www.masslive.com/redsox/2019/07/boston-red-sox-prospect-gilberto-jimenez-has-4-or-5-tool-potential-is-rising-up-organizational-rankings-at-19.htmlDidn't know what else to come up with for a title. I'm no iakovos11. Anyways, Gilberto is already a top 20 prospect in the Sox system in mostly any website you can find out there. He's ranked number 8 here on this website, currently. He probably deserves his own thread and respect here now. Masslive did a nice piece on him with this article. A small tiny observation is that he looks a lot like Curtis Granderson with that batting stance from the left side of the plate (he's probably nothing like Granderson the player). The Sox have now 2 top 10 prospects who signed for 10 thousand dollars each at the time. Jimenez and Mata. So kudos to the Sox for keep finding guys out of no where.

In that article it says he has 55 abs vs lefties and 15 vs righties. Is it just me or is that really weird?

I posted this over in a recent gameday thread but is applicable here.....Jason Pennini of Prospects Live had a recent look at the Lowell squad and included a writeup of Jimenez which I think vibes with the internal reports here, although one might quibble with the "80 runner" and "double plus arm":

In case you missed it, I wrote in the 6/22 gameday thread Jimenez bunted the ball right back to the pitcher, who fielded it cleanly and fired to first, and he beat the throw from the right handed batters box. It was one of those things you see but still don't believe it happened. I know the scouts don't like to give 80's, but I don't believe I've ever seen anyone faster than Gilberto on that play.

Hit a homer off a righty last night. Pretty good sign considering his left handed swing is the one that isn’t natural to him
Could’ve been an inside the Parker for all I know

Having seen him live once in Lowell, I’d like to say despite having a long way to go developmentally, I see him as the clear cut best prospect to take over for Jackie Bradley. His 80 speed has now been confirmed by soxprospects, and he looks even faster live. More importantly, he’s got plus range and a plus plus arm which to me are key tools for a center fielder. His bat speed is definitely a plus. Looks blinding fast. If he can develop his hit tool to even above average, he will be a first division regular in my opinion. If his hit tool develops any more than that, you’re looking at an all star. His ceiling and athleticism are very high, he’s one to follow very closely as he moves up the ladder.
Next time I go to a Lowell game, I’ll specifically track the type of pitches and velocities he makes contact with, and the swing and misses.

Out of 1642 minor leaguers with at least 220 plate appearances this season Jimenez has the 17th highest opposite field batted ball rate and 10th highest ground ball rate. 3.1 ground balls for every fly ball. I'd love to see the trackman data on him, I haven't seen him a lot but some of his swings look like what you see from slap hitting softball players.

Sorry to do this, but I get images in my head of comparable players. Would you say that Juan Pierre could be a level that Jimenez reaches if most everything breaks right? For some reason I hear Gilberto Jimenez and I think potential Juan Pierre. Or am I all wet with that comparison?

I suck at comparisons, but in my head maybe something like the Tampa version of Julio Lugo that plays an above average CF? 40 doubles, 30 steals, 5-10 HR, .290 BA with tons of balls in play and a handful of walks?

Jimenez is so raw that it'd hard to come up with a comp. Their listed sizes are similar, but they aren't shaped the same - Pierre was more like a champion middleweight boxer, wiry even without being all that tall, whereas Jimenez looks more like a soccer player. I also wouldn't be surprised if Jimenez was closer to about 175, though I'm terrible at judging that stuff. Pierre hit 18 homers in his whole career, and I feel like there's a path for Jimenez where he's a 15 homer per year guy, even if it takes him a long time to get there. I guess the thing I've seen with Jimenez is that he doesn't yet consistently drive the ball, but it seems that the tools are there for him to do so. That, along with his hand-eye coordination and speed, could make for a very dangerous player. But he's so, so far from that still.

Do you happen to know where Duran ranks on those lists? They're not replicas of each other, but some similarities in their profiles....

Gilberto seems like such a raw talent, I’m really not sure where his developmental path goes. I keep hearing about his bat control, and that’s what has me excited for his development. There’s so much discussion about his flaws as a hitter, and all are valid points. But to me, it all just points to areas where he can improve, possibly tremendously. His K rate is solid, even pretty good. But with the walk rate as low as it is, it seems like there’s plenty of room for him to cull a bunch of pitches he’s swinging at. With his bat-to-ball skills, he’s got an escape route if he’s getting deeper in counts. So a little selective aggression would actually probably be ideal for him as an approach. Seek pitches to drive. The GB rate is sky-high and he’s almost certainly a swing-change candidate (a la Tzu Wei Lin), who would benefit a ton from more LD. He absolutely isn’t someone you want focusing on FB, but a little elevation wouldn’t hurt. He’s just so inexperienced that there’s tons of room to grow. And he *just* turned 19, so he’ll be slightly age-advanced starting in Greenville next spring. That also suggests to me that he’s got plenty of time/room to add strength. Incorporating his lower body, natural growth, and a LD-geared hard contact swing are all well within reasonable reach. As James said, he has SO far to go, but when you look at how far he’s come already in such a short time, it’s super encouraging. That his favorite player is Mookie Betts seems...fitting. Jimenez strikes me as someone whose natural athleticism, when combined with (possibly rapid) skill acquisition, might well exceed early impressions. I really liked soxscout’s early-career Lugo comp. I think walks will come with (extensive) refining of approach; a .280-.300/.330-.360/.420-.450 line might be “optimistic,” but I think it’s in there. He’s gonna be a LOT of fun to follow the next 4-5 years.

What's his Bill James SPD rating? In the Margot range? The Moncada range? Doubtful, feel like according to whatever math that was, Jame had Moncada as like Marvel Comics skill base runner.

You laugh, but what if they can't trade Mookie and he walks, they do the inconceivable and package Benny with Price to cut payroll, and JBJ walks as well? I'd invite him to spring training

He would have to have one incredible season to get an invite. Like as in he destroys low A, high A and AA to the tune of 400, 450, 550 with 40 sb. LOL, I mean really.
