End to this game has been more anxious than it should be...

This pen seems immune to lack of pressure.

Yandy Diaz has kinda owned Price and Sale (in a SSS). that foul ball might keep him out for a few days.

Tampa's bullpen is pretty worn down right now, the Tampa broadcast has been saying all game. Part of this problem is because they use a opener a lot and often. Jerry is right about this one. Now they used a position player to pitch because they're out of options.... They had plenty of options including the pitcher who was warming up (Castillo)

They had plenty of options including the pitcher who was warming up (Castillo) That was probably in case the position player threw too many pitches. Still, in a game where you just got back 3 runs in the 8th, you throw a position player in there like that says a lot. This is a important game for Tampa too, right with Boston.

I mean, I disagree on Snell, but either way it doesn't matter. You said the opener is doomed because you need great starters to win the World Series... ok, so a team has three stud starters and the other two days they go with an opener and a volume guy. What's so doomed about that? Why is this strategy that gets good results out of mediocre pitching "doomed"? Putting aside the stud pitchers, which I think we can agree on. How is it you can tell that this strategy is getting good results out of mediocre pitching. Why wouldn't taking the time (lumps) to see if you can develop the other 2 spots to be be even league average worth it ? I mean this an organizational decision. It may be that they (or others) feel it is correct, but it goes against years of evidence to the contrary. Perhaps that is a function of the changing game, but until it is proven successful, I will remain skeptical and convinced that there will be negative unintended consequences on this type of decision. I mean Jalen Beeks came into tonight's game with a 5-0 record and sub-3.00 ERA. You're equating "the opener strategy doesn't work" with "the Rays don't have enough talent to win" which are two entirely separate things. If the Rays win like 92 games with an 84-win roster because of their strategy, but can't win the World Series because no strategy in the world can overcome the gap in talent, that certainly doesn't reflect poorly on the strategy.

Great win, but Eovaldi's performance is troubling.
What if he isn't the answer in the bullpen?

Great win, but Eovaldi's performance is troubling. What if he isn't the answer in the bullpen? This is probably why the Sox are scouting Ken Giles and Kirby Yates. Who can trust Eovaldi right now after one set back and a limited rehab stint? Might be a lost year for him.

great start. eduardo's been carrying the innings load for this rotation lately; imagine that Yeah, he's on one of those stretches where you dream on him being that top of the rotation starter the last month or so. Hopefully he can keep it up and stay healthy.

I am very willing to give Eovaldi a pass on this one - first game back after a LONG stay on the injured list. Stuff looked pretty good at times. Great win! Let's get another tomorrow. Some beautiful things about this game Devers big hit Xander rolling on and not skipping a beat JDM's bat wakes up Benny's bat wakes up Travis being useful Hernandez breaking the curse of Nunez And ERod of course!

This is all true!
Rays are going thru a tough stretch and we have a rejuvenated Sale (we hope) and an impending bounce back from Price on tap. Euphoria beckons.
Then again experience this year teaches me not to get too high as it is invariably followed by a too low. I am back to just enjoying watching the players and not as concerned about Ws and Ls. Yin Yanging is painful.

With Sale going this is a must win. A win here puts them in position to sweep. A win here allows us to say "well at least we got 2 of 3, winning these series are what's important" if we happen to lose game three. A win tonight gets the momentum rolling, with Price going to the mound with a chip on his shoulder. A win tonight makes all the people on the site who say "this team simply isn't very good, trade Mookie and JDM" stay quiet for awhile. A win tonight makes all these giddy feelings we have right now seem like a contact high compared to that dank shit, that snoop dog smokes.
So let's win it tonight!!!

Marco Hernandez is looking more and more like an every day 2B. Great defense, great at-bats and very fast. The only issue is 0 walks.

In E-Rod's first great stretch of 10 starts, he allowed a .280 xwOBA, plus or minus .085.
In this stretch of 5, he's .260 +/- .038. Not just better but more consistent.
But, wait, there's more. His karma on balls in play went from +.018 (meaning his wOBA was that much higher) to -.019. That's may be all luck (21% chance the improvement happens at random), but some of it might be real.
He's putting some heat on Price for a game 2 start, if they get that far.
Meanwhile, Cashner's second start had a .299 xwOBA but .414 wOBA. Both the Mancini HRs were sometimes 2Bs or outs depending on the park, and the Davis 2B in the gap is an out about 40% of the time.
He doesn't have to pitch better than that to be a big upgrade, since the luck will even out.

Also of note, Cashner made it 6 innings in his last start which really helps out the bullpen.

I would have sent Travis down. Agree sending Travis down would've been the more obvious move. Makes me wonder if they're worried that fatigue might be an issue for Hernandez and are going to pace him a little bit.

Very disappointed with Marco being sent down. Mitch went 0 for Pawtucket...risk of being lineup black hole.
