Lugo 2-3 with RBI and BB Continues his hot start Danny Diaz seems to have trouble making contact, can’t tap into his power potential I don't know that I'd say he's had a hot start so much as he started very slow and has gotten hot over the last 15 days or so. He was at .211/.286/.316 entering play on 7/15, and after today is at .299/365/.429. Was thinking the same. I just read it as a hot start to his career. He’s getting his OPS up near .800, and I’m even happier about that pick than I was when they made it (and I was pretty ecstatic then). Seems like a good shot to stick at SS even if he’s pretty raw, and I’ve loved that he seems to be making adjustments. Seems like a “50s across the board” kind of guy with a little projection (specifically, gotta dream a bit on the power), and he might have a plus hit tool eventually. There’s a lot to like about a gamer/dirt-dog type who gets the most out of average tools, and has no particular weakness. Even if he’s a lot of 50s/55s and 45 game power, that’s a valuable player at a premium position.

Damm...Mata struggling right now. What happened? Any drop in his velocity since the 3rd?

Mata’s done after 5. Being replaced by Matthew Gorst. Mata started to struggle with his control in the fourth inning. Just couldn’t get the ball where he wanted it. Thankfully his stuff was good enough to help him escape relatively unscathed. Takeaways: his stuff is filthy. This is the third time I’ve seen him (once last year, twice this year). His fastball, cutter, and curve all look really good. Don’t know enough to say plus or what but very good. He really focused on the curveball over the slider this game (last time I saw him was slider over curve). He was able to throw his curve for a strike consistently and in any count. Got it to drop in for a called strike and got some swinging strikes.
Fastball velocity was 95-97, cutter was 89-93 (I only saw 93 once, could have been a fastball that he took a lot off of. Cutter definitely got up to 92 at least). Curveball was 79-82.

Nice to see Mata finish well. Not a great start, and some inefficiency, but still pretty solid. Good to see him holding his own in AA at just 20. Holding his velo in particular is really good to see. And it’s defi encouraging to hear that the CB is flashing plus or better.

Not sure why but Matheny is out and Jeremy Rivera is playing right field. I call BS on his listed height of 5-11. Dude looks 5-6 to 5-7. He’s tiny.
Matheny lined out hard to the first basemen right before he was pulled.

Final thoughts before I make the drive home.
Dedgar gained a tick in the bullpen. Sits consistently at 91-92.
Duran made a lot of loud contact. Also showed a good arm out in center fielders. Made a strong, accurate throw to home to hold a runner at third and almost had a guy at second on a double to the wall.
Great game by Dalbec. Two hits to the opposite field (plus one more) and played excellent defense.
I like John Nunez behind the plate. Made a perfect throw to catch a runner and had a couple really good blocks, including one almost two feet to his right. Still inconsistent receiving though.

First time I’ve heard Duran had an arm. How is High are you on Dalbec?

Zeferjahn must still be struggling with the hangnail, walked 3 in 2/3 of an inning and Song didn't start game 2

Very cool and helpful. Happy to hear that Duran is coming alive again, and that his arm is probably at least average out in CF. Good stuff.
