to you) and I'm not sure the Red Sox development program would have been all that worse than what he got from the Phillies.
In the meantime, he collected four months of an MLB salary, is eligible for the minimum annual MLB pension of $34,000 per year and will receive lifetime medical coverage. Given how long the odds were of him being a major leaguer immediately prior to the Rule 5 draft, if given a choice between this reality and the alternate universe where I am not drafted by the Phillies and spend the first four months of the season with the Red Sox minor league affiliates, I honestly would probably choose the Phillies' path. Your mileage may vary.

I will make a wild guess that he will be unprotected again this year for the R5 draft and a lot of people on here will be very upset about it.
Presumably this thread will reach 100 pages before Song reaches the majors in a Sox uni

Posting this one more time just for the lulz folks It qualifies Abraham as a certified troll, certainly not a sportswriter of any worth. What is he doing to inform his followers? Whatever it is it has nothing to do with the logistics of the Rule 5 draft. The staff and posters here pointed out time and time again what would happen and it did. I really don't know what to make of this social media junk.
