He's been so good he needs his own thread (& a promotion both on this sites rankings & to Salem)

Some footage from Shugart's last start courtesy of RSS. Curveball looking nice and can less confidently say he has a lower release point to help with riding fastballs up in the zone. I'm interested to hear what others think though.

He was in Greenville in 2019, no movement in two years? Not impressed.
/s
Edit - dumb joke, my b. I'm aware of the reasons he's in Greenville.

Daniel Victor @slydanno70 Watched a kid named Chase Shugart pitch for the High-A Red Sox last night. He’s short for a starter 5’10” he’s old for the level, but he has some legit stuff. FB touched 97 and he has big time confidence in his plus curveball. Threw it first pitch several times.
Daniel Victor @slydanno70 · 2h Replying to @slydanno70
Likely a reliever long term if he makes it, but he wasn’t a throw away prospect.

I wonder if his rule 5 status plays a role in keeping him as a starter through the year. Seems like a guy who the Red Sox would have moved to the bullpen by now, but if he takes off in that role that he could be grabbed in the rule 5 draft (bullpen arms seem to be the easiest to draft/use). Chances are they are simply following the plan with him and there are going to be so many rule-5 guys available this year (because of the missed development year) that he wouldn't be considered. But I'm curious how often this happens (keeping a SP in that role longer than needed to reduce the chance of being drafted).

Shugart doesn't strike me as a guy they'd have moved by now. He's been fine as a starter so far. Compare with Scherff who was struggling as a starter so it was clearly time to move him.
Shugart has 4 pitches, so starting gives him the reps to work on all of them, even if he's almost certainly a RP in the end.

He's to low in the rankings & he'll be protected from the rule 5 draft.

I get that he’s got good reports but at the end of the day he’s a 24 year old with a couple suspensions under his belt and a 5.00 ERA in A+ ball. He doesn’t need to be protected, if he gets picked he’s not sticking in the show
That’s not to say he isn’t a guy to watch. You’re just not gonna go from being extremely hittable in A+ ball to usable in a major league bullpen over the span of 6 months. At least I highly doubt it.

If a 2022 bottom-feeder sees a decent ceiling for him 2-3 years down the road, he could be a R5 draft risk.
By the same token, there are probably lots of R5-eligible prospects around the league who are more attractive than him and there's a finite number of spots for R5 guys on 26-man rosters around the league, so not a slam dunk.
