With the recall of Darwinzon Hernandez for tonight’s game, the Red Sox 25 man roster has 13 home grown prospects active compared to 12 active non prospects. The last time this happened was in 2016 when Mike Miller was called up for a few days. Before that I found that in 1991 there were days where the Sox 25 man roster had 14 active prospects. Of course the roster now seems to change on a daily basis.

1988 was a very homegrown roster. Off the top of my head the 25 man roster usually had: Jim Rice, Rich Gedman, Todd Benzinger, Marty Barrett, Jody Reed, Wade Boggs, Mike Greenwell, Ellis Burks, Dwight Evans, which was basically the starting 9. The rotation had Roger Clemens, Bruce Hurst, Oil Can Boyd, and Jeff Sellers. The bullpen had Bob Stanley, so that's about 15 homegrown players and at various times Sam Horn and Brady Anderson were also on the roster as was Tom Bolton, and even Mike Smithson, who was in the Sox organization, got traded, and came back to Boston. I'd guess it was very common prior to that season as the Sox weren't big on free agency back then and they had a productive farm system.
