Some quick notes from tonights game between the PawSox and Durham Bulls: Teddy Stankiewicz - Sat 90-92. Lots of weak contact. Only one laser given up on the Jason Coats HR Chad De La Guerra - made a nice play in foul territory by the bullpen. Running and twisting to catch the ball Josh Ockimey - really struggled with Sam McWilliams. Struck out badly in the first AB (not even close). 4 K’s and looked really rough Mike Shawaryn - Sat 89-91 on the fastball. Got some swing and misses but struggled with control out of the gate Cole Sturgeon - HBP in 8th inning on left hand but stayed in game. Looked like it really hurt but he hung in there Rusney Castillo - Five hits but nothing too hard. Didn’t lift much in the air and his two doubles were past the third baseman down the line (hard hit but not elevated) Bobby Poyner - Mostly 88-89 fastball topped out at 90 once. 80-81 off speed (changeup?). Gave up a massive foul ball to Brendan McKay before promptly giving up a 425 ft blast to him right after. Trevor Kelley - Sat mostly between 86-88. Struck out IL’s second highest in batting Kean Wong rather convincingly God, I've been so lazy this year, but there's not much I really want to see in AAA to go. These July games in Durham are usually so hot that I leave by the 4th inning before I die. You're lucky that the game was played and that it's about 30 degrees cooler than yesterday. I actually work for the Bulls believe it or not! Born and raised a Sox fan (who desperately would love to work for a Sox affiliate), but in the interim I can watch and absorb the PawSox first trip to Durham!

I would be surprised if Dalbec is with Portland in two weeks. If he's still in the organization through the deadline (and my feeling is that he will) then he's a pretty obvious 8/1 promotion candidate. Shugart, Granberg, and Chatham as well. Maybe Joan Martinez. I could also see Casas and Decker getting tastes at the next level before the end of the season. How highly do you regard Decker?

Wilson since his remotion, .308/.429/.654.
Lotsa shade on the theory that players struggle on going to AA solely because of the difference in levels.

I don’t think there’s ever a sole reason a player struggles (I believe it’s typically a few things compounded), but that jump remains the hardest one to make in the minors

Probably somewhere around the consensus, meaning that I like him. He's been playing very well in July and given that it wasn't an aggressive placement I'd like to see him get a taste of the SAL heading into the offseason. I'm mildly concerned he could end up a tweener - he's already moved off of center field, and his arm is fine but not the type you traditionally want in right field in Fenway. He's a good athlete though, and the arm strength could potentially play up with coaching--Margot and Betts are both guys whose arm strength improved notably. I know we've talked about this a lot with Casas, about how he doesn't really look like a third baseman (and hasn't played there much), but he has a good chance to hit well enough to play first base AND be actually a good defender at the position, rather than just a guy who is there because you need to get the bat onto the field. And I guess that's sort of the same with Decker. He might be a left fielder, but he'd probably be a very good left fielder. And his Lowell line (.259/.344/.531) is probably a good idea of what he'd be if all goes well, and that will obviously play in left. But that's no guarantee on the bat, he gets pull heavy and it'll be interesting to see if more advanced pitchers can exploit that.
